About the Author

David Griffiths received his BA and PhD from Harvard University. He held post-doctoral positions at the University of Utah and the University of Massachusetts (Amherst), and taught at Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, and Trinity College (Hartford) before joining the faculty at Reed College, where he has taught for over 30 years. In 2001-2002 he was visiting Professor of Physics at the Five Colleges (UMass, Amherst, Mount Holyoke, Smith, and Hampshire), and in the spring of 2007 he taught electrodynamics at Stanford.

Griffiths is a Consulting Editor of The American Journal of Physics, and a Fellow of the American Physical Society. In 1997 he was awarded the Millikan Medal by the American Association of Physics Teachers. He has spent sabbaticals at SLAC, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, and UC Berkeley. Although his PhD was in elementary particle theory, his recent research is in electrodynamics and quantum mechanics. He is the author of forty-five papers and three books: Introduction to Electrodynamics (Fourth Edition, Prentice Hall, 2013), Introduction to Elementary Particles (Second Edition, Wiley-VCH, 2008), and Introduction to Quantum Mechanics (Second Edition, Prentice Hall, 2005).

Difference in Editions: 4th vs 3rd

Looks like this edition has been refreshed. So far the price is ~$13 cheaper than the previous edition. Here's a list of changes: [...]

*Edits to the entire text have clarified arguments and eliminated ambiguities.
*New problems and new worked examples appear throughout, while selected unsuccessful ones have been eliminated.
*All 450 figures have been reviewed for accuracy and updated where necessary.
*A new section on magnetic work helps to eliminate teachers' misconception that magnetic forces do not work. The new section fully explores the actual mechanism in cases where magnetic forces are actually working.
*Erroneous passages have been corrected. In particular, misleading copy (specifically the treatment of "hidden momentum") has been fixed.
*Citations of recent literature appear throughout for those who wish to pursue a particular topic in greater depth. This literature helps reinforce the point that electrodynamics is a vibrant and dynamic field, even after 150 years.

The book is easy to follow, it presents the subject matter in a well formatted fashion.

Good intermediate level book

I am reading this alongside the text by Ohanian and this is a bit lower level. The explanations of how to do problems are much better but Ohanian is far superior at explaining what is going on physically and mathematically. This book is good to have because Ohanian uses CGS units so if I have a need for an equation in MKS I can pull it out of this book already having understood the material I learned in Ohanian. I would say use both in tandem.

Great text, terrible binding

*UPDATE* I am continuing to use the book in winter term for the second term of E&M. Lots of pages have now fallen out and you can see the notches on each page in most parts of the book. Terrible, terrible, terrible. Awful quality. Buy the paperback version at least--though I have seen pages coming out on that one too. Better yet, buy the e book. unfortunately I like having a physical book...

The content is good, and fairly well organized. I didn't ever struggle to learn from the text and use lecture as supplement.

But as others have said, the physicality of the book is terrible. I have the standard hardcover version and have only been using it since late September (it's December now). The spine crackles incessantly and loudly when the book is moved about, and the glue seems to weakly hold the pages--a huge section in chapter 4 of my text is falling out and one page is fully detached already. It wasn't like this at the start of the term, so I think carrying the book in my backpack caused damage.

If you buy the hardcover, don't carry the book around. Just download a copy from the internet and keep that on your phone or tablet or whatever. If you need to buy this book for a class (let's face it, who doesn't?), buy the paperback version if you can.

About the Author
Reece has an A.B. in Biology from Harvard University, an M.S. in Microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in Bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. She taught biology at Middlesex County College and Queensborough Community College.

Michael L. Cain taught introductory biology and a broad range of other biology courses at New Mexico State University and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for thirteen years. He is now writing full time and is affiliated with Bowdoin College in Maine. Dr. Cain has published dozens of scientific articles on topics such as genetic variation in plants, insect foraging behavior, long-distance seed dispersal, and factors that promote speciation in crickets. Dr. Cain is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, and awards, including the Pew Charitable Trust Teacher-Scholar Fellowship and research grants from the National Science Foundation.

Robert Jackson is a retired member of the faculty of the Information Systems Department at Brigham Young University. He has researched, published, and taught in the areas of object-oriented systems development, e-commerce, Web systems, project management, and information systems education. Bringing a wealth of real-world business experience and technical expertise to this book, Dr. Jackson is currently self-employed as a principal in several new e-commerce ventures, where he practices firsthand the analysis, design, and business principles presented in the Seventh Edition. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Brigham Young University.

Complete and utter waste of money if you are using this for homeschooling ...

Complete and utter waste of money if you are using this for homeschooling or any setting outside a class that requires this "Mastering Biology". None of the tools in the eText are interactive, despite it being listed in the Campbell Biology book as interactive (you have to be assigned a study question for it to be actually interactive). The additional study areas are also not very useful so all you really get with this is an electronic version of the textbook, and you don't even get that unless you are actually online. It is not a PDF copy of the book, not that I wanted or expected that feature. In summary, rather useless for anyone outside a university setting.

About the Author
Joe Conway is the senior iOS instructor at Big Nerd Ranch and has been consulting on the iOS platform since its creation. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin, he has been writing Objective-C and Cocoa code since the dawn of OS X. Joe wrote the materials for the exceptionally popular Big Nerd Ranch iOS Bootcamp course, on which this book is based.

Aaron Hillegass, a former employee of NeXT and Apple, has nearly two decades experience programming and teaching Objective-C, Cocoa, and more recently, iOS. In 2001, Aaron founded Big Nerd Ranch and began developing intensive courses that teach programming in a focused, distraction-free environment. Lost in iOS? GET THIS BOOK.

**Before Buying**
Learn Objective-C, or another C-derived language. Seriously. Do it. Knowing Ruby or JavaScript or another web technology won't do; YOU MUST LEARN OBJECTIVE-C. If you don't know Objective-C, start with Big Nerd Ranch's other book: Objective-C Programming: The Big Nerd Ranch Guide (Big Nerd Ranch Guides) (also on Amazon and also amazing). Once you know Objective-C, come back and buy this book. It's incredible.

**General Info**
I tried to use several iOS educational materials all over the web - paid and free - and I struggled with them all. They either assumed too much, or were just poorly structured for actual learning. Wandering around in code does NOT make a good learning experience.

So what sets Big Nerd Ranch's book apart? The authors are trainers/teachers by trade, and it shows - the structure of this book made learning easy, enjoyable, POSSIBLE. They aren't just wading through code and expecting you to get it; they outline what they are doing, and why, then show you the syntax, then fill in the gaps, then roll over it all with a fresh coat of learning paint. And in the end it's beautiful.

The authors also set up a discussion forum for the book and its Challenges on their website, which was a very handy resource. There, you can talk with people who are reading the book at the same time you are! compare answers, etc.

**Length**
To give you an idea of the scope of this book, it took me roughly 120 hours to complete (roughly 2.5 weeks working on it full time). I'm not sure if this is typical, or slow, or fast. But it's a 550-page beast. A beautiful, beautiful beast.

**Results**
When I started this book I had basically 0 programming background. I knew some Ruby, and can put together a very basic website using Rails. None of that mattered, though; none of that helped me here.

But by the end of this book, I felt like a true (albeit novice) iOS Programmer. I feel that way because of two things:

(1) After reading this book, I can download almost any App from the App Store and explain how it could be built. And then build something just like it.

(2) A good friend of mine has been an iOS developer for 2 years now, and after reading this book he and I can have conversations - REAL conversations - where we trade best practices and so on. Make no mistake, for him the syntax is automatic whereas for me I still have to think about it. He's been through TONS of real App creation, whereas I'm mostly practiced in the fundamentals. But he's not bored!

Imagine having a conversation with Stephen Hawking where he doesn't find you boring. Sure, he's 100x smarter than you, but you can hang with the man! That is how I feel about other iOS developers now, and it feels GOOD.

**Conclusion**
Do all the challenges. Get lost in them and frustrated and use the forums. Get familiar with StackOverflow.com. But start by learning Objective-C and then getting this book.

Highly recommended. 5-star. If you've always wanted to bring to life the things in your head, this book might be a life changer.

Just right.

I'm a rusty old developer who decided to get his hands dirty again. I had previously tried the O'Reilly "Programming iOS 4" book and found it really wanting. I could never get into a good groove -- I didn't like the examples/samples, the way the concepts were being introduced wasn't intuitive. The book just wasn't for me. A few months later, I decided to try again. Since iOS 5 was out, I needed a new book. I saw a number of positive reviews for the BNR book and decided to give it a try. I immediately enjoyed the book and found myself much more engaged. The pace is good, the examples are interesting and they do a great job of introducing key concepts. I really appreciate the fact that in a short amount of time, not only am I learning more about the iOS foundation, but I'm also exploring the use of key features, like location and maps. Even though I used to write a lot of code, I don't feel this book is too dumbed down. I really feel this book has accelerated my learning curve of iOS.

Much Clearer than 2nd Edition

I found this edition of the book to be a little simpler to understand than the second edition. It may be due to the fact that Apple now supports ARC and the authors don't have to worry about explaining it. But overall, I think they really went back and tried to explain things in the clearest ways possible and at least through the first five chapters, everything has been making a lot of sense. It is hard for people not very familiar with programming (like myself) to grasp some of the concepts like delegation but I found that reading through the chapters slowly and working through examples is building a solid foundation. I would highly recommend using this book to start iOS development.

About the Author
Marvin Bittinger For over thirty-eight years, Professor Marvin L. Bittinger has been teaching math at the university level. Since 1968, he has been employed at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis, and is now professor emeritus of mathematics education. Professor Bittinger has authored over 190 publications on topics ranging from basic mathematics to algebra and trigonometry to applied calculus. He received his BA in mathematics from Manchester College and his PhD in mathematics education from Purdue University. Special honors include Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy and his election to the Manchester College Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1999. His hobbies include hiking in Utah, baseball, golf, and bowling. Professor Bittinger has also had the privilege of speaking at many mathematics conventions, most recently giving a lecture entitled "Baseball and Mathematics." In addition, he also has an interest in philosophy and theology, in particular, apologetics. Professor Bittinger currently lives in Carmel, Indiana with his wife Elaine. He has two grown and married sons, Lowell and Chris, and four granddaughters. David Ellenbogen David Ellenbogen has taught math at the college level for twenty-two years, spending most of that time in the Massachusetts and Vermont community college systems, where he has served on both curriculum and developmental math committees. He has also taught at St. Michael's College and The University of Vermont. Professor Ellenbogen has been active in the Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges since 1985, having served on its Developmental Mathematics Committee and as a delegate, and has been a member ofthe Mathematical Association of America since 1979. He has authored dozens of publications on topics ranging from prealgebra to calculus and has delivered lectures at numerous conferences on the use of language in mathematics. Professor Ellenbogen received his BA in mathematics from Bates College and his MA in community college mathematics education from The University of Massachusetts at Amherst. A co-founder of the Colchester Vermont Recycling Program, Professor Ellenbogen has a deep love for the environment and the outdoors, especially in his home state of Vermont. In his spare time, he enjoys playing keyboard in the band Soularium, volunteering as a community mentor, hiking, biking, and skiing. He has two sons, Monroe and Zack.

About the Author

Michael Sullivan, III is a full-time professor of mathematics at Joliet Jr. College. His training is in mathematics, statistics, and economics and he has more than 18 years experience as an instructor. His publications with Pearson cover developmental math, precalculus, and introductory statistics. Most recently, Mike has been highly involved in Course Redesign at Joliet Junior College. His experience in course redesign and writing texts for the college-level math and statistics courses gives him a unique insight into where students are headed after the developmental math track, and what they need to do to be successful. Mike is the father of three children and an avid golfer.

Katherine Struve is a full-time instructor with Columbus State Community College and has more than 30 years experience in the classroom. She is in tune with the challenges of teaching mathematics at a large, urban community college. She has served as the Lead Instructor of Developmental Mathematics and has been involved in the recent course redesign effort at Columbus State.

Janet Mazzarella is a full-time instructor at Southwestern College and has more than 18 years experience teaching a wide range of courses from arithmetic through calculus. She helped develop the self-paced developmental math program and spent two years serving as its director. Along with Mike and Kathy, Janet has also been active in the course redesign initiative at her institution.

Do not buy books from Jingleheimerjunction

This book is giving me trouble, I actually need it and I get sent an instructor's copy from Jingleheimerjunction, I did not order an instructor's edition I obviously ordered a normal copy. The instructor's copy is not resellable and yet this person had the balls to send it to me.
Do not buy any books from Jingleheimerjunction.

I am renting this textbook for a class, but realized after the fact that I don't actually need it as my instructor does my math lab which also has the book as an e-text. Still nice to have a solid heavy textbook in case I don't have internet access for some reason.

Save a little $$

I highly recommend to buy used books from amazon.com. I got the right material and even though it was used the book was in perfect shape inside and with all pages and wasn't answered either. You might not save a lot in only one book but if you buy more than two books at amazon you can save at least 35 dollars. That works for me!
