About the Author
Jeffrey O. Bennett's academic home is the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he has been teaching on and off since 1983 and from which he received his Ph.D. in Astrophysics in 1987. During this time, he's taught more than 50 college courses in subjects including mathematics, astronomy, physics, environmental science, and science education. He began work on Using and Understanding Mathematics because he is particularly interested in helping students overcome difficulties with mathematics. For similar reasons, he has recently completed a textbook for introductory astronomy (The Cosmic Perspective, with M. Donahue, N. Schneider, and G.M. Voit, Addison Wesley Longman, 1999).

He is also working on several books about mathematics and science for the general public. In addition, he is now working on science books for children. Jeff is perhaps best known for his role in creating the Voyage Scale Model Solar System on the National Mall in Washington, DC (opening October 2001); he proposed the project and worked on the team that developed it as a collaborative effort between the Challenger Center for Space Science Education, the Smithsonian Institution, and NASA.

When not working, he enjoys participating in masters swimming and hiking the trails of Boulder, Colorado, with his family.

William L. Briggs has been on the mathematics faculty at the University of Colorado at Denver for 17 years. He teaches throughout the undergraduate and graduate curriculum with a special interest in teaching mathematical modeling as it applies to problems in biology and medicine. He developed the quantitative reasoning course for liberal arts students at CU-Denver supported by the textbook "Usingand Understanding Mathematics," which he co-authored with Jeff Bennett. He has written two other tutorial monographs, "The Multigrid Tutorial" and "The DFT: An Owner's Manual for the Discrete Fourier Transform,"

He is a University of Colorado President's Teaching Scholar, an Outstanding Teacher awardee of the Rocky Mountain Section of the MAA, and the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship to Ireland. Bill lives with his wife, Julie, his daughter, Katie, and two dogs, Midnight and Seamus, in Boulder, Colorado. He loves to bake bread, as well as run trails and rock climb in the mountains near his home.

Voit is an astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute.

Prime example of how Textbook Companies are literally operated by the devil himself

Before purchasing this, you should be EXTREMELY careful in making sure that the access code actually corresponds to the book you're purchasing it for. There are approximately 8 trillion different editions of "The Cosmic Perspective" in addition to "The ESSENTIAL Cosmic Perspective" and if you're not careful you will get the access code for the wrong one. DO NOT RELY ON THE ISBN NUMBER FOR THIS.

As far as the product itself, the assignments are boring and don't do a good job explaining things to you when you get things wrong. Whoever decided that a slip of paper with a code on it is worth $70 can stick it where the sun don't shine.

Wasn't complete

I thought I was getting the Access Code with it. I had to spend another $92 to access the online class to take it. Then I saw the book was available to print so I am sure I could have printed it for less that $111.00 ( the cost of the book). When I voiced my issue the company only offered to give me a refund, me paying for shipping and a restocking fee,. It was another company who sells for Amazon and I won't be ordering through that company again.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!

This book didn't come with an access code or even a binder. You can rent this book from other places for WAY cheaper or just buy it new for around $150 bucks and get an access code. It will come out cheaper in the end because you will have to pay another $92.00 for an access code if you buy this used one!

Loose leaf and not explanatory

First of all, REALLY? You're going to charge this much money and not put it in a binder? What a rip off. Second, a lot of steps were skipped when trying to work out the problems. I didn't like this book at all. I ended up learning the material from the Mathlab examples to each problem in the homework section. This book was a complete waste of time.

Mario F. Triola is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Dutchess Community College, where he has taught statistics for over 30 years. Marty is the author of Essentials of Statistics, Elementary Statistics Using Excel, Elementary Statistics Using the Graphing Calculator, and he is a co-author of Biostatistics for the Biological and Health Sciences, Statistical Reasoning for Everyday Life and Business Statistics. He has written several manuals and workbooks for technology supporting statistics education. Outside of the classroom, Marty has been a speaker at many conferences and colleges. His consulting work includes the design of casino slot machines and fishing rods, and he has worked with attorneys in determining probabilities in paternity lawsuits, identifying salary inequities based on gender, analyzing disputed election results, analyzing medical data, and analyzing medical school surveys. Marty has testified as an expert witness in New York State Supreme Court. The Text and Academic Authors Association has awarded Mario F. Triola a "Texty" for Excellence for his work on Elementary Statistics.

Review of a teacher (returning to school) and a student (buyer). Relevant to Heads of Department!!

Bad points:

1. Price
2. When this book is used you can't use the Stat Lab a second time. It looks like those guys have FINALLY found a way to get around students using second hand books to save money
3. The fact that you *can* use Stat Lab makes it such that you *do* use it so much that you never really know if you have understood the formulae or learned them by heart.
4. The fact that you do have to learn to use the Stat Lab makes it such that you spend almost as much time learning to use new software as you do new Statistics.
5. The Stat Lab that you can use with this book is only a temporary one. It last for about 6 weeks. Then they want you to pay *another* $90 for access to something that takes so much time to learn. You only find this out when you start getting notifications that "Stat Lab is about to expire."

Good points:

1. The presentation is good and economical. The author does not get into excessive pretty colors.
2. The Stat Lab is nice to use and gives ample problem solving practice.

Verdict (this is directed to heads of department/ chairpersons/ textbook selection committees who are thinking of using this text):

It's a good book, but ultimately, I DON'T recommend it. And this is because you can't use it secondhand, and it's just too expensive. I find no convenient way to purchase StatLab (a second time) for use with this book. It's not like there is so much cutting edge technology in Statistics that you have to pay these prices for it. A $25 book is more than enough for a course in Stats (I am taking this course in the context of Accounting, so I *really* don't need all the gory details). A quick perusal of Amazon.com shows prices in the range of $35-$75 for secondhand books.

Update: This book was going to get 3 stars, but after finding out about the StatLab hoax/ ripoff, it lost the other two stars. ANY book but this one.

Worst stats textbook ever.

This is the most horrible textbook I have ever used for the following reasons: thin pages which tear easily, but you constantly have to cross-reference. Some tables are several pages away in either direction, often impossible to locate - this means a ton of page turning frustration - and rips. Hundreds of questions cross two pages, wherein you have to read the first half of the question and then turn the page to get the rest. (Of course, you also constantly reference the appendices for data-sets, etc.) This means more page turning (and ripping - you can forget trying to resell it unless you've kept it in a glass case). It is very hard to concentrate on working the problems this way. There is a lot of false, made up, and partial "snippet" information, and a lot of "referencing the author" (problems literally reference the author, himself - how obnoxious) which are both extremely annoying and make it hard to concentrate. Also, there are myriad mistakes in the back answer-checking section. This will have you screwed out of finishing your homework because you were trying to get the "right" answer - which might actually be wrong (yes, this happens a lot) if it is found in the back of the book. Most of all, however, this book is awful because of the extremely confusing nature of the writing style. Excess words abound in all of the examples, making it very difficult and confusing to gauge even the most basic concepts. If you are forced to use this book (I don't think any of us actually get a choice) I highly recommend using Youtube to watch instructional videos rather than EVEN LOOKING at the instructional/example sections of this disgusting textbook. It will confuse you before you even know how to approach the problems, then you will have to unlearn what the book spewed so that you can understand concepts. This textbook sets students up to fail.

Excellent Resource- You may want to Buy Loose Leaf with Stat Lab

I had to buy this book for a statistics class I am taking for my masters. Math and statistics overall have not been the strongest courses for me so I was concerned I may have difficulty with the material. The book was very well laid out and there are a series of videos that go along with each section of the book that are offered by Pearson. They are at a separate website.(My Stat Lab which apparently is supposed to be a separately purchased product although my school had the videos available by themselves through Blackboard- So if your school uses Blackboard check with your instructor. This is one thing I loath about Pearson, they charge you 150.00 for a book then want more for stat lab. If you get the e version to begin with through Pearson you only have access to it for so long then it is gone. It also is a pain to read online. I do not recommend using Pearson's online site for the book if you can avoid it, I used it for my economics class and it was a major hassle) If you do want it then I recommend the loose leaf 12th Edition of this book that comes with the stat lab access and ebook which is about another 20-30 dollars. This book is heavy which can make lugging it around a hassle. With the loose leaf at least you can pull the chapters you want to carry around with you more easily.

The hardcover book also comes with a disk that includes stat disk and has all of the tables for the various exercises loaded in the back of the book. (I bought mine new so I don't know if you can be sure you will get it with a used book) I intend on keeping this book for the long term as an excellent resource. Between the stat disk, excel and a decent calculator you can manage all of the formulas and exercises in the book. There are exercises for each section and at the end of each chapter. There are only answers to the odd numbered questions for these exercises in the back of the book. I think there is another booklet with the remaining answers you can buy to give you the even numbered answers but I opted not to buy it at the beginning of the course. (Halfway through the course I am wishing I had so I would have extra questions to practice with).

New book missing information

I am taking a writing class to fulfill my liberal arts requirement. I received this book new and while reading it discovered that some of the pages were not aligned, therefore some of the educational material is missing.

Quick and easy

Rented this for my English class I no problems at all. It was in good condition all the pages were there and I was very pleased with my purchase.
I ended up not needing that class because I already took it. So I returned it about 8 weeks after ordering it. I got money quick! I will definitely use amazon to rent my books for now on.

Decent but not great.

Rented it. In good shape. Written by one of the retired professors at the local community college. Good guy but not a great help. Adjunct professor never even referenced the book. Make sure that you need it before renting/purchasing it.

About the Author

William Briggs has been on the mathematics faculty at the University of Colorado at Denver for twenty-three years. He received his BA in mathematics from the University of Colorado and his MS and PhD in applied mathematics from Harvard University. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses throughout the mathematics curriculum with a special interest in mathematical modeling and differential equations as it applies to problems in the biosciences. He has written a quantitative reasoning textbook, Using and Understanding Mathematics; an undergraduate problem solving book, Ants, Bikes, and Clocks; and two tutorial monographs, The Multigrid Tutorial and The DFT: An Owner’s Manual for the Discrete Fourier Transform. He is the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Vice President for Education, a University of Colorado President’s Teaching Scholar, a recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award of the Rocky Mountain Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), and the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship to Ireland.

Lyle Cochran is a professor of mathematics at Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington. He holds BS degrees in mathematics and mathematics education from Oregon State University and a MS and PhD in mathematics from Washington State University. He has taught a wide variety of undergraduate mathematics courses at Washington State University, Fresno Pacific University, and, since 1995, at Whitworth University. His expertise is in mathematical analysis, and he has a special interest in the integration of technology and mathematics education. He has written technology materials for leading calculus and linear algebra textbooks including the Instructor’s Mathematica Manual for Linear Algebra and Its Applications by David C. Lay and the Mathematica Technology Resource Manual for Thomas’ Calculus. He is a member of the MAA and a former chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Whitworth University.

Bernard Gillett is a Senior Instructor at the University of Colorado at Boulder; his primary focus is undergraduate education. He has taught a wide variety of mathematics courses over a twenty-year career, receiving five teaching awards in that time. Bernard authored a software package for algebra, trigonometry, and precalculus; the Student’s Guide and Solutions Manual and the Instructor’s Guide and Solutions Manual for Using and Understanding Mathematics by Briggs and Bennett; and the Instructor’s Resource Guide and Test Bank for Calculus and Calculus: Early Transcendentals by Briggs, Cochran, and Gillett. Bernard is also an avid rock climber and has published four climbing guides for the mountains in and surrounding Rocky Mountain National Park.
