About the Author

For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student’s perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her publications are known.

Dr. Marieb has partnered with Benjamin Cummings for over 30 years. Her first work was Human Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory Manual (Cat Version), which came out in 1981. In the years since, several other lab manual versions and study guides, as well as the softcover Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology textbook, have hit the campus bookstores. This textbook, now in its Ninth edition, made its appearance in 1989 and is the latest expression of her commitment to the needs of students studying human anatomy and physiology.

Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by funding a staffed drop-in center and by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women who are returning to college after a hiatus or attending college for the first time and who would be unable to continue their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and has underwritten renovation and updating of one of the biology labs in Clapp Laboratory at that college. Dr. Marieb also contributes to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she generously provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory. Recognizing the severe national shortage of nursing faculty, she underwrites the Nursing Scholars of the Future Grant Program at the university.

In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

In January 2012, Florida Gulf Coast University named a new health professions facility “Dr. Elaine Nicpon Marieb Hall.” With the help of Dr. Marieb’s generous donation, this facility contains laboratories in the School of Nursing that simulate an operating room, intensive-care unit, a labor and delivery room, and general medical surgical suites. She has also established a scholarship endowment for non-traditional students in the health professions, and an endowment to enhance the activities of faculty, students, and staff within health professions to support education, research, and community outreach.

Dr. Marieb is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings Interactive Physiology ® CD-ROM series.

When not involved in academic pursuits, Dr. Marieb is a world traveler and has vowed to visit every country on this planet. Shorter term, she serves on the scholarship committee of the Women’s Resources Center and on the board of directors of several charitable institutions in Sarasota County. She is an enthusiastic supporter of the local arts and enjoys a competitive match of doubles tennis.

 

Susan J. Mitchell earned her Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Michigan. She studied the cellular basis of behavior before joining the faculty at Onondaga Community College where she is currently a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. Her research in neurophysiology and training in physiology positioned her to write the original Nervous, Endocrine, and Digestive System modules in the Interactive Physiology 10-System Suite tutorial program. She has been honored with a NISOD Excellence Award for teaching, and been awarded several grants to develop technological resources for biology at OCC. Dr. Mitchell is a member of the American Physiological Society, National Association of Biology Teachers, National Science Teachers Association, and the Human Anatomy and Physiological Society (HAPS), where she is currently active on the Curriculum and Instruction Committee.

 

Lori A. Smith received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California at Davis. Before discovering her passion for teaching, she worked as a research scientist and project leader in the medical diagnostics industry. In 1999, she joined the faculty at American River College in the Biology Department.  Currently she teaches anatomy and physiology and microbiology to pre-nursing and mortuary science students at American River College. Starting in 2005, she began co-authoring Pearson’s PhysioEx: Laboratory Simulations in Physiology and has continued to co-author several versions of the software and lab manual. Dr. Smith has been awarded “Instructor of the Year” by the American River College Associated Students for her commitment to serving students, and she is a member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT).

Book Package came with everything that was needed

I have seen a few comments/questions regarding what is included with this textbook. I am hoping I can clear up some confusion. I just received the "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)". This package came with the Human Anatomy & Physiology textbook, A Brief Atlas of the Human Body, Interactive Physiology 10-System Suite (CD ROM), and the Student Access Code for Mastering A&P. If you need the whole package, this is the one to order. Also, it is important to note that the textbook comes 3-holed punched and you will have to put the pages in a 3-ringed binder. This book does not have a binding. I personally like this idea because if I know that we are going to be working on chapters 2 and 3 in class, then I only have to bring chapters 2 and 3 to class. I don't have to lug around the whole book. Also, it might be important to note that I ordered this book directly from Amazon and not from someone who is using Amazon to sell their book.

If you order the hardcover book, you will only receive the textbook. The hardcover book (at the time of this review) does not come with the Atlas, CD ROM, or the Access Code.

When you read reviews, make sure to look at the review carefully to see exactly which book/package is being reviewed. When you look at the reviews for "Human Anatomy & Physiology" it will show reviews from people who received the hardcover book, the kindle book, and the 3-holed punched book. These reviews are all mixed together. The review will tell you exactly which book/package is being reviewed. Personally I think this makes it very confusing but if you look carefully you will find the information you need.

UPDATE as of 1/30/2013
I have just noticed that Amazon is now selling a loose leaf edition without the full package. When ordering make sure you order "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)" if you need the full package. If it doesn't list "Mastering A&P with eText - Access Card Package" in the title then you are not going to receive the full package. Also, it seems like Amazon is making it more difficult to actually find this full package. If you search for just "Human Anatomy & Physiology", this full package is not going to come up in the search. However, if you copy and paste the full title: "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)", you should be able to find the correct package. I hope you find what you need.

Now that I have started my class that uses this book, I can now comment on using the Loose Leaf version vs a Hardcover book. Overall I do like that I can take a few chapters to class versus taking the whole book. Its much lighter and I enjoy that. The only bad thing I have found about having the loose leaf version is that you have to be more careful with the pages. The whole book is 3 holed punched and needs to be put in a 3 ring binder. When turning the pages, if you aren't careful, you can tear one or two of the holes on a page. It's usually nothing a little tape couldn't correct but if you are the kind of person who is rough on their books, turns pages aggressively, throws their books across the room, then you might want to invest in the hard cover book.

Not much difference between editions

I used the previous (7th) edition and got an "A" in my online Anatomy and Physiology class. From what I could tell, there was no difference between the cheaper 7th edition and the ridiculously priced 8th edition except for the picture on the cover!

I gave the book three stars because it was unclear and lacked details in so many areas that it left me confused. I had to clarify a lot of issues by looking them up online.

I resold my book after I was finished with it for the same amount of money I paid for it so all it cost me was the initial shipping fee.

FYI - I quit buying books at my campus bookstore after the first semester and have saved over $1000.00 so far, just by buying used, previous editions.

The latest ploy these unscrupulous bookstores use is to package up a bunch of useless items with the necessary textbook and sell the "bundle" at an outrageous price. It is criminal.

I always ask the instructors before hand what other materials are required and if I can use the previous edition. 99 percent of the time they tell me the ONLY thing I need is the textbook and the previous edition is OK. Occasionally a professor will insist on the current edition and I still save a ton of money buying it used on Amazon.com. When I am finished, I re-sell them and usually get all my money back!

We need to get the word out about the college bookstore textbook scams! It is an OUTRAGE!

One of my favorite school books (if that's possible)

I can't tell you how sad I was when I found out that the City Colleges of Chicago decided to use Principles of Anatomy and Physiology by Tortora and Derrickson for the second course of Anatomy and Physiology instead of this book. This book does a great job of putting the subjects in an order that is good to follow, with a plethora of great photos and drawings, and puts a section called Homeostatic Imbalance right after a section and explains some problems that go wrong in the part of the human body. Most chapters even have a closer look section with a rather corny title that they think is funny with an article that is usually topical and relevant. Really go above and beyond in muscle and bone chapters (giving you both a detailed drawing and actual picture of almost everything). Also, wrote in a style that is easy to understand; goes from the basics to the details of a subject very smoothly. Even my girlfriend, who has no interest in a career in the medical world, has flipped through most of the book and asked questions or stated how awesome something is. I plan on keeping this book to reference to for a long time.

About the Author

Rebecca Donatelle is a Professor Emeritus in Public Health and was the Coordinator of the Public Health Promotion and Education Programs in the College of Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University. She has a Ph.D. in Community Health/Health Education, a Master of Science degree in Health Education, and a Bachelor of Science degree with majors in both Health/Physical Education and English. She was also a Certified Health Education Specialist in behaviors and behavior change. She has received the Leadership Award, outstanding teacher award in her college, and a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Presidential Award for Promising New Research in the Smoke-Free Families National Initiative.

Great. I actually am currently completing my general education ...

Great. I actually am currently completing my general education requirements for transfer eligibility. I needed the book earlier than the regular january 4-8 shipping date. And the vendor selling this book was extremely accommodating in this request.

The book is o.k. This is Health Science 1. My only pointer would have been to have had a review exam after every chapter. I like the pop quizzes but more questions would have helped also. A lot of general information can be found in this information. So, deciding what's important verses what's not is a little challenging. But overall, it's an o.k. book. Just would have wanted more of an exam review questions after every chapter.

It came in really good condition, though I have not looked into it as much as I probably should have. I only wanted to have a copy of all my class textbooks for furture reference. I am happy to have my copy of this one along with several others and glad its in really good condition.

An amazing book with tons of great health information. Donatelle never talks down to the reader (as some textbook authors tend to do). At the same time, she delivers detailed health and emotional information for the health student. An overall, great book.

Wow! This book goes under the hood and more -- it is filled with tips and tricks. I found the in-depth information of Premiere Pro to be outstanding. The writers' takes the production process into account and show Premiere Pro within the entire Creative Cloud experience. Applications used within the production process are discussed within the workflow of Premiere Pro CC. The real gem is that the book has extensive details about input, output and everything in-between. There is no other book on the market today or in the past that is as comprehensive as "Adobe Premiere Pro Studio Techniques."

I promise, even the seasoned user can learn something new. I would recommend this book to intermediate and experienced editors. It is a real world view of Premiere Pro for the professional user. I found the book to be well written and insightful.

The techniques in this book will make you a better editor! It explains how to set up Premiere Pro to take advantage of it's many features and also explains techniques on how to set up your job folders to streamline your work process.

Dr. Robert M. Sherfield is currently a Professor in the School of Arts and Letters at The College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas, NV.  He is a nationally recognized educator, writer, and speaker having spent the past 26 years working with faculty development, first year student success programs, student motivation, and retention.

Helpful & Convenient Book

Pretty good book. I liked how it has a lot of visuals all throughout and is fairly simple to understand. I used this book for my astronomy class and used it mostly as a review tool. Very helpful supplementary book to the class lecture. I also enjoyed having it in a loose-leaf edition. This way I kept most of the book at home in a big binder and take the chapter I need for class in a small binder. Very convenient.

About the Author
Marvin Bittinger For over thirty years Professor Marvin L. Bittinger has been teaching math at the university level. Since 1968 he has been employed as a professor of mathematics education at Indiana University - Purdue University at Indianapolis. Professor Bittinger has authored 159 publications on topics ranging from Basic Mathematics to Algebra and Trigonometry to Brief Calculus. He received his BA in Mathematics from Manchester College in 1963 and his PhD in Mathematics Education from Purdue University in 1968. Special honors include being Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy and being elected to the Manchester College Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1999. His hobbies include hiking, baseball, golf, and bowling and he enjoys membership in the Professional Bowler's Association and the Society for the Advancement of Baseball Research. Professor Bittinger has also had the privilege of speaking at a recent mathematics convention giving a lecture entitled, Baseball and Mathematics. In addition, he also has an interest in philosophy and theology, in particular, apologetics. Professor Bittinger currently lives in Carmel, Indiana with his wife Elaine. He has two grown and married sons, Lowell and Chris, and three grandchildren. Neal Brand is the Departmental Chair and Professor of Mathematics at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, where he has taught since 1983. Before teaching at UNT, he taught at Ohio State University and Loyola University of Chicago, and he was employed as a scientist at McDonnell-Douglass Corporation. He received his BS in Mathematics from Purdue University in 1974, and his MS and PhD in Mathematics from Stanford Universityin 1976 and 1978 respectively. He has authored or co-authored 26 refereed articles that have appeared in the mathematical literature. Dr. Brand is a member of the Mathematical Association of America and the American Mathematical Society. Outside of mathematics, his interests include woodworking and carpentry. He is a founding board member and current board president of Habitat for Humanity of Denton County. He lives in Denton, Texas with his wife Shari. He also has two grown daughters. John A. Quintanilla is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, where he has taught since 1996. He received both his BS and MS in Mathematics from Stanford University in 1992, and he received his PhD in Civil of Engineering and Operations Research from Princeton University in 1997. He has authored or co-authored 18 refereed articles that have appeared in the scientific literature. Dr. Quintanilla has been the recipient of multiple teaching awards. In 2004, he received the University of North Texas President's Council Teaching Award. In 2005, he was conferred the Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics Award by the Texas Section of the Mathematical Association of America. Dr. Quintanilla is a member of the Mathematical Association of America and the Association of Christians in the Mathematical Sciences. His outside interests include golf, volleyball, softball, and Bible study. He lives in Denton, Texas with his wife Sandra and their daughter Sarah.

Judy Beecher has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Indiana University and a graduate degree in mathematics from Purdue University. She has taught at both the high school and college levels with many years of developmental math and precalculus teaching experience at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis. In addition to her career in textbook publishing, she spends time traveling, enjoying her grandchildren, and promoting charity projects for a children's camp. Judy Penna received her undergraduate degree in mathematics from Kansas State University and her graduate degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois. Since then, she has taught at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis and at Butler University, and continues to focus on writing quality textbooks for undergraduate mathematics students. I bought this product trusting that when it said NEW MATLAB code it would in fact be new. Upon entering the code it daid it had already been used. Really angry at the false advertising.

Awesome! Thank you so much. Arrived in a timely manner and was EXACTLY what I needed for my College Algebra class at college (though I saved some $$ not buying it from the college book store). The code worked... no problems whatsoever. Packaged nicely. The graphing calculator book is semi-helpful (no fault of the seller's)...it's more of a use it or lose it participation thing. Use TI83 with the coordinating loose textbook you'll make your algebra (graphing) life much better. I'm fortunate enough to have a fantastic team of math professors that are very helpful.

About the Author
Allyn Washington was born and educated in Connecticut, where he also began teaching at Trinity College, his alma mater. He taught at Boise Junior College (now Boise State University) before joining the newly forming Dutchess Community College, in Poughkeepsie, New York, where he began writing "Basic Technical Mathematics," At the time, technical mathematics did not have a text that gave students the math they needed to successfully achieve their goals in the technical mathematics program. Al decided to write a book that specifically aligned itself with the technical programs these students were taking. He wanted his text to be flexible, allowing instructors to teach in ways that would most benefit their students. Through his vision and determination, Allyn Washington created the "Technical Mathematics" series. Mario F. Triola is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Dutchess Community College, where he has taught statistics for over 30 years. Marty is the author of "Elementary Statistics, 10th Edition," "Elementary Statistics Using Excel,"" Elementary Statistics Using the TI-83 84 Plus Calculator," and he is a co-author of "Biostatistics for the Biological and Health Sciences,"" Statistical Reasoning for Everyday Life," and "Business Statistics," He has written several manuals and workbooks for technology supporting statistics education. Outside of the classroom, Marty has been a speaker at many conferences and colleges. His consulting work includes the design of casino slot machines and fishing rods, and he has worked with attorneys in determining probabilities in paternity lawsuits, identifying salary inequities based on gender, analyzing disputed election results, analyzingmedical data, and analyzing medical school surveys. Marty has testified as an expert witness in New York State Supreme Court. The Text and Academic Authors Association has awarded Mario F. Triola a "Texty" for Excellence for his work on "Elementary Statistics," Ellena Reda is the Department Head of the Mathematics, Physical and Computer Sciences Department at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, NY. She began her career at DCC in 1988 as an adjunct instructor. Ellena received her Bachelor's degree in Mathematics at Marist College, her Master's degree in Mathematics/Education from the State University of New York at New Paltz, and an advanced graduate certificate in Educational Computing from the University at Stony Brook. She is the program coordinator at DCC for the Verizon Next Step Program, has served as the program's mathematics curriculum leader, and has taught a variety of courses in this technical program. Ellena is a member of the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges. She was a writing team member of the NSF - AMATYC Math Works Project. She was the principal investigator for a National Science Foundation Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics Scholarship (CSEMS) Grant and a team leader/teacher leader for the State Professional Development Collaborative, an NSF/ATE Grant. In spring 2005 she was named a Regional Teacher of the Year by the New York State Technology Education Association. Ellena has co-authored the "Excel Manual" that accompanies "Elementary Statistics," 8th, 9th and 10th editions written by Mario Triola. In her spare time Ellena enjoys golfing, running, and reading. In 2003 she ran her first marathon to raise money for the AmericanStroke Association. Since then she has run 2 marathons and 3 half-marathons. She has three grown children and lives locally with her husband.

Pages are very thin

Received in a couple of days. Pages are very thin. StatLab seems to work well. Book seems well written, fairly easy to understand.

In regards to quality, it's okay. Hard cover textbooks are definitely better though. The MyStatLab worked and was the only thing useful in this buy.
In regards to text, it sucks! this book is terrible at helping understand stats. However, the complain should be directed to our Professors/college and not the book as they were the ones who chose this %#%$. I passed with A but had to use another book to help me out.

I just prefer regular textbooks, rather than the loose pages. I had to purchase a separate notebook in so that the pages would get lost.
