Review

"This text stacks op very well against its competition because it is concise. The difficulty in choosing texts on critical thinking is that they are either too complicated, do not offer enough coverage, or use a particular discipline to explicate critical thinking. What makes this text effective is that it is easy to work with and applicable to any and all disciplines."

    - Susan Quarrell, Lehman College

From the Inside Flap
To the Instructor

This book is intended as a guidebook for learning to think critically in a discipline, a subject matter, an area, or a field of study. I use these terms more or less interchangeably throughout the book. It applies to disciplines taught at any level of generality, at any educational level. This includes courses in humanities, social and natural sciences, business, arts, nursing, international studies, and so on. It includes multidisciplinary courses, but it is in no way confined to them.

I specifically mean to include courses that emphasize doing as well as understanding: composition courses stand out in particular. (There are exercises suitable for student writing, and the text promotes full integration of the composition course with other courses students are taking, across the curriculum.) But the book applies to any discipline that emphasizes mindful doing: physical education, nursing, business, math, veterinary science, agriculture, foreign languages. (In fact, in the purest sense, all courses emphasize doing: learning physics is learning to do physics. Learning physics is learning how to actively think one's way through the physical world.)

Although this book was not written to be the main text in a course specifically in critical thinking, I have used it that way in my own courses, and many teachers of critical thinking have used Richard Paul's model in their courses.

In my critical-thinking courses, I have asked my students to use the model to analyze and evaluate newspaper editorials; to apply it to problems in their personal lives; to analyze their relationships with other people; to analyze, compare, and evaluate news sources and advertising; to evaluate their own study skills; to think through art works and a wide variety of other topics. Several times I have taught my critical-thinking course where the only other texts required were the .texts from other courses the student was taking. There, the goal was to help the students learn to think through the disciplines or subject matter they were studying in those other courses. What permits this diversity is the great flexibility of Paul's model of critical thinking.

This book is a guide to critical thinking across the curriculum and is intended to be inexpensive, so that it can be used economically as an adjunct text in a course. I have tried to keep it short enough so that students can be required to read it all the way through near the beginning of the semester. That way they can refer back to it again and again, applying specific critical-thinking concepts to different parts of the subject matter as the course moves along, gradually coming to integrate those parts. Learning to Think Things Through works best, I believe, when used in a course that has another text. In most cases, that will be the main required book for the course, but it needn't be. The "text" can consist of readings brought in by the teacher or by the students. It can be video or audio material of any sort. It can include chapters, specific problems, case studies, primary sources, journal articles, virtually any outside material. Many questions in this book direct students to apply critical-thinking concepts to the texts in the course.

Many teachers in a field or discipline want their students to learn to think critically about the subject matter they are studying, and to learn to think about the world in terms of that subject matter. They want their students not to be passive recipients of information absorbed from the teacher or the text. Rather, teachers want their students to become active learners who pay attention to crucial elements of reasoning, such as assumptions, purposes, implications and consequences, and who do this in a way that meets high intellectual standards. This book is intended to help accomplish those goals. Using Learning to Think Things Through in a Course

This book can be used by teachers in a range of ways. The way of using the text that I favor is as a highly integrated part of the course as a whole. The goal, again, is to keep students actively thinking their way through the course and the subject matter, rather than sinking back into being passive recipients.

As the teacher, I can have them identify key concepts of the discipline for each chapter, unit, lesson, lecture, and presentation. I can have them construct applications of the concepts from their own experience, integrate the concepts, and draw up concept maps. Students can be given frequent practice at formulating key questions, finding relevant information, evaluating its significance, and searching for alternatives. I can have the students analyze readings or important course material right from the beginning of the course.

In addition to giving students ongoing practice at thinking critically within the discipline, activities like these furnish the teacher with valuable insight into where exactly their students are in the course. These activities can be done in group work or individually, in class or as homework assignments, in written or oral form, with or without specific feedback from the teacher. Activities like these, and many others, are identified in Learning to Think Things Through, and there are exercises on such thinking activities at the end of each chapter.

There are any number of other ways this book can be used in courses. Teachers can have students work through the book on their own. Assigning exercises at the end of each chapter (some of which have suggested answers) can significantly help students in their critical thinking with minimal input from the instructor.

Many teachers find it valuable to devote some class time to helping students learn how to assess their own work and the work of fellow students, giving one another critical feedback on the thinking. The elements (Chapter 3) and standards (Chapter 4) are an ideal vehicle for this. Devoting this class time, even though it might seem at first glance to cut down on the amount of time devoted to teaching the discipline, allows teachers to give frequent short written assignments throughout the semester (shown to be highly effective in helping students retain and internalize the discipline) and to make sure students receive at least some feedback on them. It does this without increasing the amount of valuable time the teacher spends on reading and correcting student assignments. The brunt of learning is placed where it ought to be, as a responsibility of the students themselves. Teachers are freer to become the resource and the facilitator of learning that they really are.

The elements, standards, and subject-matter concepts make this task of self-assessment focused and beneficial both for the student being assessed and the student doing the assessing. Both are engaged in doing critical thinking about the subject matter. This book contains exercises specifically on this, and many more can be readily constructed using the elements and standards.

Consider a simple example. One of the elements is purpose, and one of the standards is clearness. In my courses, I give frequent written assignments. For each of them, I ask students to write down at the top what, in their best judgment, is the purpose of the assignment. This in and of itself helps students to focus their thinking (and to be aware that the assignments in fact have a purpose—that is sometimes a surprise!). Then I ask students, in pairs or in groups of four, to assess how clearly each statement of purpose was written. That gives students specific critical thinking feedback on an important standard, and the clarity of their responses almost invariably improves. Similar feedback can be given from student to student about any of the elements and any of the standards.

One further note on using Learning to Think Things Through: the model presented here is a highly integrated model, and there is great benefit in having students read the entire book near the beginning of the course, rather than piecing it out as the course progresses. The flexibility and comprehensiveness of the model are not as available to students when they learn one part at a time and then try to get a sense of the whole. After getting a sense of the whole, students can then work on those aspects that give them difficulty. The Model

This book is built on Richard Paul's model of critical thinking. I wrote Learning to Think Things Through because there is no short, connected presentation of this model suitable for use in a subject-matter course. Essential parts of it are set forth in Paul's Critical Thinking: What Every Person Needs to Survive in a Rapidly Changing World and in Critical Thinking: Basic Theory and Instructional Structures. The model is the one Paul, Linda Elder, 1, and a number of other workshop facilitators at the Center for Critical Thinking have used in workshops and academies over the years.

The model has quantitative empirical backing. Jennifer Reed, in her doctoral dissertation, tested Paul's model in history classes at the community college level. It fared well not just compared to a didactic course in history, but compared to an alternative model of critical thinking where the key concepts were taught implicitly rather than explicitly (with no significant differences in knowledge of history content).

Two parts of this model form the core of this book.

Elements of Reasoning. These are the central concepts of reasoning itself. Paul often describes them as the "parts" of thinking. When I reason through something, I may be trying to do any number of things: I may be trying to see the implications of holding a certain point of view, for example, or I may be trying to come to some conclusion, based on certain assumptions I start out with. I may be deciding that I need more information to decide this question at issue. I may simply wonder what my purpose is in a certain venture, and what alternatives there are. All of these, and many others, are examples of trying to reason through something. The elements of reasoning are an attempt to extract the common concepts from this virtually unlimited set of reasoning activities. Thus, to learn to reason is to come to mastery of concepts like implications, point of view, conclusions, assumptions, information, question at issue, and purpose. Concepts like these are elements of reasoning. Chapter 3 is devoted to the elements. Standards of Critical Thinking. It can be seriously misleading to say that critical thinking is learning how to think. Critical thinking is learning how to think well. It is thinking that meets high standards of quality. Again, there are many ways I can think through something well. I can figure out that one conclusion is more accurate than another. I can see implications more clearly than I saw them before. I can focus on the most important aspects of a problem. I can realize that I've thought through an issue sufficiently, and that now it is time to act. The standards are an attempt to formulate the heart of what constitutes the quality component in critical thinking. Like the elements, the standards are a set of concepts. I think through an issue well when I think it through accurately and clearly, when I focus on what is most important to deciding the issue, when I think it through sufficiently. To learn to reason well is to come to mastery not only of the elements, but also of standards like accuracy, clearness, importance, and sufficiency. Concepts like these are standards of critical thinking. Chapter 4 is devoted to the standards.

The general injunction, then, in Paul's model, is this:

Take any problem, in any area, and think it out using the elements of reasoning and the standards of reasoning.

Developing a greater ability to think in terms of the elements and standards promotes a flexibility that is ideally useful, and maximally transferable, in teaching for critical thinking in subject-matter courses across the curriculum.

In Learning to Think Things Through, both elements and standards are applied to thinking within the discipline. Part of this, in any field, is learning to think the way someone in that discipline thinks. That means being able to think in terms of specific systems that are taught in the discipline (Chapter 5). More than that, it means being able to think in terms of those central concepts and questions that lie at the heart of the discipline. These are described in Chapter 2.

My presentation of Paul's model differs from his in a few important respects. I have added context and alternatives to his eight elements. I have also omitted part of Paul's model. For example, because of space limitations, I have reluctantly omitted discussion of the extremely valuable intellectual traits, such as intellectual courage and intellectual humility. Putting It All Together

A general picture is presented in Chapter 5. It is a picture of the core process of critical thinking, of answering critical-thinking questions in the subject matter. It is tagged by the acronym QEDS. You begin by looking critically at the question being asked (Q). You think it through using the elements (E) and the central concepts and questions of the discipline (D). You assess and revise your thinking using the standards (S).

This core process, common to all areas of thinking, is what makes critical thinking transferable. By internalizing it in your course, students can learn to think more effectively in other courses, in the interconnections between disciplines, and in their lives as related to the disciplines. To the Student

The aim of this book is to help you improve your critical thinking within the subject matter of the courses you are taking. A secondary goal, a byproduct of the first, is to help you improve your ability to think effectively in your life as a whole. The way you use this book is likely to be different from the way you use most books in courses.

First, this isn't a book you can just read through. You can't get better at critical thinking merely by reading about critical thinking—not even if you're a very good reader. You have to do it. You have to take problems or questions the text asks and actually think them out as you work your way through the book. At least some of them: In addition, it helps if you can get feedback on your thinking. You have to do this again and again.

That's because what the book teaches is not a body of information. If the book is successful for you, you will be learning to do something. That requires more than just learning information, more than just learning skills. It is not just about how to think critically—it is about actually thinking critically.

Learning to do something cannot be accomplished just by reading about it. You can't get thinner merely by reading about dieting; your basketball or dancing won't improve merely by hearing about how to dance or shoot free throws. Your writing won't improve merely by learning that you have to consider your audience—you actually have to consider your audience. To improve the way you do something, it takes both instruction (in this case, reading the book, receiving feedback) and practice (doing it).

Second, depending on what your instructor says, you may need to read the book all the way through right near the beginning of the course, including doing the thinking work. That's because the book gives a unified overall model for critical thinking, and you have to see how the parts all fit together. In the model presented in this book, you think in terms of the subject you are studying (Chapter 2), the elements of reasoning (Chapter 3), the standards of reasoning (Chapter 4), and putting it all together (Chapter 5). You need to have a grasp of the whole model to think your way through questions in the discipline. In the end, the book promotes a different way of approaching the world—by thinking your way through it.

In some fields you proceed step-by-step, learning a skill well, and only then going on to the next skill (and hoping you don't forget the first one on the way). Critical thinking is different. A major goal of critical thinking is always to keep the whole in mind as you are working through the parts.

So, with this book, it is better to work all the way through to the end and get the big picture even if there are some glaring gaps in your understanding. (If you ponder it for a while, you'll realize that's the way you learned most complex skilled activities: you don't learn batting well and only then begin to learn catching; you don't learn how to shop for groceries by first getting good at writing down what you need, and only then going on to the skills of selecting a store, comparing prices, etc. Instead, you engage in the whole process from the beginning, gradually filling in gaps and improving.)

Third, Learning to Think Things Through is not a book that you can work through once and then be done with. Instead, you'll have to refer back to it whenever problems arise for you. After working all the way through it the first time, there will be glaring gaps in your understanding of various aspects of critical thinking. When you have trouble with assumptions, for example, you need to reread the section on assumptions in Chapter 3. But also look in the index under "assumptions" for other passages that may help. Do some of the exercises on assumptions, especially those that are starred (*) and have suggested answers in the back of the book. At the end of the course, some parts may still be unclear and confusing. Even if that's so, you can still use the model as a whole. It will still be practical: in the course you are taking, in other courses, and in decisions you have to make in your own life.

Fourth, this is a guide to thinking critically within the discipline you are studying: composition, geology, educational psychology, or business—any field or subject matter. Only a fraction, if any, of the examples in the text and exercises, however, will be from the discipline you are actually studying. It is vitally important that you work your way through them. They have been selected so as to convey critical thinking concepts across the curriculum, to all disciplines.

No technical knowledge is presumed in this book. Except for the discipline you are currently studying, you are not expected to know the specific field being discussed.

Critical thinking transfers. If you consciously learn critical-thinking techniques in one field, you may have those techniques available for another field. By the end you may find that your learning in your other courses becomes faster, more in your control, more lasting, and more beneficial for your life outside school.

Finally, in the end you will have to be the judge of whether using the model here improves your thinking. Certainly it won't be all or nothing. Critical thinking is a matter of degree. At the end of the course you should find yourself more often checking for accuracy, identifying assumptions, drawing relevant conclusions, thinking questions out in terms of the fundamental and powerful concepts of the discipline you are studying.

One way to think about the process is to imagine yourself in the hands of a good coach, a critical-thinking coach. This book is the manual the coach is asking you to follow, and the coach will give you feedback along the way.

Who is the coach? Well, in a way, it is your instructor. On a much deeper level, though, it is the healthy, thinking organism within you. In the end, you are going to accept processes and thinking guidelines only if they work for you. You will have to see them pay off—in your studies, in your grasp of the subject matter, in your understanding of your relations with other people—before you incorporate them into your life. But you first have to give them a chance to see if they do pay off. Acknowledgments

It is a pleasure to express my gratitude to Richard Paul. I told him I would "try on" his model for a year (1991-92). At the end of the year I found that it had transformed not just the way I taught critical thinking, but the way I thought about my life as well. My debt to Richard goes well beyond this book. Every time we meet I look forward to the vivid, focused intellectual conversations I have with him and Linda Elder. He has been my close friend for many years.

I am greatly indebted to any number of thinkers I have worked with and been close to: A. J. A. Broker, Mike Donn, Bill Dorman, Linda Elder, Bob Ennis, Edward Johnson, Ralph Johnson, Ann Kerwin, Marlys Witte; to those who also gave me their time and critical-thinking examples during the writing of this manuscript: Anne Buchanan, Francis Coolidge, Ines Eishen, Jerel Fontenot, Jennifer Reed, Ian Wright; to Jean Von Ah, who gave me help and encouragement at the beginning of this project; and to the students in my critical-thinking classes.

I want to thank the reviewers for their encouraging and invaluable commentary: Jean Chambers, SUNY-Oswego; Paul Grawe, Winona State University; Jim Pollard, Spokane Falls Community College; and Carolyn Vitek, St. Mary's University of Minnesota; and my editor at Prentice Hall: Sande Johnson.

Any inaccuracies or questionable assumptions in this book are my own.

For deep personal support, I want to thank not only Richard Paul, but also Ralph Johnson, Matthew Nosich, Andy McCaffrey, and the members of my I-Group, Spirit Group, and NOMC.

Learning to Think Things Through: A Guide to Critical Thinking Across the Curriculum
By B Gravlee
Although the topics discussed in this book initially seemed a bit convoluted or wordy to me, upon second review it was a worthwhile read. I have found that appreciating the labor and reflection involved in critical thinking is much like acquiring a taste for some strange food or drink you didn't like as a child, but then as one matures so do their tastebuds and expectations. "Learning to Think Things Through" was a good way to break myself into the subject of critical thinking. Again it came across as a bit overstated and even technical at first, but then after re-reading some portions, I found it to be a very good starting place.

Great start!
By Radek
Shortly after I began reading, I got the feeling that this book is intended to either be a text book on its own, or a companion book in some other course. It gives a nice break down and step by step instruction on the basics of critical thinking.

Throughout the book, the author stresses that being a critical thinker is not the same as a fault finding mission. They intend for you to question the thoughts/ideas/arguments put forth by any writer or speaker. After that, investigate what was said/written and then decide for yourself what you believe. There are several exercises in there that concentrate on examining your own belief system. By doing this, it becomes clearer to the individual what they know about their own beliefs vs what they assume about thiers or others beliefs.

Very challenging. Very engaging. Do not read if you don't have the constitution to examine and challenge yourself.

Required, and actually a little interesting
By Kate Benediktsson
This book surprised me by being interesting and actually relevant. It was required for a course I took, but it is a great foundation book. Everyone should understand real critical thinking. The greatest surprise is I thought I did before I read it. Recommended.

A complete waste of money and time
By vb
My assumption (completely erroneous as it turns out) was that a book written for a D800 or D800E user would be directed toward an advanced amateur/pro audience who wanted to fully exploit and understand the strengths (and weaknesses) of this camera. Instead this is a book that covers Photography 101. Does anyone who buys this camera not understand the difference between a wide-angle lens and a telephoto??? Or how about depth of field??? Essentially the author has packaged what is found in a 1000 other elementary photography books and wrapped it around some specifics pertaining to a Nikon D800. Most of the book is so rudimentary that it's a complete waste of time. For those Nikon D800/E users who really want a decent exploration of the features of this camera, pass on this book and buy J. Dennis Thomas' "Nikon D800 & D800E Digital Field Guide".

Disappointing to say the least
By I. H. Ross
Having just bought my D800 I was keen to have some sort of guide as it is quite different to my D7000. I have the Book "Nikon D7000: From Snapshots to Great Shots :written by John Batdorff, which, whilst not the greatest book ever written, I did find useful. However, the D800 book seems to be a regurgitation of the basics, has very little to tell you about the D800 itself and quite frankly covers almost exactly the same stuff. If you had the D7000 plus the D800 manual then writing this book would be a piece of cake. Almost a con. To be fair, if you are new to photography and the D800 is your first Nikon DSLR then OK. However given the price tag on the camera, it's not what I would call an entry model so most users would expect quite a bit more than this book provides.

Too much and too little
By KEVIN ROXBY
Too much time spent on how to make a particular photograph and not nearly enough on Nikon's D800 functionality and unique "ins and outs". Those who invest in a camera at the level of the D800 likely know beyond the camera skills delineated here. I suspect a "cut & paste" from the author's other books.

The medium is the message---and it's a powerful medium
By Jonathan Goldstein
[[VIDEOID:mo16IBEI0JKN23S]]The Sketchnote handbook is a lovely and useful book. Buy it if you want to take poweful notes and have fun doing so. Rohde shows us how to create powerful, personal notes, infused with feeling, and exploding with ideas visualized. I am a professional visual notetaker and design educator, and I am always looking for fresh approaches to this powerful medium. Mike delivers a fun and useful book in that both professionals and novices will appreciate. Mike shows why Sketchnotes work and he shows a variety of approaches to creating them, showcasing sketchnoters from from around the world to underline his points. The book is an easy read, designed to skim or dive deep. Rohde emphasizes that sketchnoting is about capturing ideas, not about showing off virtuoso art chops, and gives useful tips on structure, quick and easy drawing, and penmanship and lettering. Rohde's tone is encouraging as he urges you to start slowly and build on success. Even adding one little drawing to your notes will help you connect to the ideas in a presentation long after its over. If I were to make one suggestion for a modification in a future edition, I'd like Mike to find some clearer examples of one of the structures he describes, the radial structure. The examples he shows, which are nice works in and of themselves, do not show that radial structure it as clearly as I would like (check out Brandy Agerbeck's "Graphic Facilitator's Guide" for some nice examples of radial structure). This in no way takes away from the overall awesomeness of the Sketchnote handbook. A stellar resource worthy of 5 big, glistening stars! Go add it to your library and change the way you take notes.

Useful...and a lot of fun
By Schwerpunkt
Quick take: great book -- well organized, clear instructions, and, of course, good illustrations. Highly recommended.

I didn't know much about sketchnoting before buying this book. I'd gleaned a bit about it from author Mike Rohde's tweets, and from those by another contributor, Veronica Erb, and I was curious to learn more. Along came this book, and I thought I'd give it a shot.

It's a fun read -- Mike Rohde's enthusiasm really shines through. It's also surprisingly well organized, at least compared to what I expected from a book about doodling. Mike does a nice job of explaining the value of sketchnoting, i.e., why it's a useful technique, and then walks you through different kinds of sketchnote patterns and the how-tos.

The book also contains a lot of examples from other sketchnoters; these give you an idea of other peoples' styles, and offer their take on tools and techniques. It might be mildly intimidating to see so many great-looking examples, and wondering, "Will I ever get this good at it, and if not, is it worth trying?" Fortunately, Mike mentions early and often that a) if you can draw *really* simple shapes, then you can sketchnote, and b) it's more about structure than art. I found that reassuring.

I bought the book+video version, and I'm glad I did. The book is fine by itself, i.e., if you just bought the book, I think you'd be ok. But the videos let you see Mike sketchnoting in realtime, and I found that complemented the book very well.

Suggestions for the next edition:

- Recommended equipment: Mike mentions which pen and notebook he uses, and many of the other contributors do so too, but these are scattered throughout the book. Might be worth pulling this together onto a single page, to help us newbies. Do I go with a Moleskine, or one of the spiral-bound notebooks?...

- Other applications/contexts: Mike mentions sketchnoting while attending conferences (IA Summit, anyone?); it would be helpful to mention other applications if relevant.

In conclusion: if you've ever attended a conference and have taken notes, you ought to buy this book. As for me, I've ordered my sketchnoting pens, and am eager to put Mike's book into practice.

Sketch-noting is about capturing ideas, not about art.
By Todd Elliott
First of all, this is a beautiful book, having a matte(?) finish, full of illustrations, using the very medium to 'deconstruct' itself. I even love the accent color (orange) used throughout the book. Loved the guest sketch noters. Don't get the Kindle edition. Appreciate the book in its native format as the author intended.

The videos were okay. I felt they added little value, as the author merely clarified the concepts in his book. Given the passion the author has for sketch-noting, I kinda expected him to burst upon the screen like those guys from the infomercials. He had a business-like demeanor in front of the camera. If there was just one chapter worth watching, I would suggest watching the segment where Mike does a sketch note in real time, listening to Mr. Mueller. Oh- the online videos were not captioned. I would suggest that Peachpit require that future video submissions have subtitling and/or captioning.

I primarily bought this book to give me ideas and techniques that i can share with my students. Then, they can make meaningful connections in studying their subject matter, i.e., Math, Reading, Science, in a visual way. It's also nice to undertake some sketch-noting during those professional development workshops. This book delivers for me, full of little tips I can immediately put to use.

I feel that this book was somewhat superficial. It is indeed a quick read. I would have liked more coverage on Dual-Coding Theory, for instance. Little coverage was given to speaker patterns. What about having a 'listening triage', weeding out white noise and capturing relevant ideas? What if someone in the audience has an insightful idea? A heated debate? I'm not asking for a full blown treatise; just better coverage on listening and capturing ideas quickly and effectively.

Another example; I rely on sign language for communications. In a meeting, I just can't look down and start doodling (or jotting) away. I have to watch, and retain as much as I can before there's a lull in the meeting, then I furiously scribble down my notes. At least, sketching images may be an acceptable substitute in writing notes during lulls as they're quicker to make and i can get back to the presentation at hand. In this book, Mike describes a 'brain cache' area, but doesn't really explore it. I would have liked to acquire better memorization techniques so I can hold ideas until I put them to paper.

Mike Rohde is correct that sketch noting is an invaluable addition to a person's toolset in acquiring, retaining, and making meaningful connections between ideas. Not only Dual Coding Theory helps us understand why we retain and make meaningful connections between ideas in a visual manner, it is also kinesiology, the very act of sketching, that helps tie it all together. Thus, sketch notes have the most value to the person who did the notes; it truly helps him/her retain and understand what was presented at that workshop, meeting, etc. Even sketch noting while digesting a heavy treatise helps an individual better grasp and utilize the ideas being learned.

However, I find an odd disconnect in treating sketch notes for wide distribution via social media. Sketch notes have little utility in communicating ideas to other people who were not present at the meeting, workshop, etc. I've looked at a couple of sketch notes in the wild and really couldn't understand them. I may grasp bits and pieces, but i get the feeling that I had to be there to understand these sketch notes fully. That said, sketch notes have some utility for communicating ideas with people who actually attended the meeting, workshop, etc., but didn't do any sketch-noting.

I may be missing the point, but why would sketch noters share their sketch notes on social media, when they are ill-equipped vehicles in communicating ideas? Is it because they may have some intrinsic artistic merit? Just treat sketch notes as a tool that a person can utilize in capturing and synthesizing ideas in a visual form, and not for any intrinsic artistic value they may have. Overall, a good book.

About the Author
Marge Lial (late) became interested in math at an early age–it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, was affiliated with American River College. An avid reader and traveler, her travel experiences often found their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She was particularly interested in archeology; trips to various digs and ruin sites produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan. We dedicate the new editions of the paperback developmental math series to Marge in honor of her contributions to the field in which she helped thousands of students succeed.

When John Hornsby enrolled as an undergraduate at Louisiana State University, he was uncertain whether he wanted to study mathematics education or journalism. His ultimate decision was to become a teacher, but after twenty-five years of teaching at the high school and university levels and fifteen years of writing mathematics textbooks, both of his goals have been realized. His love for both teaching and for mathematics is evident in his passion for working with students and fellow teachers as well. His specific professional interests are recreational mathematics, mathematics history, and incorporating graphing calculators into the curriculum. John's personal life is busy as he devotes time to his family (wife Gwen, and sons Chris, Jack, and Josh). He has been a rabid baseball fan all of his life. John's other hobbies include numismatics (the study of coins) and record collecting. He loves the music of the 1960s and has an extensive collection of the recorded works of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

A native Midwesterner, Terry McGinnis received her Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education with a concentration in Mathematics from Iowa State University. She has taught elementary and middle school mathematics, and developed and implemented the curriculum used with her students. Terry has been involved in college mathematics publishing for over 20 years, working with a variety of authors on textbooks in developmental mathematics and precalculus. After working behind the scenes on many of the Lial/Hornsby textbooks and supplements for over 10 years, Terry joined Margaret Lial and John Hornsby in 2002 as coauthor of their developmental mathematics series that includes Introductory Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and Introductory and Intermediate Algebra. When not working, Terry enjoys spinning at a local health club, walking, and reading fiction. She is the devoted mother of two sons, Andrew and Tyler.

Getting the Lesson Files with the Kindle Edition
By seniorexec
I haven't finished using the book yet, but I've seen some complaints and problems regarding accessing the required Lesson files on reviews of the Photoshop and Illustrator CS6 books in this series, so I thought I'd give a quick guide:

1. Open the ebook in Kindle for PC.
2. Go to the last or second to last page "Where are the Lesson Files?"
3. Click the Peachpit link provided, a list of the 15 Lesson files in zip format should open in your browser.
4. DO NOT use the download all option. It opens a new window and throws a weird Java error.
5. Use the Download links on the far right side of each lesson to download each item individually.
6. Follow the book's instructions for using the downloaded lesson content.

That's it. Hope that helps.

A Beginners-Only Learning Experience
By Brian M. Stoppee
Since 2005, when we heard of the forthcoming Adobe Master Collection, following the Adobe-Macromedia merger, we've been on a mission to master that collection. We admit to not really feeling as if we have gotten there, yet, and that's why we devote hours every week to learn more.

We've been enamored with After Effects (AE) since 1993 when it's founder, CoSA had it, before it went to Aldus and inevitably Adobe. The learning curve for AE is a bit steep. It's not because it's a difficult app to learn. It's not. If you're already working working in Premiere Pro (Pr) you have many of the basic skills. However, AE is something of the world's largest sweetest onion which has to be unpeeled one layer at a time and some days it feels as if we'll never make it to the center of the thing.

Our primary learning resource is the Classroom in a Book (CIB) series plus Learn by Video also known as Video to Brain or V2B. To that extent, since we have studied both of them for AE CS5, this CIB is a very disappointing book. This CS6 edition is pretty much the same thing as the one for CS5. A few chapters have minor revisions. The only significant difference is that the very valuable chapter on the Roto Brush Tool, which was new for CS5, has been replaced with the new CS6 feature on the 3D Camera Tracker. However, we count 24 other significant features since CS5. We cannot recommend someone spend $38 for a 22 page chapter. Therefore, we have to think of this as a beginner's book and not a source of continuing education for existing users. That's unfortunate.

Nevertheless, for a beginner, this is a great book. After Effects tends to intimidate people not familiar with it. The first chapter guides the newcomer into overcoming concerns about the user interface (UI), as the second one gets you started with a simple project. In around two hours your comfort level with AE should be raised.

The third chapter on animating text is very applicable to the use many people have for AE. Animated type is a popular use for you to get AE creations over to Premiere Pro (Pr).

To some degree, AE is a collection of effects which the user applies to graphics. The size of the effects library is what endears professional users to it. It's also is part of the previously mentioned intimidation factor. Historically, CIB excels in not only teaching Adobe apps, it provides some enjoyable and inspiring sample visuals. This does not disappoint in this one, and the fourth chapter is a good example of that. By the time you have created and adapted some of the lesson's visuals you can feel like you're on your way to not just learning AE but your mind ought to be in gear as to what you can create on your own.

A couple decades ago, whacky music videos had visuals which moved across the screen in bits and pieces. The lessons in chapter five remind us of that. Still, it achieves the goal of mastering more AE features including an audio track.

When you hear the AE term of "Layers" it's easy to think, "I know all of that from Photoshop." (or another Adobe app). Nothing could be further from the truth and chapter six dives even deeper. If you're not familiar with what are known as a "track matte" and "traveling mattes" you will complete this chapter feeling empowered.

Masking in any Adobe app tends to scare prospective users. If you're among them, consider the seventh chapter as the "Get Over It" lesson set. The CIB gently guides you through the masking modes and makes everything feel doable and tosses in a little bit of Roto Brush work.

If you've worked with the Puppet Tool in Photoshop (Ps), the eighth chapter will leave you right at home, as well it should. Ps pretty much adapted that feature set from AE. If the concept is a bit foreign to you, these lessons will dissolve any concerns you may have.

The ninth chapter's name of "Color Correction" only tells a portion of the story. We call it "Doing Photoshop Stuff." You'll recolor and replace a background as well as the expected corrections.

If you're not used to working in 3D with Photoshop and/or Illustrator, chapter ten is going to take a little extra study. Even if you're up to speed on those apps, you're walking down a new street with this one. You'll need to have mastered the tenth chapter before you move onto the eleventh or you're going to feel a bit lost. It's worth noting that the projects for these two chapters are not all that exciting unlike what we're used to in the CIB series. When there are more challenging lessons it's always nice if the project you create is something really cool.

The twelfth chapter, the new one, is about the new 3D Camera Tracker. That feature set is magic in itself. When a clip has motion and you're trying to add a 3D element which coordinates with all the camera elements, you need your creation match that motion. AE now gives you that power. That sounds difficult but this chapter makes it come together and feel very doable.

By the time you get to chapter 13, some of the finer and a bit more complex features are introduced. These are things like the warp stabilizer, moving and resizing track points, the particle simulator, or timewarp effect. We figure just reading that sentence makes you think, "Huh?" It's not all that difficult and the lessons walk you through them with ease.

If you're up to speed on video technologies or you've already exported projects in Premiere Pro or Adobe Media Encoder, you can breeze through the fourteenth chapter. However, if it's all new to you, you'll need to study this one carefully. It goes in a different direction than the rest of the book. However, it's essential.

For reasons we stated earlier in this review, this CIB is not our favorite. It doesn't seem as if as big an effort has been put into this one and we have come to expect excellence from every CIB. We can't say that this one's excellent. Even if we skip the fact that we see this as a must-miss if you follow each edition as new versions are released, we don't want to give it 5 stars but feel beginners might miss out on a much needed learning experience if we downgraded it to 4 stars or less. We give it a 4.5 but the amazon system forces us to rounded it up to 5 stars.
