About the Author
Dr. Gary Rockswold has taught mathematics for 25 years at all levels from seventh grade to graduate school, including junior high and high school students, talented youth, vocational, undergraduate and graduate students, and adult education classes. He graduated with majors in mathematics and physics from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He received his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Iowa State University. He has an interdisciplinary background and has also taught physical science, astronomy, and computer science. Outside of mathematics, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children.

BAD PEDAGOGY TO N-TH POWER

I'm a math instructor at a community college and have been unfortunate to have to use this text for a College Algebra class, 3 semesters in a row. This text is the worst math textbook on Earth!

It introduces "rules" without the necessary logical derivation/explanation so the students are "encouraged" to memorize without thinking. It lacks logical ordering and structure - the examples in each section do not develop logically and gradually from each other but are presented usually in a haphazard order. I have to reorder them for class presentations.

It lacks consistency - the summaries sometimes skip concepts that were covered in a section; the example problems often do not match the difficulty and variations in the homework; some types of problems simply do not appear at all in the Review sections. The lecture slides are often too succinct and insufficient, the videos are organized at the discretion of the presenter trying to compensate for the chaotic presentation in the textbook, the animations were written by 3rd party and are not synchronized with the textbook.

It lacks depth - some variations of particular concept have no sufficient number of problems to train it (example: the need to isolate the absolute value on one side before solving equations or inequalities with it). The problems in the homework are not ordered by conceptual development or difficulty but are just lumped together in chaotic order within broad categories. When I make a homework set, I am forced to rearrange problems A LOT!

I had to write a Study Guide for my students to counteract the chaos this textbook is creating in their heads. In class, I do not use the PowerPoint slides or the videos that come with the textbook because they suffer of the same problems: formality, lack of proof/explanation, lack of logical structure, unrelated in difficulty and variations to the homework. I am forced to simply solve problems from the homework to make sure my students are prepared for it.

The textbook makes my life hard and my student's life miserable. The math departments tend to choose this text fooled by the pretty pictures and the promise to contain "examples from real life". What's the point of these examples if the text fails at basic logical explanation and lacks consistency?

For clear, logical, and consistent algebra textbooks, I highly recommend the ones by Bittinger or Blitzer.

This book is the cat's ass. It was required for my online algebra course. This basically consisted of teaching yourself the material using only the book and then heading to the professor's office hours if you had any problems/questions. So I taught myself college algebra using only this book and I received an A for the course. I haven't used any other college algebra books so I have nothing to compare it to. But this book will definitely lay it all out for you and get you where you need to be. Highest recommendation!

terrible criteria

On the chapter of polynomial division my teacher decided it wouldn't be an issue if everyone just read the book for it. Took me an hour reading and rereading the section, and I still couldn't understand it. I then decided to give up on the book for the chapter and turned to my boyfriend's trigonometry book on the section, and in his book, in a half a page explained it a thousand times better than this book did in three pages. This book isn't good at visually showing how to perform simple tasks or even complex ones, it prefers to speak in paragraphs about the theories. If you already don't have a knack for math or haven't been in school for a while this book will only confuse you and hopefully your teacher can explain it better for you.

Was unable to use, code was not compatible for some reason. It was for the correct class, but I couldn't use it, and because it had been opened I could not return it. It was a waste of money.

About the Author

D. J. Henry is a veteran teacher with over 25 years of community college classroom experience and an acclaimed textbook author. During the course of her teaching career, D.J. Henry has served on several federally funded grants designed to infuse teaching and learning with sound pedagogies and technological supports. D.J. Henry has extensive experience in the standardized testing of literacy competencies. She worked with the State of Florida from 1982 to 2002 as an item writer, rubric writer, and reader for the College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) and the State Developmental Reading and Writing Exit Exam. D.J. Henry also served as a reader for the Florida Teacher Certification Exam (FTCE) for over 15 years.

D.J. Henry has several esteemed publications, including a three-book college reading series with Longman Publishers (The Skilled Reader, The Effective Reader, and The Master Reader). Adopted at over 1,100 institutions nation wide, the series had an immediate and profound impact on the teaching of college reading, and is the most successful launch of a first edition reading series in over two decades. About the Author
TERRY AND GERRY AUDESIRK
grew up in New Jersey, where they met as undergraduates. After marrying in 1970, they moved to California, where Terry earned her doctorate in marine ecology at the University of Southern California and Gerry earned his doctorate in neurobiology at the California Institute of Technology. As postdoctoral students at the University of Washington's marine laboratories, they worked together on the neural bases of behavior, using a marine mollusk as a model system.
They are now emeritus professors of biology at the University of Colorado Denver, where they taught introductory biology and neurobiology from 1982 through 2006. In their research, funded primarily by the National Institutes of Health, they investigated the mechanisms by which neurons are harmed by low levels of environmental pollutants and protected by estrogen.
Terry and Gerry share a deep appreciation of nature and of the outdoors. They enjoy hiking in the Rockies, walking near their home in Steamboat Springs, and attempting to garden at 7,000 feet in the presence of hungry deer and elk. They are long-time members of many conservation organizations. Their daughter, Heather, provides another welcome focus to their lives.
BRUCE E. BYERS
is a midwesterner transplanted to the hills of western Massachusetts, where he is a professor in the biology department at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He's been a member of the faculty at UMass (where he also completed his doctoral degree) since 1993. Bruce teaches introductory biology courses for both nonmajors and majors; he also teaches courses in ornithology and animal behavior.
A lifelong fascination with birds ultimately led Bruce to scientific exploration of avian biology. His current research focuses on the behavioral ecology of birds, especially on the function and evolution of the vocal signals that birds use to communicate. The pursuit of vocalizations often takes Bruce outdoors, where he can be found before dawn, tape recorder in hand, awaiting the first songs of a new day.

About the Author

John Tobey received his BA in mathematics from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois in 1965, his MA in mathematics education from Harvard University in 1966, and his PhD in mathematics education from Boston University in 1980. He has taught in the mathematics department at the United States Military Academy at West Point and served as the Mathematics Department Chairman at North Shore Community College in Danvers, Massachusetts for five years. John has served as the president of the New England Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges. He has received the NISOD award for outstanding teaching from the University of Texas at Austin. John is the author of seven mathematics books published by Pearson Education. John has spoken to many mathematics departments and at many professional meetings throughout the country on the topic of developmental mathematics education and distance learning in mathematics. He lives in Massachusetts.

Jeffrey Slater has been a professor at North Shore Community College for thirty-eight years and received the Teacher of the Year award in 2002. Jeff travels around the country speaking on student retention and is also a consultant to the Federal Government. He lives in Marblehead, Massachusetts with his wife Shelley and his yellow lab Gracie.

Jamie Blair has directed the Mathematics Learning Center at Orange Coast College for the past seventeen years. She designed, developed, and implemented the Center, and as a result of this effort has provided technical expertise related to the particulars of the Math Center to numerous other two-year colleges and at many conferences. In 2007 Jamie was appointed to the Team of Basic Skills Specialist by the California State Academic Senate. She is also currently participating on Title 3 committees on her campus. She specializes in teaching students who have never been successful in mathematics. She is an expert in the area of basic skills in relation to the learning needs of students. She lives in California.

Jennifer Crawford received her BS in mathematics from the University of Minnesota – Duluth in 1995 and her MS in mathematics from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities in 1998. She taught a wide range of courses at North Shore Community College in Danvers, Massachusetts for five years. She currently teaches at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minnesota where her focus is working with developmental math students. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota with her husband, two young children, and black lab.

Got What I Paid For

I am pleased with this order, I knew ordering a used textbook there would be some shelf wear, and there was. Some writing in the book but nothing too distracting or unbearable. Definitely usable and I will be able to sell it back at the end of the semester.
