About the Author
Carl T. Dahlman earned degrees in sociology, music, and urban affairs before receiving his Ph.D. in geography from the University of Kentucky in 2001. He is the Director of the International Studies Program at Miami University, where his teaching focuses on political geography, migration and mobility, and globalization. His current research includes the role of European integration in the geopolitics of Southeastern Europe, and he has published a book on the subject, Bosnia Remade: Ethnic Cleansing and Its Reversal (Oxford University Press, with Gearóid Ó Tuathail). He is a co-author of Pearson’s Introduction to Contemporary Geography, with James M. Rubenstein and William H. Renwick. He enjoys photography and hunting for fossils with his son.

William H. Renwick earned a B.A. from Rhode Island College in 1973 and a Ph.D. in geography from Clark University in 1979. He has taught at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Rutgers University, and is currently Associate Professor of Geography at Miami University. A physical geographer with interests in geomorphology and environmental issues, his research focuses on impacts of land-use change on rivers and lakes, particularly in agricultural landscapes in the Midwest. He is a co-author of Pearson’s Introduction to Contemporary Geography, with James M. Rubenstein and Carl T. Dahlman. When time permits, he studies these environments from the seat of a wooden canoeboat. He is a co-author of Pearson’s Introduction to Contemporary Geography, with James M. Rubenstein and Carl T. Dahlman.

A Good Textbook

This is a good textbook for an introduction to geography course. It is a thematic or systematic approach rather than a regional approach to the subject. It has good supporting materials for students, although Mastering Geography is not included in the cost of the text. It has excellent pictures for helping to make points and some good charts and diagrams. The paper is of slick quality and does give off glare when reading. It has some helpful materials that you can avail yourself of using your cell phone and scanning the code, although I am not sure how much a student would use this feature. The writing seems a little stiff and the text seems perhaps too factual and less student involving. Students may have more of a tendency to hunt and skip rather than fully read the text, or at least that is my impression. The end of chapter review is good. A somewhat unique alternative to look at is Introduction to Contemporary Geography by the same publisher. It offers some different possibilities.

Intro to Geography by Dahlman and Renwick is an excellent, current (late 2013) geography for college text/reference book. The visuals are beautifully reproduced and it is well-structured for learning.

I received this book in a really bad condition. It was missing the first section of the first chapter that I had to borrow someone's book to check my answers. Besides that, all the pages came apart every time I touched one. It made my life harder as I had to glue the pages in so I won't lose them.

I don't even know where to begin to use this book. It is not helpful as I am struggling with this class. There is no solution manual to help me learn the problems either. We are not using it in class but my professor suggested we could work for practice. It may be useful as a fire starter.

About the Author

Marge Lial has always been interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself has inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, is now affiliated with American River College. Marge is an avid reader and traveler. Her travel experiences often find their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She is particularly interested in archeology. Trips to various digs and ruin sites have produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan.

When John Hornsby enrolled as an undergraduate at Louisiana State University, he was uncertain whether he wanted to study mathematics education or journalism. His ultimate decision was to become a teacher, but after twenty-five years of teaching at the high school and university levels and fifteen years of writing mathematics textbooks, both of his goals have been realized. His love for both teaching and for mathematics is evident in his passion for working with students and fellow teachers as well. His specific professional interests are recreational mathematics, mathematics history, and incorporating graphing calculators into the curriculum. John's personal life is busy as he devotes time to his family (wife Gwen, and sons Chris, Jack, and Josh). He has been a rabid baseball fan all of his life. John's other hobbies include numismatics (the study of coins) and record collecting. He loves the music of the 1960s and has an extensive collection of the recorded works of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

David Schneider has taught mathematics at universities for over 34 years and has authored 36 books. He has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Oberlin College and a PhD in mathematics from MIT. During most of his professional career, he was on the faculty of the University of Maryland--College Park. His hobbies include travel, dancing, bicycling, and hiking.

Callie Daniels has always had a passion for learning mathematics and brings that passion into the classroom with her students. She attended the University of the Ozarks on an athletic scholarship, playing both basketball and tennis. While there, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Mathematics Education as well as the NAIA Academic All-American Award. She has two master’s degrees: one in Applied Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Missouri-Rolla, the second in Adult Education from the University of Missouri- St. Louis. Her hobbies include watching her sons play sports, riding horses, fishing, shooting photographs, and playing guitar. Her professional interests include improving success in the community college mathematics sequence, using technology to enhance students’ understanding of mathematics, and creating materials that support classroom teaching and student understanding.

It's not bad, but I'm a bit aggrivated with shipping

I didn't read that it was a "binder edition" it would have been nice for that to be in the title/description instead of loose leaf. It may sound less professional but sometimes things need to be blatantly put. Then when I got to the shipping selection I was disappointed to see that I couldn't select anything that would have been faster then standard 2-3 weeks. So I had to wait, I would have paid extra for faster shipping. Then it took forever to come. It said it could 3-4 weeks to get to my house and usually something gets here a week early but this arrived on the VERY last day of the 4th week. Then it took 3 days for it to even be processed and shipped when I purchased it. I'm very disappointed with that. Otherwise the book is in great condition, I'm actually convinced its brand new, good seller, just make sure you're not in any hurry to receive the book like I was because speed is not a concern here.

Marvin Bittinger For over thirty-eight years, Professor Marvin L. Bittinger has been teaching math at the university level. Since 1968, he has been employed at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis, and is now professor emeritus of mathematics education. Professor Bittinger has authored over 190 publications on topics ranging from basic mathematics to algebra and trigonometry to applied calculus. He received his BA in mathematics from Manchester College and his PhD in mathematics education from Purdue University. Special honors include Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy and his election to the Manchester College Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1999. His hobbies include hiking in Utah, baseball, golf, and bowling. Professor Bittinger has also had the privilege of speaking at many mathematics conventions, most recently giving a lecture entitled "Baseball and Mathematics." In addition, he also has an interest in philosophy and theology, in particular, apologetics. Professor Bittinger currently lives in Carmel, Indiana with his wife Elaine. He has two grown and married sons, Lowell and Chris, and four granddaughters. David Ellenbogen David Ellenbogen has taught math at the college level for twenty-two years, spending most of that time in the Massachusetts and Vermont community college systems, where he has served on both curriculum and developmental math committees. He has also taught at St. Michael's College and The University of Vermont. Professor Ellenbogen has been active in the Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges since 1985, having served on its Developmental Mathematics Committee and as a delegate, and has been a member ofthe Mathematical Association of America since 1979. He has authored dozens of publications on topics ranging from prealgebra to calculus and has delivered lectures at numerous conferences on the use of language in mathematics. Professor Ellenbogen received his BA in mathematics from Bates College and his MA in community college mathematics education from The University of Massachusetts at Amherst. A co-founder of the Colchester Vermont Recycling Program, Professor Ellenbogen has a deep love for the environment and the outdoors, especially in his home state of Vermont. In his spare time, he enjoys playing keyboard in the band Soularium, volunteering as a community mentor, hiking, biking, and skiing. He has two sons, Monroe and Zack.

Judy Beecher has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Indiana University and a graduate degree in mathematics from Purdue University. She has taught at both the high school and college levels with many years of developmental math and precalculus teaching experience at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis. In addition to her career in textbook publishing, she spends time traveling, enjoying her grandchildren, and promoting charity projects for a children's camp. Judy Penna received her undergraduate degree in mathematics from Kansas State University and her graduate degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois. Since then, she has taught at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis and at Butler University, and continues to focus on writing quality textbooks for undergraduate mathematics students. "With training in mathematics, statistics, and economics, Michael Sullivan, III has a varied teaching background that includes 15 years of instruction in both high school and college-level mathematics. He is currently a full-time professor of mathematics at Joliet Junior College. Michael has numerous textbooks in publication, including an Introductory Statistics series, and a Precalculus series, which he writes with his father, Michael Sullivan. Michael believes that his experiences writing texts for college-level math and statistics courses give him a unique perspective as to where students are headed once they leave the developmental mathematics tract. This experience is reflected in the philosophy and presentation of his developmental text series. When not in the classroom or writing, Michael enjoys spending time with his three children, Michael, Kevin, and Marissa, and playing golf. Now that his two sons are getting older, he has the opportunity to do both at the same time! Kathy Struve, "Columbus State Community College
"Kathy Struve has been a classroom teacher for nearly 25 years, first at the high school level, and, for the past 13 years, at Columbus State Community College. Kathy emphasizes classroom diversity: diversity of age, learning styles, and previous learning success. She is aware of the challenges of teaching mathematics at a large, urban community college, where students have varied mathematics backgrounds, and may enter college with a high level of mathematics anxiety. Kathy served as Lead Instructor of the Developmental Algebra sequence at Columbus State where she developed curriculum and provided leadership toadjunct faculty in implementing graphing calculator technology in the classroom. She has authored classroom activities at the Elementary Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and College Algebra levels and conducted workshops at local, state, and national conferences on both integrating graphing calculator applications into the curriculum and developing varied forms of assessment. This textbook incorporates her 25 years of experience in addressing the individual needs of students.

I like the binder version

I like the binder version of this book because I can just the chapter with me to study instead of the whole book. Very helpful and well written, really helped me to understand statistics.
