Great intro to the D3200 as well as helpful for a beginner photographer.

I recently graduated from a point and shoot camera to my first DSLR, the Nikon D3200. I was trying to decided between this book and a few others, and ended up choosing this one because it has a chapter completely dedicated to Landscape Photography, my main use for the camera.

This is a great book for both getting yourself familiar with the D3200, as well as learning to get good photos with a DSLR. I particularly like how each photo in the book lists the ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed on it. I found this incredibly useful for gaining a better understanding of how those interact. I spent a few hours one evening reading through a lot of the book, and then went for a 10 mile hike in the CO mountains the next day and took photos that I was very happy with.

My only gripe, and it's minor, is that there were a few times when a feature was discussed in the book, and it took me several minutes of messing around with the camera to figure it out. In both cases I found the explanation much further into the book in later chapters. Two examples:
1. One of the first things the author encourages is to take the camera off of ISO Automatic mode. This being my first DSLR I had turned it on into the Auto mode I was used to, and could not figure out why the camera would not let me change the ISO. After much trial and error I figured out you have to be in one of the manual modes to change the ISO. This is mentioned in the chapters that deal with manual modes, but not when he first instructs you to make the change.
2. The author explains all of the different viewing modes to review photos on the camera, and instructs how to enable them, but not how to actually access them with your pictures until later chapters. After hitting just about every button on the camera, I finally figured out that hitting up/down while viewing a picture does this. Again, this gets explained eventually, but not when you first learn about it.

Outside of those minor frustrations, I found the book extremely informative and useful. I definitely recommend, especially for a new DSLR user looking to learn about taking better photos in addition to just using the D3200.

Other guides teach you how to operate the D3200; this one teaches you how to take photographs

When I first purchased my Nikon D3200, I purchased two books - this one and David Busch's Nikon D3200 Guide.

The Busch book is a fine book to have in your arsenal as it explains in minute detail how to operate every feature of your new camera. However, while it's a great operating manual, it doesn't teach you how to use those features to take great photographs.

Nikon D3200: From Snapshots to Great Shots is more of a photography how-to book than an operating manual. You'll find plenty of tips here on how to operate your camera, but they're covered in the context of how to apply those features in order to take satisfying photographs. Some of the features that I particularly like in this book are the large color photographs at the beginning of each chapter which have call outs explaining how the camera was used to take the shot. I also found the step-by-step instructions for various tasks involved in different techniques extremely helpful. The assignments at the end of each chapter can be somewhat simplistic if you're already an experienced photographer, but even the simplistic assignments can help refresh your memory. The writing style throughout the book is conversational in tone and the language is approachable and easy to unerstand. I almost felt like a friend was explaining things to me.

Overall, this is an excellent book that helped me to begin taking better photgraphs with my new camera right away. I know I will return to it again and again as I try new types of photography. I do think that Busch's book is worth purchasing as a companion as it provides a much more detailed technical look at the D3200, but this book is really a great starting point for anyone getting started with the Nikon D3200.

Great start for a great camera

Like so many I wanted to take my photo's from good to exceptional. And like so many I new I needed to invest into the equipment to do so. The hard part is how to get the most out of your investment. You really don't want to use a piece of equipment as nice as the Nikon 3200 as a point and shoot. This gives the practical side of learning your camera. It is not a review of the manual, rather tool to apply all the wonderful features of the D3200 into the real world. It will not make you a professional photographer but will give you the confidence to try.

OK, but not totally trustworthy.

It feels like this book was assembled and edited by some overworked, under-caffeinated TA's in the 11th hour before print date. I keep coming across blatant mistakes (eg: in Section 1.2, the solution published for problem 17 actually correlates to problem 18 in the textbook). I still use it, since it does provide steps towards the solution (rather than simply giving "the answer"), but I have to stay alert. I don't trust the book completely- which I suppose might be be making me a stronger Algebrist, in a way. But if all you are looking for are the problems' solutions to check yourself, bear in mind the odd numbered problems' solutions are printed in the back of the actual textbook. Try to get the lowest-priced copy of this book that you can find.

Just use the solutions given in the back of the textbook

This manual wasn't written by the same author as the textbook, and it shows. Gives solutions, but sometimes uses different methods than described in book, skips steps, or makes assumptions. Over the course of the semester, I even found a few incorrect answers. Not good. You're better off using the solutions given in the back of the book.

Missing info... perhaps not good for Windows users

Based on the reviews, I was excited to get this book.

However, I quickly found that the earliest examples on the DVD do not match the references in the book.

For instance, in Chapter 4, on page 57, the authors refer to a video clip, MVI_0152.MOV. However, this file cannot be found anywhere in the Chapter 4 files on the DVD.

Additionally, the authors provide a video tutorial that talks about the "Common Media Folder". The video even says that a copy of the Common Media Folder is included on the DVD. Sure enough, there's a zip file with that name, but attempts to open it in Windows 7 only create a file called DS_Store that I believe is an Apple-specific construct.

I checked with the publisher's website, hoping to find some errata, or explanation, but couldn't locate anything.

So at this point, I'd have to warn Windows users to be prepared to work through some errors.

Overall, the book looks good, and I think it will still provide some utility. But if you're attempting to carefully follow the examples on the included DVD, you may be in for some difficulties. If the examples get cleaner, I'll be sure to revise my rating.

(Note: Since I can't find any listing of errors, as I continue to run into them I'll post them here.. especially those mistakes that I think could lead to some confusion. Perhaps that will help other readers, particularly Windows users.)

* Error on Page 75 - Step 5 asks you to choose the 1.2121 ratio, when it's the 0.9091 ratio that will correct the stretched red clip.

* Error on Page 76 - Step 1 says to open the sequence "03 PAR". That actual name of the sequence is "03 Field Order".

* Clarification for Page 108 - Trouble importing some of the .mov files when you load the Chapter 6 project. Some of these files will require the Cineform codec.

The authors provide a link (on page xiii) to the Cineform codec needed to load these files. The codec used to be called "NeoPlayer" but is now called "GoPro Cineform decoder". You'll find the codec not under Support/Downloads, but under Support/Free Decoder.

* Clarification for Page 127 - When you load the project files for Chapter 7, you'll have to specify the location of some files, which are in the Media folder for Chapter 6. You'll also be asked for file "Music_Bed.aif", which can be found in the Media folder for Chaper 7.

* Error on Page 140 - The Authors instruct you to use Ctrl+T to add a transition. On the Windows package, Ctrl+T is the short cut for "New Title". "New Transition is Ctrl+D

* Error on Page 150 - The authors instruct you to load sequence "05 Copy and Paste". The loaded project does not contain this sequence, which would leave you unable to perform this exercise. However, you can create the sequence by...

- Choose the "New Item" button, then "Sequence".
- Select Digital SLR/1080p/DSLR 1080p24
- Drag the file MVI_8595.mov to the timeline, and zoom if necessary to match the book.
- Rename the sequence "05 Copy and Paste".

* Error on Page 154 - In Windows, Ripple Delete is Shift+Delete, not Alt+Delete.

* Error on Page 173 - The timecode the authors ask you to set on the Slip Edit example (In: 02:16:45:10 & Out: 02:16:51:15) are impossible as the clip actually starts 02:16:49:00. I like to slip the In point to 02:16:53:04, so the clip begins panning on the man, and he comes into focus on the word "mortals".

* Error on Page 177 - Trim Monitor: The authors instruct you to choose "Sequence > Trim Edit", or press T. The menu choice opens an effect window, not the Trim Monitor. Pressing "T" will work. To open the Trim Editor via the menus, choose "Window > Trim Monitor".

* Oversight on Page 289 - Loudness: In step 5 the authors assume that you can see the Loudness and other values for the two added clips. However, you can't see this unless you click "Compute average volume..." button (looks like a little magnifying glass) near the top of the Match Volume tab.

Harrington, Carman, Greenberg and Premiere Pro....love it!

Buy a book or watch online tutorials? Switch NLEs? The past two years have been the wild west for both professionals and those learning the craft of editing. Not only do these three prove that asking the question, "Who edited this?" is better than "What was this editied on?", they prove that knowing the tools, organizing your stuff, and trying new approaches brings about the creativity we all want to show the world.

I've been doing this for 20+ years, but I have no ego about saying I have learned a great deal from these three professionals through this book. As an editor and educator, do not hesitate to consider this for the personal, professional, or educational development. "Harrington, Carman, and Greenberg" might sound like that law firm you don't want to go up against, but these three share more than most will about CS6 Premiere Pro and how to do great work.

So, yeah, you want this book.

An Editor's Guide to Adobe Premiere Pro (2nd Edition)

First off, though the title doesn't make it clear, this book is based on CS6, which is what I wanted, not CC. Also, it's for the PRINTED version, not Kindle.

I gladly give the book 5 stars, though maybe only 4 for some issues I've outlined further down. I've used PPro for a while now, mostly self taught, and, as is typical of us self-taught students, I realize just how little I've actually taught myself and how very inefficiently I've been working . Remembering all the great tips will take time, but it'll be time well spent.

I would knock off 1 star because of some errors which are not typos, and for difficult to follow writing style in certain sections. After spending time trying to get something to work, I then realize that instead of a certain keystroke combination, the author actually meant another. Case in point: advises using Alt-left/right arrow to nudge a clip. The correct combination is actually Ctrl-left/right arrow. This is on page 168, and is repeated on the side-note on pages 170, and on pages 173 and 175 and perhaps thereafter (not sure). It's certainly not a huge deal, but I did waste a lot of time before realizing the error. In all fairness, the key combination is correctly identified in the (printable) shortcut pdf file as well as on the video, but I didn't read or watch these until after I had figured it out on my own.

While all the exercises are useful, a few are somewhat difficult to follow, either because of phrasing, or because the accompanying pictures are not clearly showing what is being described. The two images on page 196 identify the same area as being two separate things, which I found confusing. Other images show the correct area of the interface, but do not highlight what the authors are trying to point out. A red circle would be great.

Also, I was left mystified by the explanation on page 200, point 6. I'm sure it means something, but so far I still haven't deciphered it. Same goes for the 3rd paragraph on page 204. And the entire section starting on page 201 "Routing with Adaptive Tracks" simply left me totally confused. Maybe it's the writing, or just as likely it's a difficult topic and I simply need to go through it again more thoroughly. But in any case, at the end of it all, I was totally unsure about the WHY of the exercise, not so much the how.

But again, on the positive side, the most useful part of all to me are the included practice files, without which the book would be pointless. I use Lynda.com extensively but have opted out of their premium service (due to high cost) which includes the practice files. But at $35 or so this book is a bargain, one which I can go back to again and again.

The authors make a big deal out of saying this book is great for people migrating from other NLE's. And I'm sure they are correct. But don't be fooled, this book is also great for anyone with or without prior PPro knowledge (real or imagined, as in my case).

I chose it above the several other options I had for two primary reasons: one, it seemed to not be just another basic how-to book for beginners, and two, it included the practice files. As a bonus there are several hours of video training (73 videos) as well which coincide with some though not all of the lessons. In retrospect maybe I should have looked at a video first before doing the accompanying exercise.

I would definitely recommend this book. There may be others good ones as well, but you will not go wrong with this book.

About the Author

William E. Cain is Mary Jewett Gaiser Professor of English at Wellesley College. Among his many publications is a monograph on American literary and cultural criticism, 1900-1945, in The Cambridge History of American Literature, Vol. 5 (2003). He is a co-editor of the Norton Anthology of Literary Theory and Criticism (2nd ed., 2010), and, with Sylvan Barnet, he has co-authored a number of books on literature and composition. His recent publications include essays on Ralph Ellison, Ernest Hemingway, George Orwell, Shakespeare, Edith Wharton, and the painter Mark Rothko.

Alice McDermott is the author of the forthcoming novel Someone and six previous novels, including After This; Child of My Heart; Charming Billy, winner of the 1998 National Book Award; and At Weddings and Wakes, all published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. That Night, At Weddings and Wakes, and After This were all finalists for the Pulitzer Prize. McDermott lives with her family outside Washington, D.C.

Lance E. Newman is Professor of English and Environmental Studies at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, where he teaches Early American Literature, Environmental Literature, and Creative Writing. He has also worked as a river guide for more than two decades, leading rafting trips in Southeastern Utah and in Grand Canyon. He is the author of The Grand Canyon Reader (University of California Press, 2011) and Our Common Dwelling: Henry Thoreau, Transcendentalism, and the Class Politics of Nature (Palgrave, 2005). With Joel Pace and Chris Keonig-Woodyard, he co-edited Transatlantic Romanticism: An Anthology of British, American, and Canadian Literature, 1767-1867 (Longman, 2006). He co-produced the documentary film Canyonlands: Edward Abbey and the Great American Desert (2011) with Roderick Coover. Newman’s poems have appeared in many print and web magazines, and he is the author of two poetry chapbooks, Come Kanab (Dusi-e/chaps Kollectiv, 2007) and 3by3by3 (Beard of Bees, 2010), both available free on the Web.

Hilary E. Wyss is Hargis Professor of American Literature at Auburn University, where she teaches courses in early American literature, American studies, and Native American studies. She is the author of over a dozen articles and book chapters as well as three books, including English Letters and Indian Literacies: Reading, Writing, and New England Missionary Schools, 1750-1830 (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2012); Early Native Literacies in New England: a Documentary and Critical Anthology (University of Massachusetts Press, 2008, co-edited with Kristina Bross); and Writing Indians: Literacy, Christianity, and Native Community in Early America (University of Massachusetts Press, 2000). She has won teaching awards at Auburn University as well as national research grants to support her work. She has served on the editorial board of the journal Early American Literature and was most recently the President of the Society of Early Americanists.

If you're going to be using this book on MyMathLab/MathXL then take my advice - don't waste any more money to buy the book. The entirety of the book is available as an ebook included with your subscription code.

This book is a heavy, huge waste of space. There is little to be learned from the book, as it is essentially a massive topic outline with an occasional example and copious self-assessment type questions. The questions which appear at the end of every section are page fillers - most of the work you do on an online class will render all those questions dead space. The online "View an Example" button is (in the absence of a good teacher/tutor) the only thing that teaches you how to do a problem, which shows you step by step (most of the time) how to solve that type of problem. Occasionally, you'll be quizzed on something that is not explained in the book - or explained in such a high level that no solution can be derived that will help you in practice. The answers to all the hundreds of pages of questions are not explained, only given. This leads me to believe that those working purely from the book without an online component are just as, if not worse off, than the online folks.

Students will have little choice in the selection of this book - it is my hope that teachers will see these reviews and choose a more helpful book. If all you care about as a teacher is hitting topic points, this book will make that painfully clear, but it will do your students no service as a learning tool. At the very least, make the book optional where online access applies.

Lastly, if you are considering the loose leaf book, stop considering. The book is useless enough as it is, but the ultimate price of saving the few bucks in binding is that loose leaf has literally no resale value. This will make you likely ineligible for book buyback and selling online is risky since nobody knows what pages may or may not be missing or what condition they're in after not having a binding. If you simply must have this book, look to a bound or electronic rental where applicable. This is one of those cases where nearly any price of rental below selling price will be a worthwhile transaction.

A great reference

I wish some of the examples were a little clearer in this book, but let's face it. You HAVE to buy this book for your math class. I think it's a good book because of it's breadth. Many topics are covered so I imagine it will be quite useful to look back over during my next few semesters in calculus.
