About the Author
Professor of English at Central Washington University, Loretta Gray has three degrees related to her interest in composition and applied linguistics: Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language (School for International Training), Master of Arts in Spanish (Middlebury College), and Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Linguistics (Boston University). She has experience teaching English to non-native speakers in Mexico, Spain, and the United States. In addition, she taught Spanish at Clemson University and applied linguistics at the School for International Training. Dr. Gray has been teaching composition and applied linguistics courses at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington, since 1992. She also is co-author of the textbook RHETORICAL GRAMMAR.

Fascinating exploration of how to achieve various rhetorical effects by making different grammatical choices

For many people, grammar is a dry, boring subject with pedantic rules and arcane terms that seem far removed from everyday language. In this textbook and reference guide, the authors demonstrate how the thoughtful and creative use of grammar can help a writer to achieve a variety of interesting, memorable, provocative and persuasive effects. In thirteen chapters, the authors discuss various ways of using grammatical choices to construct, modify, and improve sentences and phrases, and make thoughtful word choices that can help a writer to communicate more effectively.

The Preface indicates the book is intended for students in composition classes, but beginning writers and writers unfamiliar with modern or classical rhetoric could find this book challenging and somewhat difficult to follow. Although the book is written for students in composition classes, a non-student interested in learning different ways to develop and improve his or her writing could find it a useful reference guide.

Readers interested in this book should also consider taking a look at Jeanne Fahnestock, Rhetorical Style: The Uses of Language in Persuasion and Sister Miriam Joseph, Shakespeare's Use of the Arts of Language.

Riddled with Errors

This book is riddled with errors. Towards the end, in the style chapter, my class found an entire concept where every example was completely contradictory to the definition. The style of the book makes it very readable, but these errors are shameful because they are not merely typos (though there are some of those) but mistakes that interfere with basic understanding of the concepts it is trying to teach.

Not Bad; Not Great.

This was a required text for a class called "The English Language". To be fair, we did not read the entire book -- only about half of the chapters.

The writing is clear and easy to understand, but it is dry and dull to read. The goal of the book is to help you make better use of the language. I suspect if you can stay awake and focused long enough, the book might succeed in its goal.

Be sure to be up on all your grammar terminology before diving in. It will help you understand sentences like these in the "reminder" sections of each chapter:
"Have I set off metadiscourse markers with commas where an emphasis on the marker would be useful?"
or
"Have I used the there-transformation and cleft sentences effectively--but not too frequently?"

If you're not having to use this book for a class, I'd pass. If you're looking for help with basic grammar, this isn't it -- this is grammar on an advanced level.

I generally keep school books for reference, but I'm happily giving this one to the library.

About the Author
Michael L. Cain taught introductory biology and a broad range of other biology courses at New Mexico State University and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for thirteen years. He is now writing full time and is affiliated with Bowdoin College in Maine. Dr. Cain has published dozens of scientific articles on topics such as genetic variation in plants, insect foraging behavior, long-distance seed dispersal, and factors that promote speciation in crickets. Dr. Cain is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, and awards, including the Pew Charitable Trust Teacher-Scholar Fellowship and research grants from the National Science Foundation.

Robert Jackson is a retired member of the faculty of the Information Systems Department at Brigham Young University. He has researched, published, and taught in the areas of object-oriented systems development, e-commerce, Web systems, project management, and information systems education. Bringing a wealth of real-world business experience and technical expertise to this book, Dr. Jackson is currently self-employed as a principal in several new e-commerce ventures, where he practices firsthand the analysis, design, and business principles presented in the Seventh Edition. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Brigham Young University.

Reece has an A.B. in Biology from Harvard University, an M.S. in Microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in Bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. She taught biology at Middlesex County College and Queensborough Community College.

classic math stat test that I used to prepare for math qualifying exam at the University of Maryland

Hogg and Craig is one of my favorite texts. It is an intermediate text in mathematical statistics similar to Mood, Graybill and Boes. I took qualifying exams in mathematics for my Masters Degree at the University of Maryland in the early 1970s. One of the exams I took was in statistics. I had little formal training in statistics at the time. Hogg and Craig was the recommended text for the statistics exam. So I bought it and studied out of it on my own. It was very clear with excellent coverage of methods for deriving distributions for random variables and transformations of random variables. I passed my exams and got my highest grades on the statistics exam even though I had more training in abstract algebra. Hogg and Craig really helped. It has been revised since then to maintain currency with statistical developments but it still has maintained its clarity and usefulness. Most of the other reviews that are critical of it are way off base. I am sure that efforts have been made with the numerous revisions to keep the material up to date. Perhaps some critics are correct that it comes up short on some modern advances in Bayesian statistics and other computer-intensive statistical methods. But that should not tarnish its reputation as a classic text in mathematical statistics.

Check if you can get an alternative

There muliple starting points that could generate your interest and need for this book. If you are a math undergrad major, and this is your required reading, stop here, go get it, use it and probably sell second hand -- you won't be doing that much statistics anyway. If you are a grad student with a major other than statistics, and this is a required reading for a class in statisitical inference you are taking at a local Stat department, stop here and go get it anyway; it won't hurt to have it. Everybody else, welcome to continue...

I am now teaching a semester class on introduction to probability theory (the first class in two semester sequence) using this book, and I don't like it very much. It has a little bit strange audience in mind: students who barely have enough math background to do statistics, just the standard 3 semester calculus sequence, but no real analysis and no complex analysis. If you do statistics for living, or consider doing that, you need something more serious measure-theory based (at least that's how I was taught in my grad program, and I see huge advantages in looking down at probability theory from the measure theory prospective).

In other words, it is one of the few books that fill in the gap between all those colorful but very limited and boring "Probability and Statistics for Housewives" the-only-math-class-for-my-general-college-requirement books that steer away from calculus and call a cdf "area under the curve", on one side; and Cramer's Mathematical Methods of Statistics or Kendall/Stuart's Kendall's Advanced Theory of Statistics or Billingsley's Probability and Measure, 3rd Edition (which I also reviewed), on the other side of the rigor spectrum. You get what you paid for: if you invested more into your math training, you would get a much better leverage and understanding of statistics from other books, see below. With this much of calculus, H&C is probably as far as you can go about math statistics.

The material is sequenced in a somewhat awkward manner. Sigma-fields are mentioned in the first chapter, but are not actually used anywhere -- you need measure extension theorems for this stuff to make sense and be useful, and this will shoot you quite far out of the calculus-only class. So, is this an extra stuff that a stat student does not need? Probably not at this level!

Most examples in ealry chapters use well known distributions like uniform, exponential, Poisson, binomial without naming them, and without using the normal distribution that only appears later in the book. I found this confusing, and so will my students, I am afraid. Many of the important concepts, like modes and percentiles of a distribution, or a nice E[u(X)|X]=u(X) shortcut, are hidden in the exercises, so unless you as the instructor stumble across them in the end of a section, or if you are using this book as a reference, then you and/or your students won't see them.

So overall: yes, it is a dated book, it still is an important book for math stat training; but I will only recommend it for somebody in exactly that calculus-only niche. You can use Cramer as a reference; using Hogg and Craig for a reference won't suffice.

Now, what about the alternatives? I am using Wasserman's All of Statistics as a strong supplement in teaching from Hogg and Craig and pulling somewhat nicer examples, exercises, and supplementary results not mentioned in H&C. It also has the same not-so-advanced audience in mind (the course was originally written for computer science students interested in data mining, and a nice extra feature is that Wasserman talks about the computer learning paradigm in parallel to statistical inference paradigm); it is much better written and laid out, with important definitions and theorems clearly highlighted; it structures the material better... BUT! it does not have almost any proofs. However scared you as a student might be of this p-word, your class on mathematical statistics must have enough of those to give you an idea how mathematical statistics works, and how different results in statistics are linked to one another.

Of course another alternative is the classic Cramer "Mathematical Methods of Statistics" textbook that is even more aged (1943) that Hogg and Craig (1958), but it is just better written and more complete. With this one, however, you would need your real analysis, measure theory and complex analysis... or at least some basic understanding of those.

Intro to Math Stats

I am currently a graduate student in Statistics at Miami University of Ohio. For my first and second mathematical statistics courses, we are using this text.

This is a really great book. It is fairly short, and each section is on average only 2-3 pages, but those 2-3 pages are absolutely packed with good stuff. Usually there will be a short introductory paragraph on the topic, and then the authors get right into theorems and examples. There are usually 2-3 theorems and 2-3 examples per section, and they are all organized very well.

The theorems always appear in an appropriate place in the section (i.e. it makes sense in the flow of the explanation of the topic). They are always set up in a manner which makes them easy to understand, and proof of each theorem follows its declaration. If the theorem is too difficult to understand or too long to reasonably fit a paragraph, the authors cite the original publication in which the theorem appeared. Additionally, there are no extraneous proofs, and each one of them is essential to understanding the course material.

The examples usually follow the theorems and will use the result of the theorem as a direct tool to solve the example. Most of the time, the examples will be pretty similar to the homework problems, and provide good hints that will lead you in the right direction when you are attempting the homework. The authors are never trying to be "impressive" with their examples; the clear objective is to help you understand the material without being unnecessarily complicated and/or skipping steps.

The homework is also excellent. It is challenging enough to force you to be competent with all of the material presented, but never leaves you at one of those infamous "google search" dead-ends. Usually the first 8-10 problems in each section are relatively easy if you are grasping the material, and there are lots of answers in the back of the book to aid you. As you get to the end of the homework problems in the section, you will be looking at things that are highly theoretical, are proofs, or require critical thinking. The authors' response to this extra challenge is really the greatest thing I have ever found in a college-level textbook. If a homework problem requires using a "trick" that is beyond the common-sense level, the authors provide a helpful "hint" to point you in the right direction. It is certainly possible to solve the problem without using the hint, but after doing a semester of problems, I can tell you that the hints will save you hours of frustration that you would have spent trying to figure out what little "trick" you were supposed to use to solve the problem.

All in all, I think this is the best mathematics textbook I've ever had, a close second behind "Introductory Abstract Algebra" by Joe Gallian. I think if you are interested in statistics at the graduate level, this is THE BOOK to get you started. I honestly cannot think of any criticisms that I have of this book, and I truly believe it's possible to learn the foundation of mathematical statistics with this book, even if you don't have a professor available to you.

About the Author

Marge Lial has always been interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself has inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, is now affiliated with American River College. Marge is an avid reader and traveler. Her travel experiences often find their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She is particularly interested in archeology. Trips to various digs and ruin sites have produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan.

When John Hornsby enrolled as an undergraduate at Louisiana State University, he was uncertain whether he wanted to study mathematics education or journalism. His ultimate decision was to become a teacher, but after twenty-five years of teaching at the high school and university levels and fifteen years of writing mathematics textbooks, both of his goals have been realized. His love for both teaching and for mathematics is evident in his passion for working with students and fellow teachers as well. His specific professional interests are recreational mathematics, mathematics history, and incorporating graphing calculators into the curriculum. John's personal life is busy as he devotes time to his family (wife Gwen, and sons Chris, Jack, and Josh). He has been a rabid baseball fan all of his life. John's other hobbies include numismatics (the study of coins) and record collecting. He loves the music of the 1960s and has an extensive collection of the recorded works of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

David Schneider has taught mathematics at universities for over 34 years and has authored 36 books. He has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Oberlin College and a PhD in mathematics from MIT. During most of his professional career, he was on the faculty of the University of Maryland--College Park. His hobbies include travel, dancing, bicycling, and hiking.

Callie Daniels has always had a passion for learning mathematics and brings that passion into the classroom with her students. She attended the University of the Ozarks on an athletic scholarship, playing both basketball and tennis. While there, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Mathematics Education as well as the NAIA Academic All-American Award. She has two master’s degrees: one in Applied Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Missouri-Rolla, the second in Adult Education from the University of Missouri- St. Louis. Her hobbies include watching her sons play sports, riding horses, fishing, shooting photographs, and playing guitar. Her professional interests include improving success in the community college mathematics sequence, using technology to enhance students’ understanding of mathematics, and creating materials that support classroom teaching and student understanding.

It's a rip-off!

Book Searches Suck

It was excellent to find the book which is exactly what I needed for the class at a discounted rate compared to what the school was selling it for. Though I purchased this particular version because it had the access code as well. A great deal, right? WRONG!! Make sure you check which access code you need. Unfortunately, it's hard to do that until after the course starts. This book came with the code for MyMathLab, the course requires a code for MyMathLab Plus. They are not the same, don't get them confused. Just in case any are wondering, I am taking my class through Central Texas College. So now I'm stuck with an access code that I can't use and will never have a need for, and I have to purchase the correct access code for upwards of $100. Altogether, cost me more than what it would have cost had I gone through the school to begin with. Easiest way to go? Rent the book for the length you need for the class, and just buy the access code online when the class starts. You'll save $$ that way. Wish someone had posted that when I bought my book, smh.

About the Author

Bob Blitzer is a native of Manhattan and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with dual majors in mathematics and psychology (minor: English literature) from the City College of New York. His unusual combination of academic interests led him toward a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Miami and a doctorate in behavioral sciences from Nova University. Bob’s love for teaching mathematics was nourished for nearly 30 years at Miami Dade College, where he received numerous teaching awards, including Innovator of the Year from the League for Innovations in the Community College and an endowed chair based on excellence in the classroom. In addition to his Developmental Algebra Series, Bob has written textbooks covering college algebra, algebra and trigonometry, precalculus, and liberal arts mathematics, all published by Pearson Education. When not secluded in his Northern California writer’s cabin, Bob can be found hiking the beaches and trails of Point Reyes National Seashore, and tending to the chores required by his beloved entourage of horses, chickens, and irritable roosters.

Lighthearted algebra text

Students: be sure to buy THIS expensive package if your university requires MyMathLab access. You will end up paying more if you just buy the textbook and then the access separately. You should be able to contact your school or instructor to find out if MyMathLab will be used throughout the course. Also, you will need internet access to use MyMathLab.

Blitzer approaches a subject that most students dread - algebra - in a lighthearted, interesting, and fun way. The Learning Guide (included with the MyMathLab Access card, via MyMathLab > Learning Guide) is a phenomenal resource: organized by section objective, the Learning Guide presents a worked example problem. On the side, there is a blank pencil problem with an area left for the student to try each one. This has been highly successful and I use it throughout lecture. The feedback from students has been positive, and they have an easier time with homework with the Learning Guide to refer back to.

The textbook format is very user-friendly with the chapter summaries and "Good Question" features. The only improvement I could offer would be to make the PowerPoint more concise and usable. Most instructors would prefer to write examples out, step-by-step, so PowerPoint is most useful at imparting information such as definitions, visual aids, etc. The included PPT is incredibly long, so it must be spliced and edited to practically use in a lecture setting.

Regarding MyMathLab access: my favorite features are the Item Analysis, Multimedia Library (with complete video lectures - perfect for students who are sick and miss a class), and Study Plan. The study plan creates individualized assignments for students, based on their areas of difficulty. The Study Plan would be impossible to create without this program - which makes the little inconveniences of inputting answers into MML worthwhile.

BUYER BEWARE!!!!!! NO LAB ACCESS FOR RENTALS!!!!!! MISLEADING PRODUCT TITLE!!!!!!

If i could give it no stars I would. Do not rent this book if you need access to the lab as it does not come with it. It is not clearly specified that it does not come with it. Of coarse the very misleading title of this product says otherwise. First and last time renting a book from Amazon.

Little advice after finishing the class: I have determined that if you don't mind reading this book online the math lab access comes with a virtual text book. Since the math lab cost $95 by itself and the rental doesn't come with it. You can save big bucks by just using the online version. Even if you need a hard book, you can find a used one for cheaper then you can rent this one for and then buy the Math lab separate, and had I known this rental did not come with the math lab, I would have just done that. By the time you rent this book and pay for the math labl you could have bought a new book that comes with access. Hopefully my experiences will help other college students save a little money.

Wonderful place to buy your college books! So much cheaper than the college book store, and even cheaper than websites that claim to have to lowest price! This book also comes with the access card! Which you must have for most classes. If you bought the two items separately it would be more than the combined price. Great book and ships quickly!

About the Author

Joel Hass received his PhD from the University of California—Berkeley. He is currently a professor of mathematics at the University of California—Davis. He has coauthored six widely used calculus texts as well as two calculus study guides. He is currently on the editorial board of Geometriae Dedicata and Media-Enhanced Mathematics. He has been a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University and of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, and he was a Sloan Research Fellow. Hass’s current areas of research include the geometry of proteins, three dimensional manifolds, applied math, and computational complexity. In his free time, Hass enjoys kayaking.

Maurice D. Weir holds a DA and MS from Carnegie-Mellon University and received his BS at Whitman College. He is a Professor Emeritus of the Department of Applied Mathematics at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Weir enjoys teaching Mathematical Modeling and Differential Equations. His current areas of research include modeling and simulation as well as mathematics education. Weir has been awarded the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal, the Superior Civilian Service Award, and the Schieffelin Award for Excellence in Teaching. He has coauthored eight books, including the University Calculus series and the twelfth edition of Thomas’ Calculus.

George B. Thomas, Jr. (late) of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was a professor of mathematics for thirty-eight years; he served as the executive officer of the department for ten years and as graduate registration officer for five years. Thomas held a spot on the board of governors of the Mathematical Association of America and on the executive committee of the mathematics division of the American Society for Engineering Education. His book, Calculus and Analytic Geometry, was first published in 1951 and has since gone through multiple revisions. The text is now in its twelfth edition and continues to guide students through their calculus courses. He also co-authored monographs on mathematics, including the text Probability and Statistics.

Short, concise, more rigorous examples

I own a few calculus books, some of which are probably the most widely used, including Ron Larson's and James Stewart's textbooks. However, I find Thomas' text a lot more appealing. Why? The examples in the book are usually a lot more challenging than some the majority of the problems, which ensures that you've actually understood the concepts or problem solving technique. In addition, the number of problems is kept at a fairly reasonable amount while other texts make you do many "simpler" problems, which in turn is a waste of your time if you are being tested on the core concepts, per se, integration by parts. There are only a few problems that should make you feel comfortable, and Thomas gives you a very broad number of problems that test you on these specific problems. I am not saying Thomas' book is not challenging, but the sections are shorter because the examples are rather challenging, which made me like this book a lot more than the competition.

A MUST HAVE if you are new to InDesign

Buckle your seat belt, this is going to be long. About me: I am a mostly self-taught graphics manipulator that primarily used open source and free software before finding Creative Cloud. My biggest aversions to Adobe products in the past was the expense and the learning curve. This book GREATLY erases the second concern and I plan to purchase the rest in the series for CS6 after I'm finished! (Creative Cloud took away the first concern about the price of the creative suite software).

If you've ever watched a Youtube video to learn how to do something with an image, this book is perfect for you. It really is a step-by-step guide for anyone new to InDesign, and graphics and page layout. For example, one of the tips in Chapter 3 explains how a placeholder frame with an x in it is traditionally used for graphics frames rather than text frames. It might feel like the classroom in a book is insulting your intelligence if you have used previous versions of InDesign. I don't know for sure as I have never used InDesign until yesterday (I'm on Chapter 4); I mostly used openoffice to export to PDF but the scope of my newest project of making a digital magazine made me look for a software title like InDesign where I could make what I call templates and they call masters.

Each chapter is a tutorial in itself and the files you use as the examples are available even if you buy the Kindle version (which I did). I am reading it on my Kindle Fire as I'm working through the book on my laptop which is working well. I especially love that when there is an unfamiliar publishing term (like gutter, bleed, or pica) I can highlight, see the full definition and find out what it means exactly as my jargon is rusty. I like using the Fire to read the manual so I do not have to switch back and forth between screens on my laptop like I would with other tutorials. Before this project, the only layout experience I had was high school yearbook and limited exposure when I wrote for my college newspaper, all 10+ years ago. The tutorials in Classroom in a Book have clear written instructions but also visual aids for the step you are on with screen shots. It also has an overview for each mini-section inside of a chapter or lesson, review questions and the answers. I love the overview at the beginning of the mini-sections (what I'm calling the sections between each Save the File instruction when it feels you've reached a major point)! I'm a figure-it-out kind of learner, so as I progress in a chapter, I find myself reading the overview and seeing if I can accomplish it without needing the step-by-step guide. Then I use the step-by-step part to check my work!

It does not have a section about general publication design, but I think that's outside the scope of this book since there is so much one can do with InDesign. I want to make a digital magazine, but another buyer might just want to make holiday cards for family and scrapbook pages for a website or a travel brochure. If you are new to design in general, I'd recommend reading about planning out the type of project you are working on. For example, for my magazine, I know to make a paper and pen sketch of the pages in the order I want them (where there's an ad, an article, the masthead etc.) and to have the pieces ready when I'm ready to start making the publication. This is classic work flow for publications, a lot like quilting but with deadlines and lots of coffee. The hardest part I'm having with the software is thinking in picas. From my web experience and other image manipulation projects, I think in pixels, and I'm still a little foggy on the conversion.

If you are looking for a viable replacement of a class teaching InDesign, I would absolutely buy this book. I've already gifted two copies to the people who will be helping me with my magazine. And, if you are struggling with the lack of interactivity, I suggest you check out tv.adobe.com and watch a few videos on InDesign so you can "see" someone interact with the software much like an instructor would on the Smartboard or other interface in a college class. I did this before I found this book and was filling notebooks with the steps I was seeing and then trying them out on dummy projects. This book makes that process much easier! But watching the videos still helped me nail down the way the software interacts with you when you right click etc.

I am very thankful this series is here and I don't have to pay for an expensive class to learn the basics that would have been easily ten or more times the cost of the Kindle version. So thank you, Adobe!

Almost Perfect

I give this book 4 stars because I am very impressed with the way it was put together. I'm an old PageMaker user and I really did not know what to expect. I assumed that my work with PageMaker wouldn't help me much, and I was right. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn InDesign CS6 in the fastest way possible. The reason I didn't give it that 5th star, is probably more about me than it is about the book. The tutorials were fun, and I'm not sure, but I suppose it covers the basics of everything InDesign CS6 has to offer. There were only a few places where I had to go back over an exercise when I did not get the results shown in the book; and in every case, it's because I missed a sentence, or it didn't register at the time I read it the first time. This is not a criticism by any means, but for me, after reading the book and doing the exercises, I'm embarrassed to admit that I still don't feel like I can jump in and create a work of my own. The samples are superb don't get me wrong, but the next time the writers might throw in a chapter or two that starts you with absolutely nothing and teaches you how to design your own creation from scratch--no graphics, no text, no borders and no guides. Just a blank screen with nothing to work with but your mouse and the keyboard. Maybe it will all come back to me as I begin to create my own work. In conclusion, you can't go wrong with this book. Everything you need is in there, but you'll have to use your own imagination to start using the product. I can envision myself pouring back through the pages to try and remember, "Now, how did they do that?" Skip the Kindle version, you simply have to have the graphics in front of you to do the exercises.
