About the Author

Marge Lial (late) became interested in math at an early age—it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, was affiliated with American River College. An avid reader and traveler, her travel experiences often found their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She was particularly interested in archeology; trips to various digs and ruin sites produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan. We dedicate the new editions of the paperback developmental math series to Marge in honor of her contributions to the field in which she helped thousands of students succeed.

 

When John Hornsby enrolled as an undergraduate at Louisiana State University, he was uncertain whether he wanted to study mathematics education or journalism. His ultimate decision was to become a teacher, but after twenty-five years of teaching at the high school and university levels and fifteen years of writing mathematics textbooks, both of his goals have been realized. His love for both teaching and for mathematics is evident in his passion for working with students and fellow teachers as well. His specific professional interests are recreational mathematics, mathematics history, and incorporating graphing calculators into the curriculum. John's personal life is busy as he devotes time to his family (wife Gwen, and sons Chris, Jack, and Josh). He has been a rabid baseball fan all of his life. John's other hobbies include numismatics (the study of coins) and record collecting. He loves the music of the 1960s and has an extensive collection of the recorded works of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

 

A native Midwesterner, Terry McGinnis received her Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education with a concentration in Mathematics from Iowa State University. She has taught elementary and middle school mathematics, and developed and implemented the curriculum used with her students. Terry has been involved in college mathematics publishing for over 20 years, working with a variety of authors on textbooks in developmental mathematics and precalculus. After working behind the scenes on many of the Lial/Hornsby textbooks and supplements for over 10 years, Terry joined Margaret Lial and John Hornsby in 2002 as coauthor of their developmental mathematics series that includes Introductory Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and Introductory and Intermediate Algebra. When not working, Terry enjoys spinning at a local health club, walking, and reading fiction. She is the devoted mother of two sons, Andrew and Tyler.

 

Diana Hestwood lives in Minnesota and has taught at Metropolitan Community College in Minneapolis for two decades. She has done research on the student brain and is an expert on study skills. She is the author of Lial/Hestwood’s Prealgebra and coauthor of Lial/Salzman/Hestwood’s Basic Math and Lial/Hestwood/Hornsby/McGinnis’s Prealgebra and Introductory Algebra.

 

Stan Salzman is a long time resident of Sacramento, California. Stan has taught at American River College for many years, where he was a member of the business department. He is the author of Business Math and Essential Math, published by Pearson Education, Inc., and is coauthor of Basic Math.

This is a great book (especially the iPad version)

I had not taken math classes for over 20 years. I purchased the iPad version of this book and started it from beginning to end. I must say that the approach the author uses to teach math is intuitive, and plenty of examples are available to allow individuals to solidify the new knowledge they are learning. In fact, I went from almost failing math in high school to getting an "A" in two of the math classes I took in college that were based on this curriculum. This book is HIGHLY recommended!

Practical and Informative - Highly Recommend!

Photography is just a hobby of mine, but I strive to create images just as stunning as professional photographers like John Batdorff. I've had the Nik plug-ins for about a year now, but my understanding and use of them has not been very complete. This book is providing me with a wealth of information for not only how I can more effectively utilize the many capabilities found within Nik plugins, but also how I can improve my workflow and overall photographic approach when working with images.

The book provides practical step-by-step instructions that will get you started in using all of the Nik plug-ins (Dfine, Viveza 2, Color Efex Pro 4, Silver Efex Pro 2, HDR Efex Pro 2, and Sharpner). By registering your book with Peachpit, you are also able to download additional resources in which you can better practice the recommendations made by Batdorff in the book. By being able to apply the effects to the exact same images Batdorff uses in the book, I've gained a much better understanding of the plugins and how they work.

In addition to the easy to follow tutorials, what I'm really appreciating most about the book is the personal insight Batdorff gives the reader about not only using the software, but also how one can better understand the art of photography itself. Learning how to properly approach elements such as noise reduction and sharpening when working with images has been very useful and will no doubt improve the quality and overall satisfaction I feel with the shots I create in the future.

At this point I am about half-way through the book and I already feel much more empowered as a photographer. I think anyone who's looking to improve themselves as a photographer will be greatly served by the contents of this book.

This Book Might Teach You Something

This book represents the cheapest printed solution that might work to replace the missing manual not supplied by the software creator. If you are looking for some basic starting points on how to use the NIK tools this book will be of some value but, in truth, to really understand the major plug-ins the book would have to be much longer. In fact, Color Efex Pro 4, HDR Efex Pro 2 and Silver Efex Pro 2 each might require a book of this length (about 200 pages of pictures and text). For more in depth discussion of these tools try Jason Odell's luminescentphoto web site where he offers more examples in his e-books, each about 200 pages and each about the price of this book. And his books are not printed, so if you want to print them in color the total cost will be much, much higher than this book.

I assume that most who buy this book already have at least one of the NIK software plug-ins. If you do then you probably already know that last September Google bought NIK software, presumably to get their SnapSeed software, an Instagram like competitor. The author mentions this purchase in his introduction, but doesn't seem to have any additional insight as to how this will effect support for the NIK software packages. Hopefully NIK will continue to support these excellent plug-ins but, as some have pointed out elsewhere, NIK has already stopped selling NIK plug-ins for use with Nikon's Capture NX; not a good sign.

I knew that there would be some issues with this book, when the author, on page 2, tells me that my camera's sensor "is made up of thousands of photosensitive pixels". Really. He probably hasn't heard of the mega pixel wars; 8 MP, 12 MP, 16 MP and now even 24 MP or 36 MP are becoming standard on many types of cameras. He is off by a factor of one thousand, which is indeed huge. My cameras are made up of millions of photosensitive pixels. This should have been caught in the editing. But this is a mere quibble; it's the printing that I really object to. It's not that the pictures are too small (maybe they are) but they are printed on a paper that makes it really hard to see the improvements the author has generated. The before and after pictures are not all that different when I believe that they really are that different based on my use of this software. When Scott Kelby's books can show differences I know it's technically possible and when I look in his books I see vivid prints, not like the ones in this book. Oh Well.

The author does offer some suggestions on using this software. Try and visualize what you want before randomly trying presets is certainly a good idea. And if you have some of these software packages, or are thinking of buying them, this book will provide some idea of what to do with them. You might also try out the packages free for a while to see if you like them. But I wish he had emphasized shortcuts more in his illustrations. He does list Viveza keyboard shortcuts on page 46-47, including my favorite: In Windows you can duplicate a control point (U-point technology) by alt-dragging an existing point to a different location, a feature I learned before I read the book.

So in summary, this book contains a well written quick printed summary of the features of the NIK software and can help someone just starting out with these plug-ins. For more in depth discussion, look elsewhere.

If you own NIK software, this book is for you!

I just finished `reading' "PLUG IN with NIK" by John Batdorff. Reading isn't quite the correct word, because with this book, you'll quickly want to be "doing" - that is, following along with its examples and your very own copies of NIK plug-ins (don't worry if you don't have them all yet, this book is great even if you only have one plug-in)! I was able to read the first couple chapters, but then got so excited by all the potential John reveals that I had to put the book down and jump on the computer and try it myself. Originally, I had a paperback copy, but I'd highly recommend downloading the e-reader version. It was very useful in e-reader format, because I could use both hands for the computer and not need to hold the book open. It also addresses many of the issues others have mentioned about the images in the book - they are *DEFINITELY* clearer in the Kindle version.

This book is organized very well, such that each chapter is completely self-contained. That means that if you only own one of the NIK Plug-Ins you won't have to read multiple chapters to get everything you need. You can read just the chapter you need. Lest you think that you wouldn't buy a book for just a single chapter, I can assure you, you'll need the rest of those chapters...someday soon! After seeing John's workflow, and following his easy-to-use examples (with accompanying unedited photo downloads), you'll be buying other NIK tools. I wandered into a few of the chapters for tools I don't have and those tools quickly made my birthday present/father's day list!

Throughout the book, Mr. Batdorff shows you, in an easy, step-by-step manner, how he uses powerful features in the NIK suite to bring about his vision for a particular photograph. The before and after difference in the example photographs is striking! His explanations are clear, and the information he provides unleashes the power of NIK and makes photo editing fun. Further, the book is written for all levels of photographer, so you'll surely find tips and tricks in this book that will make your images POP! whether you're a hobbyist or aspiring Pro. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and have since bought two more NIK tools. Combined with the know-how in this book, Mr. Batdorff and NIK have allowed me to take my hobby of creating stunning photographs to a whole new level.

Best beginning Photoshop book I've ever seen

I probably have a dozen or more books on Photoshop as I have been trying to find the time to learn to use it since about version 3. Every time I see a new book in a bookstore I thumb through it and see a few things that would be helpful for beginners but they always seem to go off on a tangent meant to impress rather than to educate. This book seems to be different in the fact that it picks the subject give you step-by-step explanation of what it does and how to use it. It doesn't go into overly technical explanations but seems to have what I feel is just enough information to clearly tell you what the tool or mode is for and enough examples to firmly set it in your mind. The book is 488 pages and I have to say that the pages are beautifully laid out on very high quality paper and the joy to read. The photographs are all in excellent color and all the screenshots of the various panels are clear, sharp, and look exactly like what you see on the screen. One feature that I did not realize was included when I purchased the book is that you receive an access code which allows you to download the entire book as a PDF file and a dozen or so short videos explaining some of the features and how to use them. If you're new to Photoshop or have been using it for some time and a curious about how to use some of the features you've never tried, this is the book for you. I love this book and would recommend it to anyone.

Excent resource...

... for those who are novices to Adobe Illustrator CS6 or for advanced users moving to the new platform.

This book helps to guide you through the new interface and also present CS6 features in a clear manner.

I normally use Illustrator for converting photographs into line art and also for manipulating engineering drawings for illustrations in technical manuals, but there are a myriad more features that I have yet to touch and this book seems to be a good source to help me touch those features.

Illustrations in the book are in color and are well supported by text. If video is more your thing, the DVD that is contained in the book may suit your fancy.

After reading through other books on Illustrator CS6, I decided that this one suited my needs for having a viable reference when working my way through Illustrator.

This book has been helpful when trying to figure out how to do something in Photoshop. I would definitely buy this publisher's book for other Adobe products.

It is worth noting that this book is not a "read-through" book. It is more of a "go-to" book - for reference purposes. If you are wanting a book that you can sit down and read about Photoshop and the many uses for it, this is not the book for you; however, if you want an in-depth, step-by step instructions on how to use Photoshop, this is the book for you. It offers clear, detailed step-by step instructions.

About the Author
Geoffrey Akst and Sadie Bragg have worked together for many years as professors of mathematics at Borough of Manhattan Community College/City University of New York. They met as graduate students at Teachers College, Columbia University, where they were both working on degrees in the teaching of college mathematics. The emphasis on applications in their texts reflects a concern they share for helping students understand why the topics to be studied are useful. Dr. Akst for years has begun his classes with the payoff question: A- why is this material worth learning? A native New Yorker, he enjoys surfing the Web, listening to good music, and traveling to exciting places. Dr. Bragg, who began her career in math education as a high school geometry teacher, credits her teachers with inspiring her love for mathematics and an appreciation of its utility. A transplanted Virginian, she spends her time with her family and her beautiful granddaughter, Maya.

Math doesnt suck!

Shipping- The shipping came in a timely matter as described in the shipping details before checking out. The Book was well packaged and was not damaged in anyways.

Product- The book itself was as expected. This book was for my basic math for college. I have not done math in many years since highschool. This book was a great refresher on what i had learned back in highschool. I know they go through College books fairly quick and are usually outdated in 2 years or so. Purchasing this product also depends on your college professors requirments. I really dont know anyone who purchases a math book just to have part of their collection. I did well in my class using the book that was a requirement. Good choice by the professor.

Dr. Robert M. About the Author
"William S. Klug" is currently Professor of Biology at The College of New Jersey (formerly Trenton State College) in Ewing, New Jersey. He served as Chairman of the Biology Department for 17 years, a position to which he was first elected in 1974. He received his B.A. degree in Biology from Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana and his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Prior to coming to Trenton State College, he returned to Wabash College as an Assistant Professor, where he first taught genetics as well as general biology and electron microscopy. His research interests have involved ultra-structural and molecular genetic studies of oogenesis in "Drosophila." He has taught the genetics course as well as the senior capstone seminar course in human and molecular genetics to undergraduate Biology majors for each of the last 33 years. He was the recent recipient of the first annual teaching award given at The College of New Jersey as the faculty member who most challenges students to meet high standards.

"Michael R. Cummings" is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and in the Department of Molecular Genetics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has also served on the faculty at Northwestern University and Florida State University. He received his B.A. from St. Mary's College in Winona, Minnesota, and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He has also written textbooks in 'human genetics and general biology for non-majors. His research interests center on the molecular organization and physical mapping of human acrocentric chromosomes. At the undergraduate level, he teaches coursesin Mendelian genetics, human genetics, and general biology for non-majors. He has received numerous teaching awards given by the university and by student organizations.

He has also served on the faculties of Northwestern University and Florida State University. He received his B.A. from St. Mary's College in Winona, Minnesota, and hisM.S. and Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. In addition to this text and its companion volumes, he has also written textbooks in human genetics and general biology for nonmajors. At the undergraduate level, he teaches courses in Mendelian and molecular genetics, human genetics, and general biology, and has received numerous awards for teaching excellence given by university faculty, student organizations and graduating seniors. Charlotte A. Spencer is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Oncology at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She has also served as a faculty member in the Department of Biochemistry at teh University of Alberta. She received her B.Sc. in Microbiology from the University of British Columbia and he Ph.D. in Genetics from teh University of Alberta, followed by postdoctoral training at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington. Her research interests involve the regulation of RNA polymerase II transcription in cancer cells, cells infected with DNA viruses and cells transversing the mitotic phase of the cell cycle. She has taught courses in Biochemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology and Oncology, at both undergraduate and graduate levels. She has contributed Genetics, Technology and Society essays for several editions of Concepts of Genetics and Essentials of Genetics. In addition, she has written booklets in the Prentice-Hall Exploring Biology series, which are aimed at the undergraduate nonmajors level. Michael A. Palladino is AssociateProfessor in the Department of Biology at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey. He received his B.S. degree in Biology from Trenton State College (now known as The College of New Jersey) and his Ph.D. in Anatomy and Cell Biology from the University of Virginia. He directs an active laboratory of undergraduate student researchers studying molecular mechanisms involved in innate immunity of mammalian male reproductive organs and genes involved in oxygen homeostasis and ischemic injury of the testis. He has taught a wide range of courses for both majors and nonmajors and currently teaches genetics, biotechnology, endocrinology, and laboratory in cell and molecular biology. He has received several awards for research and teaching, including the New Investigator Award of the American Society of Andrology, the 2005 Distinguished Teacher Award from Monmouth University, and the 2005 Caring Heart Award from the New Jersey Association for Biomedical Research. He is co-author of the undergraduate textbook Introduction to Biotechnology, Series Editor for the Benjamin Cummings Special Topics in Biology booklet series, and author of the first booklet in the series, Understanding the Human Genome Project.

An okay companion for the 7th edition of Klug's Essential of Genetics; B-23 Reviewed!

The study guide and solutions manual is a hit or miss type of book. It includes the odd number answers but with the even numbers you are stuck guessing if your answer is right or wrong. At my university we used (mastering genetics) and some of the answers on the website contradicted the answers in the book or vice versa. I did not know which is correct and found it very frustrating so I had to go to office hours to find out the correct answer. This edition is out of print, but later editions are available. DO NOT use this manual for the 8th edition of Essential of Genetics by William S. Klug. This book is B-23 reviewed!

Content Review: on the eve of the successes of the Human Genome Project (HGP). The HGP project and Celera Corporation have significantly changed our study and understanding of genetics. I imagine the current editions of this textbook are much changed. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries the men and women (and there were many women in this field) who studied genetics were part mathematicians and part diligent investigators. Indeed, much of the opening chapters of the 3rd edition read like a math text with discussions of probability, combinatorics, logic, and problem solving. Experiments had to be cleverly designed so that the genotypes [DNA] of all gametes can be determined accurately by observing the phenotypes [observable characteristics] of the result offspring. This is necessary because the gametes and their genotypes can never be observed directly.
This was the fact of life that made these heroic genetic scientists a close knit group. Every chapter references the many scientists who made slow progress observing generations of bacteria, and famous model organisms such as c. elegans and d. melanogaster, which were bred to support slow scientific before genotypes could be observed directly.

While the text is packed with excellent science, one 20th century mythology is also well represented. Before the HGP, it was imagined that homo sapiens sapiens (that is you and I) were somehow special and must therefore had to have many more genes than other living things. The chauvinistic consensus was in the neighborhood of 50,000 to 100,000. The HGP has settled on under 25,000, with the higher numbers belonging to plants like grapes and corn.

As I read through the clever and tedious research required to take us from Mendel to HGP, I wonder where the epic novel of trial and discovery is. A 21st century Michener or Uris should tackle this project.

super awesome book for a class, this one and the main book. Plus they send you for free a cd with ppts for all the chapters, which makes much easier class preparation, you do not need to be scanning or re-doing pictures.

About the Author

Ruth E. Heisler is a senior instructor in the Department of Integrative Physiology at the University of Colorado at Boulder where she teaches and coordinates several courses, including Human Anatomy, Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy, and Forensic Biology. Ms. Heisler received her B.S. in Biology from the University of Minnesota, and her M.A. in Biology from the University of Colorado. She has been an instructor at the University of Colorado for 14 years. At the University of Colorado, Ms. Heisler has worked extensively with the Science Education Initiative to improve both the teaching and understanding of scientific material at the undergraduate level. In addition, she has been involved in academic outreach through workshops with the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and the Biological Sciences Initiative. She has been a consultant on projects with the Center for Human Simulation, working with data generated through the Visible Human Project. Additionally, she is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), where she has presented workshops on the use of Practice Anatomy Lab as an assessment tool in the classroom.
Ms. Heisler has been deeply involved in the development of Practice Anatomy Lab for nearly five years, as co-author of versions 2.0 and 3.0.  She has also authored a custom laboratory manual developed for a large, cadaver-based Human Anatomy Lab course. 

In her spare time, Ms. Heisler enjoys spending time in the mountains and traveling with her husband and two young sons.

Nora Hebert currently teaches undergraduate courses in Anatomy and Physiology at Red Rocks Community College near Denver, Colorado. Although most of her students are undergraduates, primarily interested in the allied health professions, Dr. Hebert has also taught graduate-level Human Physiology for the College’s Physician Assistant Program. Dr. Hebert received a Ph.D. in Endocrinology from the University of California at Berkeley. Although her research interests have primarily been in basic science, she became familiar with the research phase of drug development while doing a postdoctoral fellowship in the private sector. It was during this fellowship that Dr. Hebert decided to pursue teaching as a profession. Dr. Hebert is an active faculty member at Red Rocks, serving on the faculty senate, the honors program committee, and the admissions and executive committees for the Physician Assistant Program. She is also part of the College’s Campus Green Initiative. Dr. Hebert has consulted in the development of an interactive virtual knee, known as the Explorable Virtual Human, with the Center for Human Simulation at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. She has also been involved with the Visible Human Dissector program, advising K-12 teachers and postsecondary instructors on how best to implement the Dissector in their classrooms. Dr. Hebert has been deeply involved in the development of Practice Anatomy Lab for nearly five years, as co-author of versions 2.0 and 3.0.  She is also the author of over 60 A&P Flix™ animations covering muscle physiology, neurophysiology, and muscle origins, actions, insertions and innervations.

 

Jett Chinn is an instructor of Human Anatomy in the Science and Technology Division of Cañada College (Redwood City, CA), and also the Life and Earth Sciences Department at the College of Marin (Kentfield, CA). Mr. Chinn has 20 years of experience teaching Human Anatomy at several Bay Area institutions. He has taught Stomatology courses for first-year dental students at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine; undergraduate-level human anatomy courses at San Francisco State University; lower extremity anatomy and general human anatomy lab courses at California College of Podiatric Medicine; and general anatomy lab courses at Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Mr. Chinn’s work in the classroom has inspired students to pursue careers in nursing, physical and occupational therapy, radiology, medicine, dentistry and other health-related fields. Mr. Chinn received a B.A. in general biology from San Francisco State University and a B.F.A. in painting from the California College of Arts and Crafts.

 

Karen M. Krabbenhoft is a senior lecturer in the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. During her 18-year career, Dr. Krabbenhoft’s focus has been on teaching students at all levels of their educational process, including undergraduate, physician assistant and medical students. She has been recognized by the University with several awards, including two Medical Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Awards for the Basic Sciences (1998, 2007), the Dean’s Teaching Award (2000), and the Gender Equity Award (1998). Most recently, Dr Krabbenhoft was selected by the graduating class to receive the Pre-Clinical Teaching Award in 2011.

 

Dr. Krabbenhoft earned her Ph.D. in Anatomy from the University of Wisconsin.  After working as a research specialist, she entered the classroom to teach a wide variety of courses including Histology and Organology, Human Gross Anatomy, Functional Neuroscience, and Medical Pathology.  Dr. Krabbenhoft is always searching for better resources to facilitate students’ learning of human anatomy and has worked with academic publishers as a reviewer and advisor for several textbooks and media products. Outside the University, Dr. Krabbenhoft enjoys spending time with her husband and children at their lake home, photographing her children’s athletic events, and crafting with stained glass.

 

Olga Malakhova is an assistant scholar in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville. Dr. Malakhova began teaching Gross Anatomy and Neuroscience in 1972 at Odessa Medical Institute in Ukraine. She has been teaching first-, second- and fourth-year medical students, as well as several Clinical Residency programs, at the University of Florida for the past 18 years. Dr. Malakhova’s teaching excellence has been recognized by several awards, including six Exemplary Teacher awards from the University of Florida (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010). She was also recognized as a Master Educator by the University’s Medical Education Faculty Development Program (2006). Dr. Malakhova received her M.D. from Odessa Medical Institute in Ukraine, and her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the Brain Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in Moscow. She has published numerous medical research papers, including two books for medical students. Dr. Malakhova is a member of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists (AACA). She is also an active reviewer of the AACA monthly publication. Outside the University, Dr. Malakhova’s hobbies include listening to classical music, reading, enjoying water sports, and traveling with friends and family.
