Mark Christiansen (christiansen.com) is a visual effects supervisor and creative director with a studio in San Francisco. He has worked with visual effects companies such as ILM, The Orphanage, and Evil Eye Pictures on Hollywood feature and independent films, and has served as a director, producer, designer, and compositor/animator on commercials, music videos, live events, and television documentary productions. Mark has done work directly for the Adobe After Effects development and marketing teams, is a founder at provideocoalition.com, and has taught courses at fxphd.com and Academy of Art University. This book is for the proficient who want to become experts.

When I decided to learn visual effects, Mark Christiansen's After Effects Studio Techniques became my bible. There is no better book for understanding how Adobe After Effects solves compositing and other vfx challenges. If you've mastered the beginning steps of AE, and are ready to make realistic illusions, and UNDERSTAND how these illusions work, then pick up this book and make some time for it. It's not easy reading, and it's not for beginners, but it will take you from competent to expert.
Every artisan goes through stages: from beginner, to proficient "journeyman," to master. In the world of technology and software, that journey is fast-paced, but also perilous-- the tool you relied on for years can become obsolete, or worse, be abandoned by its creators. Adobe After Effects has survived because of its flexibility and adaptability. It can make motion graphics, it can pull a greenscreen key, and it can even be a finishing suite for a video project.
But in order to get the most out of After Effects, users have to get beyond the project focused tutorials of Video Copilot and the like, and understand the limits and strengths of AE. Christiansen has the expertise to expound on the obscure technical details of this software, and he and his editor have the clear, articulate voice to present this information with concise language, detailed prose, and even a bit of humor. It is the theory and engineering behind compositing that I was looking for in this book, and I found it from beginning to end, along with step-by-step lessons in keying, motion tracking, and other bread-and-butter techniques. They also helped me understand the principles of linear, gamma, and log in video and film, something that had eluded me before.
Adobe After Effects CS6 Visual Effects and Compositing Studio Techniques is an advanced book. It is for AE users who want to take their competence to the level of expert by showing how to use one of the most flexible off-the-shelf applications around to create photorealistic illusions. I recommend it to all my students, and to anyone who is ready to complete their mastery of After Effects.

Best AE Compositing/VFX resource

If you're interested in AE for VFX/compositing, quite simply, you have to own this book...you'll learn something useful in pretty much every paragraph.

Ignore the 1-star review...That guy could benefit from an anger management class. The book clearly states on page xxiii:

"This is not a book for beginners. Although the first section is designed to make sure that you are making optimal use of the software, it's not an effective primer on After Effects in particular or digital video in general. If you're new to After Effects, first spend some time with its excellent documentation or check out one of the many books available to help beginners learn the application."

Mark Christiansen's, After Effects and Visual Compositing Studio Techniques, takes you behind the scenes and under the hood of the latest super revved up version of Adobe After Effects.

The author begins by letting readers know that this is not a book for beginners. There are no step- by- step tutorials to be found here. Instead, Mr. Christiansen has written the book with the thought in mind of helping After Effects users become better visual effects artists. He accomplishes this by telling us pro ways to streamline our workflow, including what tools work best in different scenarios and gives us alternative solutions.

The book covers rotoscoping, motion tracking with the new 3D camera tracker and Mocha AE, color correcting and image optimization, color grading with Speedgrade-, ways to optimize projects and stay organized beyond pre-comping, pre-rendering and nesting layers, creating expressions - which includes a bonus list of additional online recourses, the new Ray-traced 3D Renderer, how to create depth maps, fog, explosions and special lighting effects and more, all while taking advantage of the new Global Performance and Persistent Disk Cache.

Improvements and additions in CS6 are explained thoroughly. All kinds of good tips and what the author calls, "gotchas" for sticky situations are pinpointed and brought to light.

Included with the book is a DVD containing Third party demo plug-ins including Red Giant's Trapcode Suite, Silhouette and Revisions, an Examples folder with all the Chapter files, and a handy Java Script debriefing pdf within a PDF folder chalked full of more resources.

If you are already an After Effects user and want to learn more about the inner workings of After Effects and why a pro would opt for one or a combination of tools over another, than this book will be an asset to you as a visual effects artist.

Vaughn Vernon is a veteran software craftsman with more than twenty-five years of experience in software design, development, and architecture. A book for every software architect and developer

Agile is not easy and implementing Domain-Driven Design (DDD) is not easy. I think my favorite part of the book is that the author realizes that, and also has a realistic perspective on what it takes to successfully use agile processes and DDD.

The book starts out with a really nice overview of DDD. By the time you are done the first chapter you have a pretty good high level picture of what DDD is all about. One topic he really drives home is Ubiquitous Language.

Ubiquitous Language is a shared team language that defines a certain domain. When you are reading about Ubiquitous Language it may seem like something that just happens on its own. It isn't. An explicit domain language should be defined, it should not just be allowed to implicitly come about. This same concept has been around for years in Water Fall, Unified Process, RUP, and other processes. It has always been a very important part of the software development process, so don't discount it.

Chapter 1 also does a great job of providing tips on how to show the business value of using DDD. The author has a clear understanding that without the support of the business you aren't going to get very far with your project, and in order to get them onboard you need to show them what they will gain by supporting DDD.

The remaining chapters dig into the details of DDD. I have listed the chapters below. Their titles are pretty self-explanatory.

I have seen a lot of teams that could not build software with UP or RUP adopt Scrum in hopes that changing the process will make a difference. It never does. There are a variety of reasons including not doing any architecture, not having experienced developers with the right skill sets, not having the right business users involved, not having the requirements elicitation skills needed, and the list can go on and on. The author clearly understands Scrum is not a silver bullet. I mention this because DDD done correctly can give agile processes a much better chance at success, but you must have the skills on the team in order pull it off.

I was really glad to see the author included a chapter on architecture. The author does a great job of covering a ton of architectural styles and patterns. Patterns, styles, and topic found in the Architecture chapter include Layers Architecture with the Dependency Inversion Principle, Hexagonal Architecture, SOA environment, REST, Data Fabric, Grid-Based Distributed Cache, and CQRS.

Every chapter is an in depth look at the topic of the given chapter. I did not leave any of the chapters feeling like I missed something. I have read both Domain-Driven Design: Tackling Complexity in the Heart of Software and Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture, and I had both handy for looking up references to them. It is not necessary to read them first, but it did help that I had.

I am not going to say using DDD is easy, but I will say this book can definitely get you to where you can successfully use it. The author's writing style is really good and he is good at making the book entertaining. I will however say this, be prepared to read the entire book if you want to get to that point of successfully using DDD. There is a lot to learn, but it is worth it.

I highly recommend this book to every software architect and developer. Even if you don't go all out DDD there is a ton of great advice and wisdom found in this book that will help you improve your skills.

Good content; verbose prose, slow read

I have trouble balancing my appreciation for the conceptual material in this book with my dislike of the presentation and language.

There's enough good material in the book for me to convince myself I needed to plow through it to the end; the writing was such that I had to force myself to do it. I'd really like to read a copy of this that had had the benefit of a good editor. It was verbose, and tended to belabor points that I thought had been pretty clearly conveyed in a few pages, so it took a while to get through it.

It's a fairly thorough overview of the DDD space, and I think it filled in some things I didn't get from Evans earlier book. I do question some of the breezy assertions that it was almost always best to opt for the purety of the model over implementation concerns, particularly around doing implementations on top of RDBMS persistence.

I think it was worth the read, but in comparison to other technical books I've read (and I read a lot of them), it was a lot more work to get through the prose than I think it needed to be.

Best modern book for DDD

DDD is definitely not getting the amount of attention it deserves. If you're new to DDD and thinking of reading a book that will introduce you DDD concepts, this is the right choice. It takes out the best from Evan's classic "Domain Driven Design" and mixes in some modern concepts and advices for pragmatic DDD or overall architecture.

This book explains DDD concepts on well-chosen domain problem - agile and SCRUM. Reader (who is very likely to have at least some experience with SCRUM) is going to feel comfortable with most of the examples that this book provides.

Another huge plus is that author stays pragmatic. Author knows that DDD touches lot of 'theoretical' concepts, so he often mentions real-world situations and advises how to compromise certain situations - how can be DDD fully or not-so-fully utilised within your business. If you're afraid of 'too many abstractions' then don't be - peek into table of contents and you will see that author explains DDD on very real and quite recent technologies/buzzwords like REST, CQCS, Hexagonal Architecture etc. Author also assumes that reader is rather new to the whole DDD thing and patiently explains things you were 'afraid to ask', like "What's the difference between DAO and Repository?", "Is it OK to put fine-grained queries to DAO and return Value Objects?" etc.

On the other hand - what's not so great about this book is its verbosity. I don't mind repeating important concepts (redundancy can be useful as we know it from Head First books for example), but I often felt like reading a novel. If I wanted to read a novel, I would buy a novel. Technical books should be brief and precise. I had the feeling that it was happening too often that author went too deep into the problem and I simply got bored way too many times. I think the useful content of this book would comfortably fit into 60% of its length.

Last, but not least, I'd like to exalt the book structure and formatting which was really good. Even Kindle versions gets properly formatted source code, which (unfortunately) still isn't standard.

About the Author

For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student’s perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her publications are known.

Dr. Marieb has partnered with Benjamin Cummings for over 30 years. Her first work was Human Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory Manual (Cat Version), which came out in 1981. In the years since, several other lab manual versions and study guides, as well as the softcover Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology textbook, have hit the campus bookstores. This textbook, now in its Ninth edition, made its appearance in 1989 and is the latest expression of her commitment to the needs of students studying human anatomy and physiology.

Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by funding a staffed drop-in center and by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women who are returning to college after a hiatus or attending college for the first time and who would be unable to continue their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and has underwritten renovation and updating of one of the biology labs in Clapp Laboratory at that college. Dr. Marieb also contributes to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she generously provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory. Recognizing the severe national shortage of nursing faculty, she underwrites the Nursing Scholars of the Future Grant Program at the university.

In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

In January 2012, Florida Gulf Coast University named a new health professions facility “Dr. Elaine Nicpon Marieb Hall.” With the help of Dr. Marieb’s generous donation, this facility contains laboratories in the School of Nursing that simulate an operating room, intensive-care unit, a labor and delivery room, and general medical surgical suites. She has also established a scholarship endowment for non-traditional students in the health professions, and an endowment to enhance the activities of faculty, students, and staff within health professions to support education, research, and community outreach.

Dr. Marieb is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings Interactive Physiology ® CD-ROM series.

When not involved in academic pursuits, Dr. Marieb is a world traveler and has vowed to visit every country on this planet. Shorter term, she serves on the scholarship committee of the Women’s Resources Center and on the board of directors of several charitable institutions in Sarasota County. She is an enthusiastic supporter of the local arts and enjoys a competitive match of doubles tennis.

Susan J. Mitchell earned her Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Michigan. She studied the cellular basis of behavior before joining the faculty at Onondaga Community College where she is currently a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. Her research in neurophysiology and training in physiology positioned her to write the original Nervous, Endocrine, and Digestive System modules in the Interactive Physiology 10-System Suite tutorial program. She has been honored with a NISOD Excellence Award for teaching, and been awarded several grants to develop technological resources for biology at OCC. Dr. Mitchell is a member of the American Physiological Society, National Association of Biology Teachers, National Science Teachers Association, and the Human Anatomy and Physiological Society (HAPS), where she is currently active on the Curriculum and Instruction Committee.

Lori A. Smith received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California at Davis. Before discovering her passion for teaching, she worked as a research scientist and project leader in the medical diagnostics industry. In 1999, she joined the faculty at American River College in the Biology Department. Currently she teaches anatomy and physiology and microbiology to pre-nursing and mortuary science students at American River College. Starting in 2005, she began co-authoring Pearson’s PhysioEx: Laboratory Simulations in Physiology and has continued to co-author several versions of the software and lab manual. Dr. Smith has been awarded “Instructor of the Year” by the American River College Associated Students for her commitment to serving students, and she is a member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT).

Very useful textbook. I will need it for A&P 1 AND A&P 2. Came with the digital book and also the Practice Anatomy Lab which has been crucial for studying for lab practicals!

Arrived new, but I think I was suppose to get a CD with it. :/ also make sure this is the version your professor wants. I was suppose to buy the fetal pig version and started highlighting before I figured that out.

Scott Freeman

Scott Freeman received his Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Washington and was subsequently awarded an Alfred P. Sloan Postdoctoral Fellowship in Molecular Evolution at Princeton University. His current research focuses on the scholarship of teaching and learning and he recently published two papers on his work: (1) how active learning and peer teaching techniques increase student learning and improve performance in introductory biology (Freeman, S., E. O’Connor, J.W. Parks, M. Cunningham, D. Hurley, D. Haak, C. Dirks, and M.P. Wenderoth. 2007. Prescribed active learning increases performance in introductory biology. CBE–Life Sciences Education 6: 132-139.); and (2) how the levels of exam questions vary among introductory biology courses, standardized post-graduate entrance exams, and professional school courses (Zheng, A.Y., J.K. Kim Quillin

Illustrator, Kim Quillin, combines expertise in biology and information design to create lucid visual representations of biological principles. She received her B.A. in Biology at Oberlin College and her Ph.D. in Integrative Biology from the University of California, Berkeley (as a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow), and has taught undergraduate biology at both schools. Excellent Book (but don't buy the accompanying study guide)

I just took BIO 180 at the University of Washington for which this book was required. I have to say that although this was an expensive book, it is more than worth the money dropped. You can use it for all of the introductory Biology courses (180, 200, 220) and it's also a great book for satisfying personal curiosities about other topics in biology.

The best part about this book is that it is impeccably organized and thorough. You will not get lost in dry, confusing blocks of text and there are chapter summaries which are great to include in your notes. I used the book extensively for the course that I took. As I continue through the series I will definitely hold onto this book.

One quick note: the study guide is virtually a repetition of the chapter summaries and was not that helpful, so don't waste money on that. :o)

4th edition works as a cheap substitute!

If you want to save money go ahead and use the 4th edition of this book. You have to renumber the chapters so they match the 5th because there are a few differences there, but the content is the same. I did it and it worked great, saved me a ton!

This book matches the paper book pages exactly. It is easy to navigate through the manual.

It is nice not to have to carry around the cumbersome lab manual, but the Ebook is not interactive. I have to write all of my homework on a separate sheet of paper and cannot label the photos unless I draw them.

I bought the kindle version because it was a lot cheaper, but I definitely regret it because it has caused me so much more work and stress for class.

I would not recommend the kindle version of this book to someone who needs to write on the lab manual pages.

SELLER IS A LIFE SAVER!

I am a student and needed this book for school, so I purchased it through this seller. I later received an email saying I did not need the book so the seller allowed me to return the book with FREE SHIPPING! Then, when I had my first class my professor had changed and he wanted us to have the book for lab, so I ended up needing it, when i contacted the seller, he sent it back to me when he received it with NO CHARGE. Book was also in awesome condition, no marks and still in plastic wrapping!

great lab manual

I got this e-book and put it on my iPad and I love it. Nobody in my class will bring the lab book to class, but I always bring it on my tablet - since it weights almost nothing. The manual is huge (~1,000 pages) but so far I am pleased with the content.

Mario F. Triola is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Dutchess Community College, where he has taught statistics for over 30 years. Marty is the author of "Essentials of Statistics," "Elementary Statistics Using Excel," "Elementary Statistics Using the Graphing Calculator, "and he is a co-author of "Biostatistics for the Biological and Health Sciences, Statistical Reasoning for Everyday Life "and "Business Statistics. "He has written several manuals and workbooks for technology supporting statistics education. Outside of the classroom, Marty has been a speaker at many conferences and colleges. His consulting work includes the design of casino slot machines and fishing rods, and he has worked with attorneys in determining probabilities in paternity lawsuits, identifying salary inequities based on gender, analyzing disputed election results, analyzing medical data, and analyzing medical school surveys. Marty has testified as an expert witness in New York State Supreme Court. The Text and Academic Authors Association has awarded Mario F. Triola a "Texty" for Excellence for his work on "Elementary Statistics."

The editions get worse and worse

Our department has used Triola's statistics book for our large,
multi-section baby stats course for at least the past six years, and
it was through simple inertia that we adopted the 11th edition. Using
the earlier editions, I had almost begun to like Triola's
follow-the-recipe approach, and was able to make the course useful to
some of our students.

The 11th edition, however, is far worse than anything that came
before. The publishers have made numerous changes to format, style,
and content, and not one of them is for the better.

Format: The new edition has more clutter than ever in the margins.
Just about every page contains a distracting and usually irrelevant
sidebar, and color photographs (likewise irrelevant) push their way
into the text everywhere, as if the deisgners were trying to show off
their collection of pictures and their ability to flow text around
them. The actual text, when you can find it amid this clamoring
circus of marginal distractions, is marred by too-frequent changes in
background color and font size. It's difficult to read, and it's
difficult to orient oneself in the text, because the designers, while
splashing color and font changes all over the place, somehow managed
to make the chapter and section headings disappear. Just try to find
the beginning of Section 4-4. The decision to use a
proportional-space font in the tables of numbers on the Formulas and
Tables card suggests that the designer has never done any work with
tables of numbers.

Style: It's clear from the writing style that Dr. Triola is no longer
involved in the manufacture of the product that bears his name. (Or
else he had a very good copy editor in the earlier editions, who is
gone now.) A few paragraphs survive from the earlier editions, but
those that have been altered or inserted were written by someone
without the original author's grasp of English grammar. The new
author is also less careful about precise mathematical phrasing, and
is rather careless about things like referring to the probability of
an event that has already happened or the probability that a parameter
has a certain value. Many of the exercises now include a "tag-line"
question that is probably meant to help the students interpret the
results. A few of these questions are useful, but far more of them
require the student to speculate on or make judgments about subjects
with which he is almost certainly unfamiliar. In any case, they are
annoying, both to the student and to the instructor who must keep
repeating "Don't worry about that last part."

Content: How is it that later editions of the same book contain more
errors than earlier ones? Here are a few particularly nasty mistakes
that have been allowed into (or created for) the 11th edition:

Page 148, Exercise 9. "When rolling a single die at the Venetian
Casino in Las Vegas, there are 6 chances in 36 that the outcome is a
7." Does no one proofread these exercises? (Or does the Venetian
Casino really use 36-sided dice?)

Page 168, Exercise 17. The table supplied with the exercise is
missing its column headers. Again, this should have been caught by a
proofreader.

Page 433. There is an error in the presentation of the main formula
to be used in this section. And it's not just a slip-up in the
narrative text: The formula presented in the highlighted box is
incorrect. This is inexcusable. How could the proofreader have
missed it?

Page 484, Exercise 25. The exercise describes an observational study,
and concludes with the question "Should marijuana use be of concern to
college students?" The answer provided in the back of the book
suggests that the study shows a causal relationship between marijuana
use and impaired mental ability. This is in direct contradiction to
the rule that is so emphatically stated on pages 19 and 20: causality
may not be inferred from an observational study. The original author
would not have allowed such a blatant error to find its way into the
"officially correct" answers.

On the Formulas and Tables card -- the one that students use as a
reference when they're doing problems and taking exams -- the formula
for the chi-square test statistic is incorrect. How, then, are we to
trust anything else on this card? Where was the proofreader?

It does appear that Addison-Wesley, in the custom of the modern
producer of textbooks, rushed this edition through the mill, in order
to have all those overpriced copies on college bookstore shelves by
the beginning of the fall semester. In doing so, they apparently
omitted to have the book proofread or to give much thought to how
thoroughly the new design would discourage anyone from actually
reading it. Of course, it's possible that there's something even more
meretricious going on, and the publisher inserted the errors (all new
to the 11th edition) on purpose, so that the 11th edition could more
quickly be made obsolete, and replaced by an even more overpriced 12th
edition. I wouldn't put it past them.

could have been better ; the choice of examples are of poor taste; could have explained in a better way AND examples DON'T cover all the concepts BUT, the exercise has plethora of twisted questions. His solutions manual is a disgrace as it doesn't answer even problems. Shame on you Triola, you did a disservice to the students for decades by not providing answer solved solutions to all the exercise problems. Across the industry all the RATS that don't provide solutions to the even problems along with the odd problems in my humble opinion i s a as a whole a RAT.

The text book do show sign of wear it's not new like the description said in the inside you can see from the hard cover is torn pieces. The price was excellent for the book. Cd were new and it was deliver really fast thanks to prime fast shipping.
