About the Author
Jeffrey Bennett
Jeffrey Bennett holds a B.A. (1981) in biophysics from the University of California, San Diego, and an M.S. and Ph.D. (1987) in astrophysics from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He has taught at every level from preschool through graduate school, including more than 50 college classes in astronomy, physics, mathematics, and education. He served 2 years as a visiting senior scientist at NASA headquarters, where he created NASA’s “IDEAS” program, started a program to fly teachers aboard NASA’s airborne observatories (including SOFIA), and worked on numerous educational programs for the Hubble Space Telescope and other space science missions. He also proposed the idea for and helped develop both the Colorado Scale Model Solar System on the CU-Boulder campus and the Voyage Scale Model Solar System on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. In addition to this astronomy textbook, he is also lead author of college-level textbooks in astrobiology, mathematics, and statistics (all from Pearson); of critically acclaimed two books for the general public including , On the Cosmic Horizon (Pearson Addison-Wesley, 2001) and Beyond UFOs (Princeton University Press, 2008/2011) and Math for Life (Roberts & Co, 2012); and an of the award-winning series of children’s books that includes Max Goes to the Moon, Max Goes to Mars, Max Goes to Jupiter, and Max’s Ice Age AdventureThe Wizard Who Saved the World. When not working, he enjoys participating in masters swimming and in the daily adventures of life with his wife, Lisa; his children, Grant and Brooke; and his dog, Cosmo. Megan Donahue
Megan Donahue is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University. Her current research is mainly about using X-ray, UV, infrared, and visible light to study clusters of galaxies: their contents–dark matter, hot gas, galaxies, active galactic nuclei–and what they reveal about the contents of the universe and how galaxies form and evolve. She grew up on a farm in Nebraska and received an S.B.. in physics from MIT, where she began her research career as an X-ray astronomer. She has a Ph.D. in astrophysics from the University of Colorado. Her Ph.D. thesis on theory and optical observations of intergalactic and intracluster gas won the 1993 Trumpler Award from the Astronomical Society for the Pacific for an outstanding astrophysics doctoral dissertation in North America. She continued postdoctoral research as a Carnegie Fellow at Carnegie Observatories in Pasadena, California, and later as an STScI Institute Fellow at Space Telescope. Megan was a staff astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute until 2003, when she joined the MSU faculty. Megan is married to Mark Voit, and they collaborate on many projects, including this textbook and the raising of their children, Michaela, Sebastian, and Angela. Between the births of Sebastian and Angela, Megan qualified for and ran the Boston Marathon. These days, Megan runs trails, orienteers, and plays piano and bass guitar whenever her children allow it.

Nicholas Schneider
Nicholas Schneider is an associate professor in the Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences at the University of Colorado and a researcher in the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. He received his B.A. in physics and astronomy from Dartmouth College in 1979 and his Ph.D. in planetary science from the University of Arizona in 1988. In 1991, he received the National Science Foundation’s Presidential Young Investigator Award. His research interests include planetary atmospheres and planetary astronomy, with a focus on the odd case of Jupiter’s moon Io. He enjoys teaching at all levels and is active in efforts to improve undergraduate astronomy education. Off the job, he enjoys exploring the outdoors with his family and figuring out how things work.

Mark Voit
Mark Voit is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University. He earned his A.B. in astrophysical sciences at Princeton University and his Ph.D. in astrophysics at the University of Colorado in 1990. He continued his studies at the California Institute of Technology, where he was a research fellow in theoretical astrophysics, and then moved on to Johns Hopkins University as a Hubble Fellow. Before going to Michigan State, Mark worked in the Office of Public Outreach at the Space Telescope, where he developed museum exhibitions about the Hubble Space Telescope and helped design NASA’s award-winning HubbleSite. His research interests range from interstellar processes in our own galaxy to the clustering of galaxies in the early universe. He is married to coauthor Megan Donahue, and cooks terrific meals for her and their three children. Mark likes getting outdoors whenever possible and particularly enjoys running, mountain biking, canoeing, orienteering, and adventure racing. He is also author of the popular book Hubble Space Telescope: New Views of the Universe.

BOOK SHIPPED FROM ACROSS THE WORLD?????

Every other textbook that I've purchased through Amazon has been received within a few days. This took weeks. Homework was due, professor said she'd wait no longer. Had to purchase an e-text access card online through the publisher (for $90) to do the homework. Textbook and access card finally arrived wrapped together in plastic Needed the book, not the access card. Asked SuperBook Deals if I could return just the unopened/unused access card, they (indirectly) told me no (twice). They will only give refunds if the purchase has not been unwrapped. No refund for me, no future purchases for them.

Rip off. Even though clearly advertised as including access card, it did not have one. I could have bought the book alone for half the price. I should have read the reviews.

Missing Pages

Ordered the product as new and from Amazon. Unlike others, my access code worked fine and the book arrived in an unused condition. However, I purchased the book and not just the access code because I like reading from a textbook and being able to mark it, especially when the material gets complicated. Now that I am entering finals time and reading the last chapters I have discovered that about 200 pages (Skips from Chapter 14 to Chapter 24) are missing from the book.

About the Author

Marge Lial has always been interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself has inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, is now affiliated with American River College. Marge is an avid reader and traveler. Her travel experiences often find their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She is particularly interested in archeology. Trips to various digs and ruin sites have produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan.

When John Hornsby enrolled as an undergraduate at Louisiana State University, he was uncertain whether he wanted to study mathematics education or journalism. His ultimate decision was to become a teacher, but after twenty-five years of teaching at the high school and university levels and fifteen years of writing mathematics textbooks, both of his goals have been realized. His love for both teaching and for mathematics is evident in his passion for working with students and fellow teachers as well. His specific professional interests are recreational mathematics, mathematics history, and incorporating graphing calculators into the curriculum. John's personal life is busy as he devotes time to his family (wife Gwen, and sons Chris, Jack, and Josh). He has been a rabid baseball fan all of his life. John's other hobbies include numismatics (the study of coins) and record collecting. He loves the music of the 1960s and has an extensive collection of the recorded works of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

David Schneider has taught mathematics at universities for over 34 years and has authored 36 books. He has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Oberlin College and a PhD in mathematics from MIT. During most of his professional career, he was on the faculty of the University of Maryland--College Park. His hobbies include travel, dancing, bicycling, and hiking.

Callie Daniels has always had a passion for learning mathematics and brings that passion into the classroom with her students. She attended the University of the Ozarks on an athletic scholarship, playing both basketball and tennis. While there, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Mathematics Education as well as the NAIA Academic All-American Award. She has two master’s degrees: one in Applied Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Missouri-Rolla, the second in Adult Education from the University of Missouri- St. Louis. Her hobbies include watching her sons play sports, riding horses, fishing, shooting photographs, and playing guitar. Her professional interests include improving success in the community college mathematics sequence, using technology to enhance students’ understanding of mathematics, and creating materials that support classroom teaching and student understanding.

Excellent book for precalc learners

This was one of the best precalc books I have ever used. I researched a lot of precalc books in the library before being introduced to this one. It is well put together, the problems are difficult but relevant to later math, and the examples/lessons prior to the problems are really well done. Excellent learning book for math students or for an older guy like myself looking to freshen up on his/her math skills.

About the Author

Mark L. Berenson is Professor of Management and Information Systems at Montclair State University and also Professor Emeritus of Statistics and Computer Information Systems at Bernard M. Baruch College (City University of New York). He received his B.A. in economic statistics and an M.B.A. in business statistics from City College of New York and a Ph.D. in business from the City University of New York. Berenson currently teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in statistics and in operations management in the School of Business and an undergraduate course in international justice and human rights that he co-developed in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Over the years, he has received serval awards for teaching and for innovative contributions to statistics education. In 2005, he was the first recipient of The Catherine A. Becker Service for Educational Excellence Award at Montclair State University. Berenson’s research has been published in numerous journals, including Decision Sciences Journal of Innovative Education, Review of Business Research, The American Statistician, Communications in Statistics, and Journal of Management Sciences and Applied Cybernetics, and Journal of Health Administration Education. He is co-author of 11 statistics texts, including Statistics for Managers Using Microsoft Excel and Business Statistics: A First Course.

David M. Levine is Professor Emeritus of Statistics and Computer Information Systems at Baruch College (City University of New York). He received B.B.A. and M.B.A. degrees in statistics from City College of New York and a Ph.D. from New York University in industrial engineering and operations research. He is nationally recognized as a leading innovator in statistics education and is the co-author of 14 books, including such best- selling statistics textbooks as Statistics for Managers Using Microsoft Excel, Basic Business Statistics: Concepts and Applications, Business Statistics: A First Course, and Applied Statistics for Engineers and Scientists Using Microsoft Excel and Minitab.

He also is the co-author of Even You Can Learn Statistics: A Guide for Everyone Who Has Ever Been Afraid of Statistics, currently in its second edition, Six Sigma for Green Belts and Champions and Design for Six Sigma for Green Belts and Champions, and the author of Statistics for Six Sigma Green Belts, all published by FT Press, a Pearson imprint, and Quality Management, third edition, McGraw-Hill/Irwin. He is also the author of Video Review of Statistics and Video Review of Probability, both published by Video Aided Instruction, and the statistics module of the MBA primer published by Cengage Learning. He has published articles in various journals, including Psychometrika, The American Statistician, Communications in Statistics, Decision Sciences Journal of Innovative Education, Multivariate Behavioral Research, Journal of Systems Management, Quality Progress, and The American Anthropologist, and he has given numerous talks at the Decision Sciences Institute (DSI), American Statistical Association (ASA), and Making Statistics More Effective in Schools and Business (MSMESB) conferences. Levine has also received several awards for outstanding teaching and curriculum development from Baruch College.

Kathryn A, Szabat is Associate Professor and Chair of Business Systems and Analytics at LaSalle University. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in business statistics and operations management. Szabat’s research has been published in International Journal of Applied Decision Sciences Accounting Education, Journal of Applied Business and Economics, Journal of Healthcare Management, and Journal of Management Studies. Scholarly chapters have appeared in Managing Adaptability, Intervention, and People in Enterprise Information Systems; Managing, Trade, Economies and International Business; Encyclopedia of Statistics in Behavioral Science; and Statistical Methods in Longitudinal Research. Szabat has provided statistical advice to numerous business, non-business, and academic communities. Her more recent involvement has been in the areas of education, medicine, and nonprofit capacity building. Szabat received a B.S. in mathematics from State University of New York at Albany and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in statistics, with a cognate in operations research, from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Improved my grade reading this book along with the class lectures.

Read it-you'll get much more out of that $1000.00 class you're taking. It really improved my grade on the second test when I read the chapters along with the lectures. I got 100% on that one. So yes! I can't help but recommend this book if you are taking a management course.

formulas weren't checked for correctness so watch out.

this book is terrible. it provides no formula for rate of return and then expects you to get it from this formula, which if checked is false. Luckily my gf had me there to double check this "math" books math. maybe you'll do better in the 14th release.

My favorite chapters:
Chapter 1:
Tim Wright does an excellent job of explaining the concepts behind "Progressive Enhancement". Although I was aware of the separation of CSS, JavaScript and HTML content, I had never come across the term "Progressive Enhancement" or the history behind it. Tim does an excellent job here introducing PE and the history/logic behind it. In my opinion, understanding the philosophy of PE is very essential for modern web programmers.

Chapter 8: Communicating with the server through Ajax
This is a very important topic. Ajax is the underlying paradigm for modern web communication. Tim does an excellent job explaining Ajax and the various forms.

Chapter 10: Libraries with Javascipt
No Javascript book is complete without the best JS library out there - JQuery. Tim does a clean job of introducing JQuery and the various options.

Chapter 11: HTML5 Javascript APIs
HTML5 brings in new html elements and some changes to JS. Decent introduction to the changes are described in this chapter. I found the section on "Web Workers" quite useful.

Overall Impression:
This is an excellent book to be added to your technical library. If you need advanced treatment of topics in Javascript, you can go for a dedicated book or search online. But for quick reference or to learn about various things, this is excellent.

A great book for learning JavaScript

Tim Wright's book presents in a unique, easy read way, the fundamentals and the concepts behind JavaScript. The author does a great job of presenting the language without being to overwhelming with information and I think this makes it a very useful book for anyone who wants to learn JavaScript or to get to know the fundamentals better.

The book provides useful information about the concepts of JavaScript and how this language should be used in relation to HTML & CSS and goes from the basic things like accessing the DOM, understanding how variables, functions and loops work, to more advanced concepts like JSON and HTML5 JavaScript APIs. It also looks into some of the most used JavaScript libraries and presents the advantages and disadvantages of using them. The book presents code examples along the way which makes the content easier to follow and understand. However I didn't find all the code examples particular useful and some readers might feel that the book lacks some more in depth info about some of the fundamentals presented.

I like the writing style of the author and I will definitely look for other books written by him. If you are interested in JavaScript this is a book you should not skip. I enjoyed reading it and I would recommend it to anyone interested in the subject.

Something for every front end developer

It's telling that the subtitle to this book is "A Hands-On Guide to the Fundamentals of Modern JavaScript". Much like kids who have grown up never having not had a computer or access to the internet, so it is that the majority of website users have taken for granted the front-end power of JavaScript to aid their web browsing experience.

Without JavaScript many modern websites would break, or their functionality would be considerably reduced. Many shopping experiences rely on some form of front-end manipulation, either to validate a form or to update a basket. And with the advent of tablet and smart phones we are seeing JavaScript and its related libraries and frameworks, jQuery, MooTools and YUI to name but a few, as the worthy successor to Flash-based websites.

Tim Wright's book helpfully looks at both the history and principles behind developing with JavaScript. He helps us with terms such as Progressive Enhancement and the role played by both developers and designers.

The book gently takes the reader through frequently used terminology such a storage, strings, DOM and events. Examples are simple to understand and are backed up by online, downloadable versions.

Though having spent many years developing for the web I still find it helpful to go back to go back to books like this to revise my knowledge around storage using arrays, JSON and HTML5. It's pleasing also to see functions, variables and loops explained in a clear manner. And to look at the accessibility issues around AJAX.

I'm glad this book exists and have shared it with a younger member of the team who may otherwise have been dropped in the deep end. We are happily discussing AJAX calls, traveling through the DOM and when not to rely on libraries.

A very useful addition to our bookshelf.

About the Author

Marvin Bittinger has been teaching math at the university level for more than thirty-eight years. Since 1968, he has been employed at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, and is now professor emeritus of mathematics education. Professor Bittinger has authored over 190 publications on topics ranging from basic mathematics to algebra and trigonometry to applied calculus. He received his BA in mathematics from Manchester College and his PhD in mathematics education from Purdue University. Special honors include Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy and his election to the Manchester College Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1999. His hobbies include hiking in Utah, baseball, golf, and bowling. Professor Bittinger has also had the privilege of speaking at many mathematics conventions, most recently giving a lecture entitled "Baseball and Mathematics." In addition, he also has an interest in philosophy and theology, in particular, apologetics. Professor Bittinger currently lives in Carmel, Indiana, with his wife, Elaine. He has two grown and married sons, Lowell and Chris, and four granddaughters.

David Ellenbogen has taught math at the college level for twenty-two years, spending most of that time in the Massachusetts and Vermont community college systems, where he has served on both curriculum and developmental math committees. He has also taught at St. Michael's College and the University of Vermont. Professor Ellenbogen has been active in the Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges since 1985, having served on its Developmental Mathematics Committee and as a delegate, and has been a member of the Mathematical Association of America since 1979. He has authored dozens of publications on topics ranging from prealgebra to calculus and has delivered lectures at numerous conferences on the use of language in mathematics. Professor Ellenbogen received his BA in mathematics from Bates College and his MA in community college mathematics education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. A cofounder of the Colchester Vermont Recycling Program, Professor Ellenbogen has a deep love for the environment and the outdoors, especially in his home state of Vermont. In his spare time, he enjoys playing keyboard in the band Soularium, volunteering as a community mentor, hiking, biking, and skiing. He has two sons, Monroe and Zack.

Scott Surgent received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in mathematics from the University of California—Riverside, and has taught mathematics at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, since 1994. He is an avid sports fan and has authored books on hockey, baseball, and hiking. Scott enjoys hiking and climbing the mountains of the western United States. He was active in search and rescue, including six years as an Emergency Medical Technician with the Central Arizona Mountain Rescue Association (Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office) from 1998 until 2004. Scott and his wife, Beth, live in Scottsdale, Arizona.

About the Author
Paul G. Hewitt was a Silver Medallist Flyweight Boxing Champion for New England State at the age of 17. He was then a cartoonist, sign painter, and uranium prospector before beginning his physics studies.

Hewitt's first book, "Conceptual Physics," now in its Ninth Edition, was published in 1971, while he was teaching at City College of San Francisco. He has also served as a guest lecturer at the University of California at Berkeley, the University of California at Santa Cruz, the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and most recently at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Hewitt recently retired from teaching at the City College of San Francisco and at San Francisco's world-famous science museum, the Exploratorium.

John Suchocki received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry in 1987 from Virginia Commonwealth University, where his research focused on the isolation and characterization of natural products. After a two year post-doc in medicinal chemistry/pharmacology at the Medical College of Virginia, John became a visiting assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Hawaii at Manoa where he began working with his uncle, Paul Hewitt, on "Conceptual Physical Science," After a couple of years at the Manoa campus, John transferred to and eventually received tenure from Leeward Community College, one of the University of Hawaii's community colleges. At Leeward CC, his research efforts turned to chemical education, with particular emphasis on liberal arts chemistry courses and distance learning technology. After a decade in Hawaii, John relocated to Vermont with his wife and three children, where he now teaches liberal arts chemistry at Saint Michael's College. Concurrent to his writingand teaching careers, John is also the writer of "Conceptual Chemistry," now in its Second Edition, and a producer of multimedia content for science education, including his "Conceptual Chemistry Alive!" CD-ROM series. Leslie Hewitt, a former teacher at Westlake Elementary School in Daly City, CA, received her B.A. in Geology from San Francisco State University.

About the Author
For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student's perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience, along with stories from the field-including those of former students, now in health careers-that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her texts and laboratory manuals are known. In her ongoing commitment to students and her realization of the challenges they face, Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women returning to college after a hiatus or who are attending college for the first time and would otherwise be unable to continue with their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. MariebScience Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and generously contributed to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory that bears her name. In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor. Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings "InterActive Physiology¨" CD-ROM series, and is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS). "Anatomy & Physiology," Second Edition is the latest expression of her commitment to student needs in their pursuit of the study of A&P.
