About the Author

Judith Goodenough

Judith received her B.S. in biology from Wagner College (Staten Island, NY) and her doctorate in biology from New York University. She has more than 35 years of teaching experience at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, until recently specializing in introductory level courses. In 2009, she was selected as a College of Natural Sciences Fellow for Blended Learning and developed a hybrid course in introductory physiology. The insights into student concerns and problems—gained from more than 30 years of teaching Human Biology and 20 years of team-teaching the Biology of Social Issues—have helped shape this book. In 1986, Judith was honored with a Distinguished Teaching Award from UMass. In addition to teaching, she has written articles in peer-reviewed journals, contributed chapters to several introductory biology texts, and written numerous laboratory manuals. With the author team of McGuire and Jakob, she wrote Perspectives on Animal Behavior, Third Edition.

Betty McGuire

Betty received her B.S. in biology from Pennsylvania State University, where she also played varsity basketball. She went on to receive an M.S. and Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and then spent 2 happy years as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. Her field and laboratory research emphasize the social behavior and reproduction of small mammals. She has published more than 50 research papers, coauthored the text Perspectives on Animal Behavior as well as several introductory biology study guides and instructor manuals, and served as an associate editor for Mammalian Species, a publication of the American Society of Mammalogists. Betty taught Human Biology, Introductory Biology, Vertebrate Biology, and Animal Behavior at Smith College. She now teaches Mammalogy and Vertebrates: Structure, Function, and Evolution at Cornell University.

College Students Don't Waste Money

Just buy the 4th edition and you can get the 4th edition cheap used. This is yet another way in which publishers are trying to suck money out of broke college students, by creating a new edition every year. There is no difference in this edition and the past 2 editions, all they did was change the pictures.

well written text with excellent real life connections

I rarely review works, but am writing here because I teach using this text and disagree about the bias mentioned by another reviewer (but I would be interested to hear and consider any specific claims of bias). I find this text to be much more readable than many other Human Biology Textbooks on the market and especially like the Special Topics which connect the basic background with applied topics. This textbook also has very good end of chapter questions as a resource for students. For these reasons I have chosen to teach using this text.

I agree about the textbook companies trying to milk us - the price on this book is ridiculous and they try to charge more with all the bundling of extras. Many of my students rent, and unfortunately it is problematic from a teaching standpoint to have students using different editions. Also the publishers force campus bookstores to only order the newest edition so professors can't even ask everyone to use the old edition. I do think that this textbook has gone to a 3 year cycle.

THE Best Book on Adobe Fireworks... EVER!

Everything we know about Fireworks (Fw), which is worth knowing, was taught to us by Jim Babbage. We are among those who carefully comb over the latest editions of Classroom in a Book (CIB), looking for what's new as something of a checklist of what is to be mastered. Jim's efforts with Fw CS6 CIB gets our award for the best revised and improved edition of a previous CIB. Not only are there changes to all the chapters but Jim primarily provides all new visual examples for the pages and lessons.

For starts, Fireworks has to be the most misunderstood app in the Master Collection. With a cursory glance, Fw causes many to either say, "I can do this in Photoshop (Ps)." or "I can do this in Illustrator (Ai)." However, that's not what Fw is all about. It's a web designer's toolbox. And, yes, that requires the manipulation of pixel or vector based art.

In its earlier life, under the Macromedia nameplate, Fw was supposed to permit you to create web graphics without the need for Ps and Ai. Today, we know that people think of Ai and Ps as design solutions. So, why do you need Fireworks if you can do that with the other two long-time Adobe apps? Just breeze through this CIB and if you are up to speed on Ps and Ai. it will be more than obvious that Fw is chuck full of features which Ps and Ai cannot touch.

Chapter one assumes that you know nothing about other Adobe CS6 apps and you have not worked in Fw before. It gets you up to speed with the tools and panels. If you're new to Fw, don't blow through this chapter thinking that you already know everything. There are some goodies hidden in it which are specific to Fw.

Again, the second chapter may cause users of other CS6 apps to think, "I know about layers, and pages, so I can skip this one." And, that would be a partial truth, however, if you skip the materials on states you will be confused by what else is presented in the chapters which follow.

If you're doing these lessons with the idea of mastering Fw, no mater how much you know about Photoshop, don't let the third chapter's title about bitmap images fool you into thinking that you can skip this, too. You can't. It's very specific to Fw. If you want to own the power of Fw, work through every lesson and read every paragraph. The same is true of the fifth chapter, which we found to be quite impressive. It has more than step-by-step approaches to the technology of Fw. This provides some great direction for smart, efficient workflow and achieving accurate results.

When it comes to vector art, if you have not mastered it in Ai, you can't expect this book to take you through all of it in one chapter. Nevertheless, it provides you with all the basics. The lessons have well executed examples for you to work with and at this point in the book you can begin to feel visually inspired by the work you do, a long-standing hallmark of the best CIBs.

Masking is a little tricky and many a creative professional would prefer a root canal to mastering it. In all candor we are not fans how Fw handles some of this. We get better results in Ps. However, carefully follow these lessons of the sixth chapter and do not allow yourself to use it as an excuse to not learn what you may have been avoiding. It's quite easy in Fw.

If you're used to how text works in InDesign (ID) or Ai, you may feel a bit outside of familiar territory with Fw. Things work just a bit different, there. The seventh chapter makes no assumptions about your knowledge of typography terms, but it's also not a boring more-of-the-same set of lessons. By the fifth page you are making creative application of type. This CIB uses your time efficiently.

At less than the halfway point of the book, the eighth chapter moves you into aspects of Fw which are unique to the rest of the Master Collection's apps. These may be the parts you've been waiting to dive into. The chapter is all about styles and the styles panel. The "styles" name may seem misleading to you if you have ID's paragraph styles in the back of your mind or the cascading style sheets (CSS) of Dreamweaver (Dw). However, the concepts are very similar. The difference is that you are applying Fw styles to objects rather than text. The lessons take you through what could be utilized for making three dimensional buttons.

Again, the ninth chapter's title of "symbols" might have you thinking that it's talking about type ornaments. That's not 100% far off the mark. Think of a type ornament as a graphic symbol and you're starting to understand what Fw has to offer. In short, you'll learn how to create graphics for a library of symbols which you can quickly apply to web pages. An excellent example of this would be buttons, which are unique to a website, which must appear again and again on page after page. The lessons even include animated symbols. It's a very empowering chapter in which you can begin to see your learning efforts producing finished pages. At this point, you should feel as if you get what Fw is all about.

The ten chapter on optimizing for the web is extensive. It's the point where the reader goes from working with cool visuals to needing to understand some of the mechanics of the web. For some, this might be a little mind boggling, if you've never walked those streets before. Fortunately, you're not walking them alone, after midnight. Work with these pages slowly and take a break if needed. Please remember that it's not about completing the lessons. You want to complete this chapter absorbing every morsel of it. If necessary, take breaks. It's a well-planned learning experience.

The biggest and most powerful feature of Fw, for us, is prototyping. In summary, Fw allows you to create a website and/or mobile device app and demonstrate the whole blooming thing to a client. The eleventh chapter is both instructive and downright clever in the lessons. You'll hopefully work through with a feeling of great accomplishment. Once you finish applauding your work, gear up for a far move challenging, but doable, industrial-strength lesson in prototyping for chapter twelve.

The final chapter, in the book, very responsibly guides you through how Fw interacts with other apps for an excellent examination of your working as smartly and efficiently as possible. This avoids your being lulled into the belief that you can do all things in Fw.

Just because chapter 13's last page takes you to the index it does not mean that you are finished. There's a fourteenth chapter on the DVD as a bonus. A cool new set of features were added to Dw CS6 for mobile devices. If you've been working with Fw for a few cycles, you'll appreciate this one.

In conclusion, this is THE best book on Fireworks ever done. It's a must have. We are pleased to give it a solid stars.

Good guide through fireworks. Each lesson is easy and step by step. The book explains the value of Fireworks (say vs photoshop) I love books on Kindle. The only problem I've found is the book does not cover animation.

Best Reference Book on Photoshop I have ever read!

This book is a must for photographers who like to spend time taking images rather that spend long hours on photoshop and image making less! The chapters are easy to refer to and the DVD will reinforce what you read or in my case perused! I got the book when it was released and perused only those chapters I was sketchy on and use it as a reference when I have a question.

The best thing about this book are the extras - DVD, Podcast, projects... ect

This is a fine book, in and of itself. I am a visual learner but also kinesthetic - meaning I like to see examples, but learn best by doing. And that is where this book and accompanying podcast really shine. The book and CD have many visual examples as well as technical info to back up the explanation but the Understanding Photoshop podcast is what really sold me on this system. In the podcast, the author explains and demonstrates the techniques illustrated in the book. This more than anything has helped me to really understand Photoshop. I can follow the example and mimic them with the examples included in the CD.

Finally there are a few quizzes on the accompanying CD that you can use to gauge your understanding of the chapters you have just read. The one thing I wish the quizzes had was the corrected answer though.

Great for students and book enthusiasts.

I'm a visual person. I see things and learn primarily through watching and reading. After taking up Photoshop Fundamentals to complete my core requirements, I quickly noticed how simple it was to follow the instructions it was feeding me. I have found countless books that cover so much information on a single page, It's almost impossible to keep up with. HOWEVER, with the CD that came with the book, I haven't had any issues learning photo manipulation. As always, there are Pro's and Con's to most everything.

Pro's: EXTREMELY useful for simplifying techniques used in photo manipulation. Extra content to further give visual aid to those that don't understand tool placement, yet. Paced instructions that keep the reader informed at a pace they can understand without feeling overwhelmed. Large text to follow while using the program.

Con's: Could have more material. I've covered the basics of photo manipulation in my class, and I feel comfortable using the program now without duress. I would suggest this book only for brushing up on your skills and learning from a beginner's standpoint.

Overall: I highly recommend the book. The book gives you exactly what you pay for. Although, I would suggest buying another book to deeper explain complex layering, colors and effects.

About the Author
With training in mathematics, statistics, and economics, Mike Sullivan, III has a varied teaching background that includes 15 years of instruction in both high school and college-level mathematics. He is currently a full-time professor of mathematics and statistics at Joliet Junior College. Mike has numerous textbooks in publication in addition to his Introductory Statistics Series, which include a Developmental Math series, and a Precalculus series, which he writes with his father, Michael Sullivan. Mike has built this book in the classroom using feedback from his students. He is well aware of the challenges of students taking an introductory statistics course. His goal is for students to be more informed interpreters of data, so that they will be better decision makers and have stronger critical-thinking skills. MyStatLab access included, not MathLabsPlus which is what I needed

The book was correct, but the access code did not work for MLP (MathLabsPlus) which is required for my online class through the Columbia College of Missouri. I had to shell out the additional funds at Pearson for MLP. Make sure your class is using MyStatLab, not a different access version. Thay are all through Pearson, just have different names.
The My Stat Lab access is clearly indicated in description, this was my error. I am including this info in my review so nobody else makes this mistake.
If you only need the etext book, not a paperback that you can hold, you can go to pearsons website and buy the lab access that comes with access to the ebook ONLINE only. It can not be downloaded, but you can print some things.

The best math book I have used

I bought this text so I could help my wife with a Statistics course that uses this book. I have gone through about half the book and am really enjoying it. There are very few mistakes and the author uses many real examples of statistical studies to illustrate points. Math has been my hobby for quite some time and I've used many different text books. I would rank this book among the top of all the books in all the areas of math that I have studied.

It's great that I could rent this one so cheap (less than 1/4 what they want at the bookstore!) Mr. Sullivan also does a good job of making the subject easy to comprehend. The book arrived in a timely fashion, and in very good shape. Thank you! :-)

About the Author

Randy Knight has taught introductory physics for nearly 30 years at Ohio State University and California Polytechnic University, where he is currently Professor of Physics and Director of the Minor in Environmental Studies. Randy received a Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley, and was a post-doctoral fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics before joining the faculty at Ohio State University. It was at Ohio State, under the mentorship of Professor Leonard Jossem, that he began to learn about the research in physics education that, many years later, led to Five Easy Lessons: Strategies for Successful Physics Teachingand this book. Randy’s research interests are in the field of lasers and spectroscopy. When he’s not in the classroom or in front of a computer, you can find Randy hiking, sea kayaking, playing the piano, or spending time with his wife Sally and their seven cats.

Awsome book for scientists and engineers!

First off let me start with saying that I am going to compare this to a Serway's style of books. Both are good but just different in their approach. The strengths of Knight's book is that it approaches physics in a conceptual approach with heavy analysis of problem and then focuses on problem solving strategies. I like understanding the concept before just bashing away at problem solving. Knight's book gives you just enough details to understand the problem as a physicist with out flooding you with too many details. In short this book teaches you how to be a scientist. It has a very smooth transition to new and more complex subject that are related to the previous ideas presented. I learned from Serway's book in college for my calculus base physics and I found that one to be mechanistic and heavy handed on problems and very equation heavy with out demonstrating the concept a good as in Knight's book. Serway's is a good encyclopedic reference but I think that Knight's shows the art of thinking like a scientist.

This is the - best- textbook, I have ever read. I hated physics in high school, and now in college, I am a physics major. This book turned me around, this book got me through 1st year. Everything is taught to you from the ground up. Everything is clear and concise, there are plenty of worked through examples. However, you dont learn physics by reading, as a consequence there is a comprehensive list of exercises at the end of each chapter. These include both concept questions (which really test your knowledge), simple applications of chapter content, and progressively harder problems. All these problems have full worked out solutions via the solution Manuel.

this book will make you appreciate and understand physics like no teacher, no professor can. If you are serious about physics, then this book is a must.

Inconsistent

I'd say this is a great textbook if you have an easy professor that only asks questions like "A 1m long solenoid with 25 turns carries a current of 3A. What is the magnetic field?". However, if you have a professor that challenges you and asks difficult questions on your problem sets, tests, etc., you may find it lacking. Some areas are explained quite well (I'd say this applies earlier on with the "easier" topics) and others barely at all (most of the later, more complex topics). It got to the point where I wrote in my notes things like, "Ask professor wtf this means".
The book has lots of nice pictures, but if you actually want both a qualitative and quantitative understanding, there are far better resources. Obviously, most looking at this book have to buy it because it's assigned by their professor, but if you're just searching for a good reference on the subject, go with Halliday & Resnick instead.

About the Author
Sandee Cohen has taught for numerous private computer graphics schools as well as New York University, Parson’s School of Design, New School University, University of Hawaii, and Cooper Union, as well as at many publishing houses and design studios all over the United States. She is the senior contributing editor to InDesign Magazine. She has also contributed to InDesign Secrets and CreativePro.com. In addition to the basics of InDesign, she teaches classes on creating interactive documents and ePubs from InDesign.

Diane Burns founded TransPacific Digital, Inc. (formerly TechArt), which provides print, web, and interactive design services. She is an Adobe® Certified Training Instructor and Adobe® Certified Expert in InDesign, the author of several books and articles on publishing, and a regular speaker at InDesign conferences. She teaches InDesign courses in San Francisco and for many major publishing companies. She has worked extensively with pre-release versions of Adobe products, most recently InDesign and the Digital Publishing Suite.

beyond the scope of this book

The short and simple review: read, memorize, and copy pages 224-225, then put the book back on the shelf.
Since I subscribed to Adobe's Creative Suite in the summer of 2012 I've been determined to learn more about digital publishing and interactive books. In February 2013 I was looking at what was on the market. I found this book and Pariah Burke's ePublishing with InDesign CS6. The Cohen and Burns book seemed to have little in it beyond screen shots of various InDesign menus. In other words, it looked as though it would do little more than walk you through InDesign. Whereas Burke's book seemed to dig deeply into the nature of digital publishing. I put this one back on the shelf and purchased Burke.
I found that Burke was what I had expected in regard to defining the formats and walking you fairly deeply into the process (going into detail with Adobe's DPS, for instance) but was otherwise overly optimistic about the current state of digital publishing (just because it can be done doesn't mean anyone's actually supporting it). So I began to browse the selection at Amazon. Judging by the table of contents Cohen and Burns' book looked as though it covered some of what Burke missed. Unfortunately, once I had the book in hand and started reading it, I found that it was as shallow as I had anticipated. Most of what I thought might be covered turned out, repeatedly, to be "beyond the scope of this book".
I'm giving this book an extra star for those two pages of very valuable insight as to the current state of the world of digital publishing, in which they go into detail as to what isn't actually supported (for instance, even though most tablets read PDF files they do not recognize the interactive features such as sound and buttons...or the fact that EPUB 3.0 allows multi-media but very few online sellers distribute it). Photocopy those two pages (224-225), then buy Burke.

Excellent Book!

I've bought and read several books on formatting for digital publishing and this one is awesome. I am not a professional graphic designer, I'm a self publisher with 3 books so far and I wanted to convert the print versions of my books to ePub. My books are "how to" books with one or more images per page. I needed to learn how to format all those images for optimum viewing and export to ePub and this book got me there in a very short amount of time. Well written, understandable by a person with basic knowledge of InDesign, this book will have you converting your files and happily uploading them for sale with retailers.

If you have used other versions of InDesign and are not familiar with the new capabilities of CS6, this book clearly explains the differences, which was a big deal for me. I was using CS5 before upgrading to CS6 recently and I had *no idea* just how much InDesign had improved for dealing with going from print to ePub.

Excellent book for beginners in ePublishing

Co-authors Sandee Cohen and Diane Burns have strong backgrounds in design and publishing, and that knowledge is woven into this book on eBooks.
Each topic begins with a concise but complete overview of the topic before giving thorough details about individual features and tasks. The book provides a very good entry for those who are new to digital publishing or are migrating from traditional print and/or web design.
I've used Sandee Cohen's other books in many of my computer classes and my students love them, keeping them for handy reference when they return to their workplace.
If you're new to ePublications and want a non-intimidating guide, this is the book to get.

About the Author

Larry Goldstein has received several distinguished teaching awards, given more than fifty Conference and Colloquium talks & addresses, and written more than fifty books in math and computer programming. He received his PhD at Princeton and his BA and MA at the University of Pennsylvania. He also teaches part time at Drexel University.

David Schneider, who is known widely for his tutorial software, holds a BA degree from Oberlin College and a PhD from MIT. He is currently an associate professor of mathematics at the University of Maryland. He has authored eight widely used math texts, fourteen highly acclaimed computer books, and three widely used mathematics software packages. He has also produced instructional videotapes at both the University of Maryland and the BBC.

Martha Siegel holds a BA from Russell Sage College, attended Rensselear Polytechnic Institute as a special student, and received his PhD at the University of Rochester. From 1966 until 1971 she taught at Goucher University in Baltimore. Since 1971 she has been a professor at Towson State University, also in Maryland. Professor Siegel has been on the writing team of this book since the fifth edition and is also the co-author of a precalculus reform book.

Good Text for Basic Calculus Concepts

Contrary to what some other reviewer have claimed, I found this book quite helpful. It provides the basic concepts of Calculus such as limits and derivative rules and applications, exponents and logarithms, integrals, double variable calculus, trig functions, techniques of integrations, an introduction to differential equations, and even series.
I found this book very easy to use. It presents the information in a very terse, straightforward manner. Basically, it cuts down on the mathematical theory and allows students to solve the important equations quick and easy. Instead of being lost in complicated definations of derivations, I was able to quickly find derivations and discover their uses in functions.
This is the book that I used for my "Calculus for Social and Natural Science Majors" course. Personally, I feel that I learned much from this book. I never took a Calculus class in high school and wasn't the most mathematically inclinded so i was sure that Calculus was going to be tough. This book made it really easy to understand and somehow Calculus turned into one of my easiest classes.
This book, however, is not for those who plan on taking higher level Calculus classes. It has most of the fundamentals, but not more advanced topics. Also, several topics are presented out of order from a regular Calc 1 class (so I'm told). For instance, calculus of several varibles--a topic usually covered in a third level course--occurs before techniques of intregration.
The book is quite suitable for a Business/Natural Science Calc class, as it was intended to be used for, and overall seems to make the subject easier. It provides a good means of jumping right into the subject.

Just awful

I was assigned this book to teach Calculus to business majors. To call it horrid would be an understatement. Important concepts are only briefly touched upon in examples (such as function composition) and takes unacceptable liberties (saying things like "it is sufficient to think of e as 2.7"). Too much time is spent on trivialities and busywork, rather than examples that would nail the concept down to the student. The book introduces the concept of the derivative before the limit - that's like learning to ride a bike before you know how to walk!

I've never seen a Calc book worse than this. If I had my druthers, I'd use Stewart for my class. It's not perfect, but at least my students would understand how the limit relates to the derivative, rather than have it introduced and immediately dimissed.

Make sure whether you need access to the mathlab online section or not before purchase.

I purchased this version instead of the hardcover cause I thought it was just a cheaper paperback version of the same book.

I was wrong.

This is the international version of the book. Looking at the page again the only way I can tell this is the (PNIE) in the title, didn't know what that meant at first, and if you zoom in on the image you can see the words in that orange space on the cover. But if you don't know what PNIE means and don't zoom in you'll have no way to know this is the international version.

It still covers all the same stuff. Calculus in the USA is the same as Calculus elsewhere in the world. So if you need this for a classroom class you'll more than likely be fine.

But if you're taking an online class and the homework is through the book publisher's online mathlab course you're not going to get the necessary authentication code to be able to log in and do the homework (unless you buy the code at the price of a new text book as well, basically doubling the cost.) Depending on what you need the book for this will either be fine for your needs or inadequate.

So read your syllabus first to see if you need the online component or not.
