About the Author
Bob Blitzer is a native of Manhattan and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with dual majors in mathematics and psychology (minor: English literature) from the City College of New York. His unusual combination of academic interests led him toward a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Miami and a doctorate in behavioral sciences from Nova University. Bob is most energized by teaching mathematics and has taught a variety of mathematics courses at Miami-Dade College for nearly 30 years. He has received numerous teaching awards, including Innovator of the Year from the League for Innovations in the Community College, and was among the first group of recipients at Miami-Dade College for an endowed chair based on excellence in the classroom. Not an actual textbook

Nowhere in the description did it state that this was a binder edition. It was such a headache having to put plastic sleeves on over 300 pages to keep them from tearing.

About the Author

Robert Stine holds a PhD from Princeton University. He has taught at the Wharton School since 1983, during which time he has regularly taught business statistics. During his tenure, Bob has received a variety of teaching awards. Bob also actively consults for industry. His clients include the pharmaceutical firms Merck and Pfizer, and he regularly works with the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia on models for retail credit risk. This collaboration has produced three well-received conferences held at Wharton. His areas of research include computer software, time series analysis and forecasting, and general problems related to model identification and selection. Bob has published numerous articles in research journals, including the Journal of the American Statistical Association, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Biometrika, and The Annals of Statistics. He was recently awarded the 2011 Helen Kardon Moss Anvil Award for outstanding teaching quality at the Wharton School.

 

Dean Foster holds a PhD from the University of Maryland. He has taught at the Wharton School since 1992 and previously taught at the University of Chicago. Dean teaches courses in introductory business statistics, probability and Markov chains, statistical computing, and advanced statistics for managers. Dean’s research areas are statistical inference for stochastic processes, game theory, machine learning, and variable selection. He is published in a wide variety of journals, including The Annals of Statistics, Operations Research, Games and Economic Behaviour, Journal of Theoretical Population Biology, and Econometrica.

 

Bob Stine and Dean Foster have co-authored two casebooks: Basic Business Statistics (Springer-Verlag) and Business Analysis Using Regression (Springer-Verlag). These casebooks offer a collection of data analysis examples that motivate and illustrate key ideas of statistics, ranging from standard error to regression diagnostics and time series analysis. They also have collaborated on a number of research articles.

Fine text, but lack of CD datasets makes some exercises impossible

Pros: The text itself does an excellent job at presenting basic concepts and examples, and relating the material to realistic scenarios as one encounters in the business world (quality control, political polling, etc.) The starting point of the text is appropriate for those with no prior knowledge of statistics or, perhaps, data presentation. Thus, the first chapters aren't exactly page turners. Nonetheless, I find Stine's later chapters (14/30 onwards) provide a good shelf companion for those occasionally needing to refresh their knowledge of various tests and inference methods.

Cons: My main issue with this *Kindle edition* comes from the fact that a relatively large number of problems and exercises at the end of chapters call for datasets on a CD which is not supplied with this digital version. Sadly, the publisher's website is of little help here. If only there existed some sort of technology that would allow people to download files remotely...

The book is an exact copy of the original textbook, just black and white and without page numbers that match the original textbook. But the answers to the questions at the end of every chapter makes up for it!

Really bad statistics textbook

First off, I have no clue why my professor actually chose to use this textbook; you would think that a very knowledgeable statistics professor would know better than to use such a verbose, pointless, and confusing textbook. The textbook is poor at explaining the concepts of statistics. Statistics as a whole is not that confusing, but this textbook makes your head spin. After a quarter of confusion, I am opting to purchase a better textbook. If you are choosing this textbook to learn about statistics, think again. There are other books out there for you!

About the Author
Randy Knight has taught introductory physics for 25 years at Ohio State University and California Polytechnic University, where he is currently Professor of Physics and Director of the Minor in Environmental Studies. Randy received a Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley and was a post-doctoral fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics before joining the faculty at Ohio State University. It was at Ohio State, under the mentorship of Professor Leonard Jossem, that he began to learn about the research in physics education that, many years later, led to Five Easy Lessons: Strategies for Successful Physics Teaching and this book. Randy's research interests are in the field of lasers and spectroscopy. When he's not in the classroom or in front of a computer, you can find Randy hiking, sea kayaking, playing the piano, or spending time with his wife Sally and their seven cats.

About the Author

Sharon J. Gerson and Steven M. Gerson are dedicated career professionals who have a combined total of over 80 years teaching experience at the college and university level. They have taught technical writing, business writing, professional writing, and technical communication to thousands of students, attended and presented at dozens of conferences, written numerous articles, and published several textbooks, including The Red Bridge Reader (third edition, co-authored by Kin Norman), Writing That Works: A Teacher’s Guide to Technical Writing (second edition), Workplace Communication:  Process and Product (first edition), and Workplace Writing: Planning, Packaging, and Perfecting Communication (first edition).  

 

In addition to their academic work, Sharon and Steve are involved in business and industry through their business, Steve Gerson Consulting. In this business, they have worked for companies such as Sprint, AlliedSignal—Honeywell, General Electric, JCPenney, Avon, the Missouri Department of Transportation, H&R Block, Mid America Regional Council, and Commerce Bank.  Their work for these businesses includes writing, editing, and proofreading many different types of technical documents, such as proposals, marketing collateral, reports, and instructions.

 

Steve also has presented hundreds of hands-on workshops on technical/business writing, business grammar in the workplace, oral presentations in the workplace, and business etiquette.  Over 10,000 business and governmental employees have benefited from these workshops. For the past decade, Steve has worked closely with K—12 teachers. He has presented many well-attended, interactive workshops to give teachers useful tips about technical writing in the classroom.

 

Both Steve and Sharon have been awarded for teaching excellence and are listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. Steve is a Society for Technical Communication Fellow.  In 2003, Steve was named Kansas Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Education.

About the Author

John Tobey received his BA in mathematics from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois in 1965, his MA in mathematics education from Harvard University in 1966, and his PhD in mathematics education from Boston University in 1980. He has taught in the mathematics department at the United States Military Academy at West Point and served as the Mathematics Department Chairman at North Shore Community College in Danvers, Massachusetts for five years. John has served as the president of the New England Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges. He has received the NISOD award for outstanding teaching from the University of Texas at Austin. John is the author of seven mathematics books published by Pearson Education. John has spoken to many mathematics departments and at many professional meetings throughout the country on the topic of developmental mathematics education and distance learning in mathematics. He lives in Massachusetts.

 

Jeffrey Slater has been a professor at North Shore Community College for thirty-eight years and received the Teacher of the Year award in 2002. Jeff travels around the country speaking on student retention and is also a consultant to the Federal Government. He lives in Marblehead, Massachusetts with his wife Shelley and his yellow lab Gracie.

 

Jamie Blair has directed the Mathematics Learning Center at Orange Coast College for the past seventeen years. She designed, developed, and implemented the Center, and as a result of this effort has provided technical expertise related to the particulars of the Math Center to numerous other two-year colleges and at many conferences. In 2007 Jamie was appointed to the Team of Basic Skills Specialist by the California State Academic Senate. She is also currently participating on Title 3 committees on her campus. She specializes in teaching students who have never been successful in mathematics. She is an expert in the area of basic skills in relation to the learning needs of students. She lives in California.

 

Jennifer Crawford received her BS in mathematics from the University of Minnesota – Duluth in 1995 and her MS in mathematics from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities in 1998. She taught a wide range of courses at North Shore Community College in Danvers, Massachusetts for five years. She currently teaches at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minnesota where her focus is working with developmental math students. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota with her husband, two young children, and black lab.

Very good book, very detailed.

I would recommend it, it really help me with my pre algebra class. I didn't need to use the access card package, so unless you really need the access code, you can always buy it without it and pay less.

The access card does not work with used books. I wish the description would have said this. I ended up having to buy mymathlab package online and didn't use this book AT ALL. Total waste

About the Author
Carl T. Dahlman earned degrees in sociology, music, and urban affairs before receiving his Ph.D. in geography from the University of Kentucky in 2001. He is the Director of the International Studies Program at Miami University, where his teaching focuses on political geography, migration and mobility, and globalization. His current research includes the role of European integration in the geopolitics of Southeastern Europe, and he has published a book on the subject, Bosnia Remade: Ethnic Cleansing and Its Reversal (Oxford University Press, with Gearóid Ó Tuathail). He is a co-author of Pearson’s Introduction to Contemporary Geography, with James M. Rubenstein and William H. Renwick. He enjoys photography and hunting for fossils with his son.

William H. Renwick earned a B.A. from Rhode Island College in 1973 and a Ph.D. in geography from Clark University in 1979. He has taught at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Rutgers University, and is currently Associate Professor of Geography at Miami University. A physical geographer with interests in geomorphology and environmental issues, his research focuses on impacts of land-use change on rivers and lakes, particularly in agricultural landscapes in the Midwest. He is a co-author of Pearson’s Introduction to Contemporary Geography, with James M. Rubenstein and Carl T. Dahlman. When time permits, he studies these environments from the seat of a wooden canoeboat. He is a co-author of Pearson’s Introduction to Contemporary Geography, with James M. Rubenstein and Carl T. Dahlman.

A Good Textbook

This is a good textbook for an introduction to geography course. It is a thematic or systematic approach rather than a regional approach to the subject. It has good supporting materials for students, although Mastering Geography is not included in the cost of the text. It has excellent pictures for helping to make points and some good charts and diagrams. The paper is of slick quality and does give off glare when reading. It has some helpful materials that you can avail yourself of using your cell phone and scanning the code, although I am not sure how much a student would use this feature. The writing seems a little stiff and the text seems perhaps too factual and less student involving. Students may have more of a tendency to hunt and skip rather than fully read the text, or at least that is my impression. The end of chapter review is good. A somewhat unique alternative to look at is Introduction to Contemporary Geography by the same publisher. It offers some different possibilities.

Intro to Geography by Dahlman and Renwick is an excellent, current (late 2013) geography for college text/reference book. The visuals are beautifully reproduced and it is well-structured for learning.

I received this book in a really bad condition. It was missing the first section of the first chapter that I had to borrow someone's book to check my answers. Besides that, all the pages came apart every time I touched one. It made my life harder as I had to glue the pages in so I won't lose them.
