About the Author

Dr. Jim McClave is currently President and CEO of Info Tech, Inc., a statistical consulting and software development firm with an international clientele. He is an Adjunct Professor of Statistics at the University of Florida, where he was a full-time member of the faculty for 20 years.

P. George Benson is the 21st president of the College of Charleston. Prior to his appointment, he was Dean at the University of Georgia’s C. Herman and Mary Virginia Terry College of Business. His research interests include quality management, strategic management, belief formation, and judgmental forecasting. He consults nationally in the areas of applied statistics, quality management, and employment discrimination.

Terry Sincich obtained his PhD in statistics from the University of Florida in 1980. He is an Associate Professor in the Information Systems & Decision Sciences Department at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Dr. Sincich is responsible for teaching basic statistics to all undergraduates in the College of Business, as well as advanced statistics to all business doctoral candidates. He has published articles in such journals as the Journal of the American Statistical Association, International Journal of Forecasting, Academy of Management Journal, and Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory. Dr. Sincich is a co-author of the texts Statistics, A First Course in Statistics, Statistics for Engineering & the Sciences, and A Second Course in Statistics: Regression Analysis.

Effective text for students and anyone wanting to brush up

This is a very readable and useable text for undergraduates, business students, and general readers who want to learn or brush-up on basic statistics. There is a tremendous amount of information in its 1200 pages, but it is well laid out, amply illustrated, with lots of practical work. The answers to the odd numbered questions are provided in the back to aid self-study. There are several appendices that provide important tables and the methods for calculating important statistical formulas. The index is also quite helpful.

I think the book has a good balance of the technical with the practical. It is easy on the eyes and though statistics necessitates the use of a significant amount of math, it is well explained and never overwhelms the reader.

Understandable stats

I haven't had math in years and my math foundation was not that great in the first place. Pursuing my MBA required me to take and understand statistics. This textbook conveys concepts in a clearly understandable manner that helped me grasp the basic workings of mathematical processes. I am happy to say that it was instrumental in helping me to pass the class. That is saying a lot because I am someone who is more of a verbal person and feel that it requires a command of verbal skills to accurately convey mathematical skills to the lay person.

Misleading Information

If you are looking to buy the Kindle edition of this book it does not come with the MyStatLab access code, it is misleading in the description as it says that it MAY NOT be but it DOES NOT come with this. Even though following that, it shows the package to contain Statistics 12th Edition and the access card. It is not a bundle, it is just the book.

About the Author

James M. Rubenstein received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1975. He is Professor of Geography at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, where he teaches urban and human geography, and where he helped develop the new Sustainability co-major in the Institute for the Environment & Sustainability.

In addition to The Cultural Landscape , he is also the author of Pearson’s Contemporary Human Geography , Second Edition and Introduction to Contemporary Geography . He is often invited to give talks and presentations at colleges, high schools, and professional meetings. Rubenstein works as a regional consultant for the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank and he conducts research in the automotive industry. He is often interviewed by the media on automotive and economic issues, and has published three books on the subject: The Changing U.S. Auto Industry: A Geographical Analysis (Routledge); Making and Selling Cars: Innovation and Change in the U.S. Auto Industry (The Johns Hopkins University Press); and Who Really Made Your Car? Restructuring and Geographic Change in the Auto Industry (W.E. Upjohn Institute, with Thomas Klier).

He is a semi-amateur, semi-professional painter, and displays his work at galleries in Maryland and Ohio.

Great for AP Human Geography

Currently I am taking an AP Human Geography class in my high school and this is the book we were assigned to buy. This book has wonderful charts and pictures along with descriptions. This book goes into depth and doesn't only touch the surface. I recomend this book to AP Human Geography teachers and students!

what a wonderful contrast it would be to go into more depth ...

This book is a textbook for AP Human Geography, and as a teacher I have to say that it should be more balanced in its presentation. For example, on the chapter on Population, it compares the population policy of China (the one child policy) to that of India. It refers to China's one child policy as "successful" without mentioning that there are six million MISSING girls in China as a result of this brutal policy. It refers to India's population policy as less successful, when in fact India has a much higher respect for Faith and family. That is very concerning.

My students talked about these slanted views throughout the year, so this bias is noticed. We tried to add to the curriculum with inspriational stories which add so much when studying developing nations. For example, when studying about the World Bank and the IMF, what a wonderful contrast it would be to go into more depth on Grameen Bank, which was founded by a professor from Tennessee who realized that he could free an entire village from economic slavery - with less than a $30 investment. Thus began the success story in empowering villages -and Muhammad Yunus thus created a bank owned by the women of small villages empowering other women. Compare that to the failure rates of the IMF and the World Bank! We need textbooks that inspire with what individuals can do in this world, and to create these textbooks would modify the feeling that too many people have that the problems of the world are so great that only big government can solve them. Better textbooks would be a good place to start.

solid textbook

This text is an easy read for both the eyes and brain due to the font choice and layout. Illustrations and photographs are visually pleasing as well. I am a pseudogeography junkie with a passion for the human experience, development, and social justice issues around the globe. This text worked well in these areas of my learning experience. A social work major is responsible for the content of this review! Well Done, however, a bit on the expensive side.

About the Author
Marvin Bittinger has been teaching math at the university level for more than thirty-eight years. Since 1968, he has been employed at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, and is now professor emeritus of mathematics education. Professor Bittinger has authored over 190 publications on topics ranging from basic mathematics to algebra and trigonometry to applied calculus. He received his BA in mathematics from Manchester College and his PhD in mathematics education from Purdue University. Special honors include Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy and his election to the Manchester College Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1999. Professor Bittinger has also had the privilege of speaking at many mathematics conventions, most recently giving a lecture entitled "Baseball and Mathematics." His hobbies include hiking in Utah, baseball, golf, and bowling. In addition, he also has an interest in philosophy and theology, in particular, apologetics. Professor Bittinger currently lives in Carmel, Indiana, with his wife Elaine. He has two grown and married sons, Lowell and Chris, and four granddaughters. David Ellenbogen has taught math at the college level for nearly 30 years, spending most of that time in the Massachusetts and Vermont community college systems, where he has served on both curriculum and developmental math committees. He has taught at St. Michael's College and The University of Vermont. Professor Ellenbogen has been active in the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC) since 1985, having served on its Developmental Mathematics Committee and as a delegate. He has been a member of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) since 1979. He has authored dozens of texts on topics ranging from prealgebra to calculus and has delivered lectures on the use of language in mathematics. Professor Ellenbogen received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Bates College and his master's degree in community college mathematics education from The University of Massachusetts-Amherst. In his spare time, he enjoys playing piano, biking, hiking, skiing and volunteer work. He currently serves on the boards of the Vermont Sierra Club and the Vermont Bicycle Pedestrian Coalition. He has two sons, Monroe and Zachary. Barbara Johnson has a BS in mathematics from Bob Jones University and a MS in math from Clemson University. She has taught high school and college math for 25 years, and enjoys the challenge of helping each student grow in appreciation for and understanding of mathematics. As a Purdue Master Gardener, she also enjoys helping others learn gardening skills. Believing that the best teacher is always learning, she recently earned a black belt in karate.

Better then hardback

I needed this because I was having a hard time learning new math concepts online. This version is so much cheaper then buying the hardback and still delivered just as I needed. Plus having it in a binder, i could easily print off the pages i wanted to write on and didnt have to ruin my book. I am going to look for my next math book in Al A Carte form.

About the Author

Michael Sullivan, III is a full-time professor of mathematics at Joliet Jr. College. His training is in mathematics, statistics, and economics and he has more than 18 years experience as an instructor. His publications with Pearson cover developmental math, precalculus, and introductory statistics. Most recently, Mike has been highly involved in Course Redesign at Joliet Junior College. His experience in course redesign and writing texts for the college-level math and statistics courses gives him a unique insight into where students are headed after the developmental math track, and what they need to do to be successful. Mike is the father of three children and an avid golfer.

Katherine Struve is a full-time instructor with Columbus State Community College and has more than 30 years experience in the classroom. She is in tune with the challenges of teaching mathematics at a large, urban community college. She has served as the Lead Instructor of Developmental Mathematics and has been involved in the recent course redesign effort at Columbus State.

Janet Mazzarella is a full-time instructor at Southwestern College and has more than 18 years experience teaching a wide range of courses from arithmetic through calculus. She helped develop the self-paced developmental math program and spent two years serving as its director. Along with Mike and Kathy, Janet has also been active in the course redesign initiative at her institution.

About the Author
Nivaldo Tro is Professor of Chemistry at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where he has been a faculty member since 1990. He received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University, for work on developing and using optical techniques to study the adsorption and desorption of molecules to and from surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum. He then went on to the University of California at Berkeley, where he did post-doctoral research on ultra-fast reaction dynamics in solution. Since coming to Westmont, Professor Tro has been awarded grants from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, from Research Corporation, and from the National Science Foundation to study the dynamics of various processes occurring in thin layer films adsorbed on dielectric surfaces. He has been honored as Westmont's outstanding teacher of the year three times and has also received the college's outstanding researcher of the year award. Professor Tro lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, Ann, and their four children, Michael, Ali, Kyle, and Kaden. In his leisure time, Professor Tro enjoys mountain biking, surfing, reading to his children, and being outdoors with his family.

Good learning material (if you're a chemistry student), terrible price

As for the format of the book, I really like it. Maybe it's because I got the instructor's addition (yay), but I really like the exercises throughout the chapters. If I commit myself to doing the exercises after reading, I really feel like I'm absorbing the information. It's pretty easy to read for a chemistry book (although chemistry isn't *terribly* boring like other subjects), but sometimes I find the introduction of new items (e.g. atoms, compounds, ions, etc.) a bit lacking in providing a very concise description of what that item is. I suppose that's what the back of the book is for though.

Other than that, the author does seem to try to weave in some controversial political ideas, but it's not terrible. He relates it to chemistry and makes the topic easier to follow.

2 stars off for the price. This product "Is okay". Even though I got the book for a substantial discount, I still feel as though I was spending a fortune on something that won't benefit myself in the long run (life). I must say, at least I'll have it for two of my classes and not just one.

Not Tro's Best (Or anywhere close)

Easily one of the worst texts I've ever had to read.

Pros: The author is very well informed, and clearly knows the subject matter.

Cons: Incredibly expensive! PLUS most courses require WebAssign and some other materials that top off at around $500 USD at most university bookstores, and not much less even on Amazon. For that price you would expect that the text itself is superior to less expensive texts. You would be wrong. Most of my professors jump around the book (we start in with Nuclear then go to Ch 3-5). This is not usually a problem, but there are concepts that are expected to be known in the latter part of the text that you will not encounter until later in the semester (if at all). The book does assume you know some chemistry basics, and some of the people I tutored haven't had a chemistry class in over 10 years. For an INTRO to chemistry there are many other texts that do a far superior job at a fraction of the cost.

Overall: It's expensive, borderline useless if you aren't fresh out of high school or a chemistry major, and I cannot recommend buying it. If your course requires it, I am sorry. Look for the absolutely cheapest version and go with that, but expect to either need other material to better explain concepts that you're unfamiliar with, or a phenomenal professor who goes over a lot of practice problems.

DOES NOT INCLUDE ACCESS CODE THAT I NEEDED FOR MY COURSE. Had to spend an extra $75 dollars to access my homework, Should have listed in title that its not included, since the textbook with it is $12 more. I would have saved a bunch of money. Very upset.
