Disappointing

If you don't know anything about photography, buy this book. It will be very helpful. If you've been shooting for a while, don't bother...there is nothing in here you don't already know. For example, their advice for shooting in bright sunlight is to look for shade, for shooting with back light: use a reflector or flash. The description made this book sound like it would be full of awesome expert techniques for harsh lighting, but its very basic, common sense info. This was a big waste of $15.

pretty basic, but some useful stuff

I'll admit I got some benefit out of this book; there were a few ideas that I hadn't thought of. But I've taken better photos than most of the photos in this book (my opinion). Mostly, I can sum this book up in three sentences:

1. If you're shooting in hard light, get the model in shade or cover them with a diffuser
2. Use clamshell lighting
3. Use an off-camera flash with modifiers and gels to match the light

If you didn't understand any of that, then this book is for you. If right now you're thinking, wtf, that's it!?! Then go and buy "Photographing Shadow and Light"; it will be a much better book for you.

*AVOID* the Kindle Version

Seems to be a great book, but the Kindle version is atrocious. Pictures don't line up with the captions. Pictures related to topics talked about 3 or 4 pages back, so you have to keep flipping back and forth. Very disappointing. I really want to read this book, but it's too painful. I hope they correct this issue. And, as much as I'd consider buying the paperback, it would burn me to have to buy this book twice..

Should be called 'Secure Coding in C'

As a C++ application developer, this book is simply not what I excpected. Most of the security issues surround the use of C API and C-style programming. The C++ parts are skimpy and often presented as safer alternatives.

Still, there is a lot of interesting stuff here. I like that each chapter goes into a lot of detail explaining how things work (stack, heap, file systems, etc) before the security holes are presented. On the other hand the chapter on threads include little more than an explenantion of how threads work and synchronize.

Overall great for C programmers, but not really for those that already embrace the C++ programming style (std::string, RAII/smart ptrs , iostreams, boost thread/filesystem, etc)

Great book for both beginner and advanced coders

This is a great book that should be required reading for anyone interested in learning how to exploit vulnerable code and secure their C and C++ programs. This book covers a variety of topics going in depth on how to exploit vulnerable programs, describing important case studies, and securing code. Seacord provides excellent explanations for how and why C and C++ programs are so easily vulnerable to attack as well as the solutions to these vulnerabilities.

A new C/C++ programmer might find the field of hacking, bug fixes, and computer security to be quite intimidating. Writing code that is secure against security exploits can be quite difficult because of the seemingly unlimited number of ways an attacker can exploit code. Seacord's new book is exceptional because of the thoroughness with which the book covers all topics including security holes, history, and consequences of being attacked.

While reading through this book, one point that surprised me was that even perfectly reasonable code can be easily exploitable code when seen through the eyes of a malicious attacker. Many of these problems occur because of the way in which C is designed, trusting the coder to make the correct decisions in favor of fast performance. Unfortunately, new programers cannot know what the correct decision is unless they have studied the problem of attacking and securing code. This book is great material for anyone who wants to learn how to see code through the eyes of an attacker and also to defend against malicious code. This book should definitely be required reading for anyone interested in securing their C code as well as learning how attackers exploit code.

An excellent text on coding to create "hacker-proof" software...

This is an excellent text offering an overview of all the various ways that programmers leave holes in their software that malicious hackers (Black Hat Hackers) can use to attack software. The simple examples demonstrate how a malicious hacker would write code to attack your system, and infiltrate your systems to gather information for criminal activity or use.

The author includes suggestions and examples of how to avoid programming these types of vulnerabilities into your software projects.

In today's age, more often than not, fixing "bugs" in programs is based on the business model of a Return-On-Investment (ROI). As a result, coding vulnerabilities are often left in place to avoid the expense and time required to track issues, re-code, and test the software.

Unfortunately, after reading this text, I realize that the problems didn't start with the business model, but with how programmers are trained. Beginning students of programming are not made aware of the concerns presented in this text, and how to correct for them until much later, IF at all, in their training.

As a result, students will form bad-habits in their coding paradigm that this text addresses.

This text or similar needs to be a mandate for beginning programmers. I, certainly, wish that my professors and mentors had brought the topics contained in this book to my attention as a beginning student in the field.

This text has a permanent place in my library.

Outdated but useful

As a completely new tool for Adobe, I wanted to start from scratch and learn the ins and outs. This book was already out of date when I used it last month. I couldn't complete one of the exercises because I was unsure of what they were referring to or how to get to that portion of the software (it was the addition of the menu and creating the correct look). This could have been something perhaps I didn't understand but I honestly couldn't find the option on my screen they were showing.

The book itself had a lot of web basics and went over a lot of web standards (page sizes typically used, RGB vs CMYK, jpg format vs gif format and when they are best) which is great if you are just starting out in the web. I felt like it was giving me more of the web foundations than helping with the software. The book itself has several PDFs to go into more detail included on the disc for the basics they talk about during the book.

Overall, the software is very similar to using InDesign as far as editing and moving items. I do feel like I learned a little better how to use Muse but I don't think this would be my first choice if someone asked me where to start with Muse, unless of course they were completely new to web design. It is too bad too because I love the other Classroom in a Books for PS, AI, and ID.

Good as expected for CIAB, but...

The unfortunate aspect about buying a book to learn Adobe Muse is that Muse is in constant flux (and becoming more complex as time goes). Adobe says this is great for Creative Cloud apps because it's always updating with changes, but it's not fine if one is looking for a book to learn all the how-to's. If you're needing to quick learn the basics, Classroom in a Book is a good way to go, however be forewarned that you'll be scratching your head when the application you downloaded has changed somewhat. The pricy book is already outdated, as if paying for the app every month wasn't bad enough.

Decent Software, Bland Instruction

As a college student, I am required to purchase this book for a web design class. Take into mind that I am a coder, not a designer, but I keep an open mind to the design process so that I can utilize my code better.

For those who don't know, Muse is a website design software released by Adobe a couple years ago. Unlike Adobe Dreamweaver, Muse focuses very little on the code and more on the actual design. This makes it an ideal tool for the artist to create websites without knowing one line of code. It sounds like a wonderful idea, but I find it a tad overrated. To use Muse, you need to pay for a monthly subscription. Before going off saying it's pricey, you get the whole Adobe Suite with this subscription at a very affordable rate without having to spend a couple thousand dollars for the software. Not even close.

Now, let's talk about this book. Basically, what we have here is an interactive instruction manual for Adobe Muse. It comes with a CD that has all the files you need to perform the examples. Now, getting started with this book, the instructions are actually straightforward and concise. You are working on only one website and go through the process of building it from the ground up. While the instructions are a tad outdated, you shouldn't have too many problems going through the whole book. It also assumes you have some experience with Photoshop, which you will seldom use. But here is what I consider to be the biggest flaw: the lessons don't stick very well.

What do I mean by that? Well, as you read lesson by lesson, all this books narrows down to is "do this, do that." Sometimes, it explains what the purpose of a certain function is. Sometimes, it doesn't. If you have experience with any Adobe software before, many of the most basic functions (such as selecting an item and placing text) should already be familiar to you. However, this book takes too much time in showing us how to use these tools, as if we have never changed the size and font of text before. In this decade, if you can't even use a word processor, then you have no business in trying to construct a whole website. So, spending a lot of time on this kind of instructions is pointless.

I also find that the instructions are overall poorly organized. They seem to jump place to place, as in "let's put this item in this specific spot, now let's end this sub-chapter and leave it there to edit it later." Just as when you think you're going to get some focus on a certain function, it goes to a new concept. It's very annoying and it only makes it harder to absorb the material.

And this book offers little to no explanation on the design choices. Since Adobe Muse is a design-based software, it's fair to expect the web designer to explain why he/she chose to put a certain item in a certain spot and why he/she decided to go with this website's whole look. The example website in the book isn't even bad, but I just wanted to know why it went with its current look so that it gives me a better understanding on why using Adobe Muse can be better than learning code. This is probably what I looked forward to the most in this book, but I feel like I wasted my time.

Another gripe I have is the end of the book. First off, it urges you to purchase a hosting plan with Adobe to publish the example website. Some of the objects placed in Muse (such as forms) will stop working if you DON'T use the Adobe Business Catalyst hosting. So if you're a heavy user of Muse, you have to pay both the Adobe Suite subscription and the hosting. We're not even counting the future publications of this book here. I skipped this part and just went straight to exporting the website as HTML. You can use this option to host your website on a third-party host, but don't expect everything to work. And finally, the book doesn't even finish the example website you've been working on since Chapter 2. If you're going to have us start something, at least let us finish it so that we can tell ourselves, "I just completed a whole website!" Instead, it just comes to a stop and there are at least a couple of empty pages that we never get to work on.

So my analysis is that the software is okay. It's like Adobe InDesign, but with an emphasis on the design of a website. However, this book fails to give me any reason why I should keep using Muse, especially after learning that you need to use the Adobe Business Catalyst hosting plans to utilize its current full capabilities. The instructions are simple to follow, but that is all you will find here. It's only an instruction manual, and not necessarily a good one.

So if you want to go into web development, I recommend learning the languages HTML and CSS instead. They are not as difficult as some people made them out to be and it benefits you more on both the analytical and creative sides of thinking.

About the Author

Dr. Michael D. Johnson earned his B.S. degree in Zoology from Washington State University and then moved East to earn a Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Michigan. After completing a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at Harvard Medical School he joined the faculty of West Virginia University, where he remained for most of his career.

From 2001 to 2006 Dr. Johnson resided in the Sultanate of Oman, where he served as Founding Dean of a new medical school being built in academic partnership with West Virginia University. Following a brief period back home at West Virginia University, in 2008 he moved to Qatar to take the position of Associate Dean for Premedical Education at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar. He returned to the United States in 2011 to concentrate on writing and on researching topics of interest in Human Biology.

Dr. Johnson received several teaching awards during his career, including the West Virginia University Foundation Outstanding Teacher award and the Distinguished Teacher Award of the School of Medicine. He is a member of the American Physiological Society, the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society, the National Association of Biology Teachers, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Expensive

Like almost all textbooks it is extremely overpriced. Buy the 6th edition and save the money, didn't use the extra CD info "required" for the course. Didn't even open it. Almost no difference between the 6th edition that I could see.

absolutely NO need for this exporbitant price

why is a very basic human biology book SO expensive?!?!?! really $160...because it is required for some basic college courses and for some reason it has become acceptable to rip off college students. shame on m johnson and his publishers.

About the Author
Frank Madden is SUNY Distinguished Professor and Chair of the English Department at SUNY Westchester Community College where he also holds the Carol Russett Endowed Chair for English. He has a Ph.D. from NYU, has taught in graduate programs at CCNY, Iona College, and the New School for Social Reserach, and in 1998 was Chair of the NCTE College Section Institute on the Teaching of Literature. He is a recipient of the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching, the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship, the Foundation for Westchester Community College Award for Excellence in Scholarship, and the Phi Delta Kappan Educator of the Year Award from Iona College. He was awarded the 2003 Neil Ann Pickett Service Award, granted by the NCTE to an outstanding college teacher whose vision and voice have had a major impact, and who exemplifies such outstanding personal qualities as creativity, sensitivity, and leadership. He has been Chair of the College Section of the NCTE and Chair of TYCA, and served on the Executive Committee of the NCTE, the CCCC, the MLA ad hoc Committee on Teaching, and as NCTE delegate to the American Council of Learned Societies. His articles, chapters, and commentary about the teaching of literature have appeared in a variety of books and journals, including College English, PMLA, College Literature, English Journal, Computers and Composition, Computers and the Humanities, and the ADE Bulletin.
