About the Author

Barry B. Powell , after graduation from Berkeley and Harvard, taught at Northern Arizona University, then took a job at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he taught for 34 years. He is a master of many languages, both ancient and modern, and for many years taught Egyptian philology and culture at Wisconsin, in addition to courses in Classics. His book Homer and the Origin of the Greek Alphabet, which advanced the thesis that one man invented the Greek alphabet in order to record the poet Homer, has become a classic and changed the way we think about the origins of Western Culture. He has written many other books, including two novels and a book of poetry. His book Classical Myth, is the best-book on the topic, and is now in its seventh edition. His book Homer is the best-selling study of this author. The Greeks: History, Culture, and Society (second edition, with Ian Morris) is widely used in college classrooms. He is currently preparing a translation of the Iliad and the Odyssey. He lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he and his wife Patricia enjoy the company of their children and grandchildren.

Great Resource and very informative.

Adobe Flash Professional CS6 is a program beyond words. Your designs are only limited by your imagination. Because this is such an epic program, it needs an epic training manual. My Classroom in a Book copy definatly is. The lesson structures are very easy to navigate through. It's concise yet very informative lessons allow you to tackle this MAMMOTH program head-on. I would even recommend this book to someone that has yet to use the program and has no expierience in web design and development or graphic design whatsoever. Myself, having a masters in web design and development including a bachelor's in graphic design, would give this bhook an A+. I'd only give all the competing books of this type a "C++" (pun intended! ^_^ ). Another good thing about it is it was written and composed by the very people and company that wrote Adobe Creative Suite 6 to begin with. For those people that want to create the most advanced and creative web content ever, but dont have the know how to use Flash, this book is for you. The only negative remark I would leave about this piece of literature is this: the lesson files have not changed really at all from the Flash CS5 book (the previous volume in the educational series from ~2010). Most of the textual content is also the same or very similar like it was just copied and pasted. I mean at least create new lesson example files...
One last thing is that I believe that this book should COME WITH the Flash CS6 software package...I mean it IS $800.00. Or at the very least, it should be included in the Adobe Creative Studio 6 Design premium bundle or at least the master collection, (which happens to be $2,899.00). I mean, I dished out that kind of money, I should at least get these volumes for a free or very reduced price. Overall though, great book for an amaing product!!!!

Excellent learning guide on the basics

I am new to using Flash Professional and after going thru the lessons in this book which by the way are dummied down to the lowest level which is great, I truly gained a better understanding of the layout, tools, and functions that flash offers. For those that want to know all the ends and outs of Flash this book will not help you there but instead will walk you thru on how to use the program and prove to be a great resource later down the road.

As a side note I'm extremely ADD so if this book held my attention and taught me something it must have something going for it.

Does not give you all the Files
By Do not trust this
I contacted Peachpit after I rented the book. It has in the kindle version a link to the files. Those files are suppose to have video for all chapters, and only 4 Chapters are covered. Why? I contacted them as they instructed and no response, you would think they would know that their is video missing for the rest of the chapters? No response whatsoever

About the Author

Kim Flachmann received her doctorate in Rhetoric and Twentieth-Century American Literature at the University of Oregon. Her dissertation was a stylistic analysis of William Carlos Williams’ poetry. Kim has been teaching at California State University, Bakersfield, where she also administers the Composition Program—from remedial English through the Graduate Teaching Assistants. She has published numerous articles on rhetoric and American literature and has written six textbooks—among them a very successful college reader for Pearson (The Prose Reader, in its ninth edition) and a series of three books for Pearson, called Mosaics, for developmental English, progressing from sentence-level to paragraph-level and finally to essay work. In addition, she received the Outstanding Professor Award for 1998-99 at California State University, Bakersfield; the Rhetorician of the Year Award from the Young Rhetoricians’ Conference in 2007; and an award from California Association of Teachers of English for Classroom Excellence in 2009.

About the Author

With training in mathematics, statistics, and economics, Mike Sullivan, III has a varied teaching background that includes 15 years of instruction in both high school and college-level mathematics. He is currently a full-time professor of mathematics and statistics at Joliet Junior College. Mike has numerous textbooks in publication in addition to his Introductory Statistics Series, which include a Developmental Math series, and a Precalculus series, which he writes with his father, Michael Sullivan. Mike has built this book in the classroom using feedback from his students. He is well aware of the challenges of students taking an introductory statistics course. His goal is for students to be more informed interpreters of data, so that they will be better decision makers and have stronger critical-thinking skills. When not in the classroom or writing, Mike enjoys spending time with his three children, Michael, Kevin, and Marissa, and playing golf. MyStatLab access included, not MathLabsPlus which is what I needed

The book was correct, but the access code did not work for MLP (MathLabsPlus) which is required for my online class through the Columbia College of Missouri. I had to shell out the additional funds at Pearson for MLP. Make sure your class is using MyStatLab, not a different access version. Thay are all through Pearson, just have different names.
The My Stat Lab access is clearly indicated in description, this was my error. I am including this info in my review so nobody else makes this mistake.
If you only need the etext book, not a paperback that you can hold, you can go to pearsons website and buy the lab access that comes with access to the ebook ONLINE only. It can not be downloaded, but you can print some things.

The best math book I have used

I bought this text so I could help my wife with a Statistics course that uses this book. I have gone through about half the book and am really enjoying it. There are very few mistakes and the author uses many real examples of statistical studies to illustrate points. Math has been my hobby for quite some time and I've used many different text books. I would rank this book among the top of all the books in all the areas of math that I have studied.

Statistics...ugh!

It's great that I could rent this one so cheap (less than 1/4 what they want at the bookstore!) Mr. Sullivan also does a good job of making the subject easy to comprehend. The book arrived in a timely fashion, and in very good shape. Thank you! :-)

About the Author
Randy Knight has taught introductory physics for 25 years at Ohio State University and California Polytechnic University, where he is currently Professor of Physics and Director of the Minor in Environmental Studies. Randy received a Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley and was a post-doctoral fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics before joining the faculty at Ohio State University. It was at Ohio State, under the mentorship of Professor Leonard Jossem, that he began to learn about the research in physics education that, many years later, led to Five Easy Lessons: Strategies for Successful Physics Teaching and this book. Randy's research interests are in the field of lasers and spectroscopy. When he's not in the classroom or in front of a computer, you can find Randy hiking, sea kayaking, playing the piano, or spending time with his wife Sally and their seven cats.

About the Author

Diane Fitton is a full professor in the Transitional Studies Department at Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York, where she teaches Introduction to College Studies and developmental-level English courses. In addition, Fitton coordinates college success and orientation courses offered each semester. Fitton is the author of On Campus – An Interactive Guide to College (Prentice Hall 2009), and co-authored New Beginning – Writing with Fluency (Houghton Mifflin 2001) and From Narrative Onward – Writing with a Focus (Houghton Mifflin 2001).

Recipient of the Dr. Wesley T. Hanson Award for Teaching Excellence (2001), Fitton began her career in education teaching English at Sheepshead Bay High School in Brooklyn, New York in 1969. In addition to a Master of Science in Education (Reading), she earned a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Education Administration.

Every iOS developer should have this on their bookshelf

This book is truly outstanding. The author's knowledge of the subject is both deep and broad, and her writing style is clear and informative. The cookbook format provides small, working examples that are easy to digest and quickly illustrate complex subjects. I've read quite a few developers' references in my career, and this is hands down the best I've ever read.

It includes both introductory and advanced topics, but where it really shines for me is the way it shows how to use advanced techniques in a very clear, useful form.

I got an early edition that had some formatting problems, but the misprinted version was still my "go to" reference of choice. The publisher sent me a corrected version today, and I can't wait to dive into it.

Just last week I was wrestling with a problem with Core Image in iOS 5, and could not get get my code to work. I finally concluded that there was a bug in Apple's Code. On a lark, I decided to see if the Developer's cookbook could offer me any help. Sure enough, the Core Image filter recipe included code that worked around Apple's bug, and got me up and running. I only wish I had cracked this book before wasting most of a day wrestling with my code. (I've since filed a bug with Apple and gotten confirmation that there is indeed a bug in Apple's Core Image framework.)

The book is full of tested, real-world gems like that.

As I said in the title, every serious iOS developer should own a copy of this book. Buy it. You'll be glad you did.

Great iOS5 book!

This book provides by far the most background information on Objective-C and iOS5 of all iOS books I have read so far. I doesn't start right away with a "hello world" program but provides the information you need to really understand what is going on. I have started quite a few iOS books only to stop after a few chapters, but this book does not fall in that category. I have not finished the book, that will take weeks but from what I have read this far I can recommend it to anyone who wants to really understand what he is doing and how things work in iOS5. Highly recommended!

very good book

This is a very good book for IOS beginners. The most important tip is to download the source code and run them one by one as you read the book. It will be very challenging if you only read the text. There are many useful examples and this book is definitely a good "cookbook".
