About the Author
Fred Lutgens and Ed Tarbuck are professors emeriti from Illinois Central College. They have been good friends and colleagues since 1970.  Between them, they have more than 60 years of experience teaching geoscience to undergraduates, and both have been recognized with awards as excellent and inspiring professors.   
 
Lutgens and Tarbuck published their first college text, Earth Science, in 1976.  That book, winner of the McGuffy Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association, is now in its thirteenth edition.  In 1983, as the first edition of Earth was being prepared, renowned geoscience illustrator Dennis Tasa joined the author team.  Since then, the three have collaborated on more than 25 projects as the dominant author team franchise in the physical geosciences.

Great textbook to learn about the atmosphere!

I truly enjoyed this textbook. Meteorology and earth science can be difficult and confusing at times but this text did a great job explaining each topic thoroughly. The book is well-written and very informative. Make sure to take notes and reread a section or two to make sure you understand the given concepts.

About the Author
Bob Blitzer is a native of Manhattan and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with dual majors in mathematics and psychology (minor: English literature) from the City College of New York. His unusual combination of academic interests led him toward a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Miami and a doctorate in behavioral sciences from Nova University. Bob is most energized by teaching mathematics and has taught a variety of mathematics courses at Miami-Dade College for nearly 30 years. He has received numerous teaching awards, including Innovator of the Year from the League for Innovations in the Community College, and was among the first group of recipients at Miami-Dade College for an endowed chair based on excellence in the classroom. About the Author
Marvin Bittinger For over thirty years Professor Marvin L. Bittinger has been teaching math at the university level. Since 1968 he has been employed as a professor of mathematics education at Indiana University - Purdue University at Indianapolis. Professor Bittinger has authored 159 publications on topics ranging from Basic Mathematics to Algebra and Trigonometry to Brief Calculus. He received his BA in Mathematics from Manchester College in 1963 and his PhD in Mathematics Education from Purdue University in 1968. Special honors include being Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy and being elected to the Manchester College Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1999. His hobbies include hiking, baseball, golf, and bowling and he enjoys membership in the Professional Bowler's Association and the Society for the Advancement of Baseball Research. Professor Bittinger has also had the privilege of speaking at a recent mathematics convention giving a lecture entitled, Baseball and Mathematics. In addition, he also has an interest in philosophy and theology, in particular, apologetics. Professor Bittinger currently lives in Carmel, Indiana with his wife Elaine. He has two grown and married sons, Lowell and Chris, and three grandchildren. Neal Brand is the Departmental Chair and Professor of Mathematics at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, where he has taught since 1983. Before teaching at UNT, he taught at Ohio State University and Loyola University of Chicago, and he was employed as a scientist at McDonnell-Douglass Corporation. He received his BS in Mathematics from Purdue University in 1974, and his MS and PhD in Mathematics from Stanford Universityin 1976 and 1978 respectively. He has authored or co-authored 26 refereed articles that have appeared in the mathematical literature. Dr. Brand is a member of the Mathematical Association of America and the American Mathematical Society. Outside of mathematics, his interests include woodworking and carpentry. He is a founding board member and current board president of Habitat for Humanity of Denton County. He lives in Denton, Texas with his wife Shari. He also has two grown daughters. John A. Quintanilla is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, where he has taught since 1996. He received both his BS and MS in Mathematics from Stanford University in 1992, and he received his PhD in Civil of Engineering and Operations Research from Princeton University in 1997. He has authored or co-authored 18 refereed articles that have appeared in the scientific literature. Dr. Quintanilla has been the recipient of multiple teaching awards. In 2004, he received the University of North Texas President's Council Teaching Award. In 2005, he was conferred the Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics Award by the Texas Section of the Mathematical Association of America. Dr. Quintanilla is a member of the Mathematical Association of America and the Association of Christians in the Mathematical Sciences. His outside interests include golf, volleyball, softball, and Bible study. He lives in Denton, Texas with his wife Sandra and their daughter Sarah.

Judy Beecher has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Indiana University and a graduate degree in mathematics from Purdue University. She has taught at both the high school and college levels with many years of developmental math and precalculus teaching experience at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis. In addition to her career in textbook publishing, she spends time traveling, enjoying her grandchildren, and promoting charity projects for a children's camp. Judy Penna received her undergraduate degree in mathematics from Kansas State University and her graduate degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois. Since then, she has taught at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis and at Butler University, and continues to focus on writing quality textbooks for undergraduate mathematics students. In her free time she likes to travel, read, knit and spend time with her children. Marvin Bittinger For over thirty-eight years, Professor Marvin L. Bittinger has been teaching math at the university level. Since 1968, he has been employed at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis, and is now professor emeritus of mathematics education. Professor Bittinger has authored over 190 publications on topics ranging from basic mathematics to algebra and trigonometry to applied calculus. He received his BA in mathematics from Manchester College and his PhD in mathematics education from Purdue University. Special honors include Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy and his election to the Manchester College Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1999. His hobbies include hiking in Utah, baseball, golf, and bowling. ProfessorBittinger has also had the privilege of speaking at many mathematics conventions, most recently giving a lecture entitled "Baseball and Mathematics." In addition, he also has an interest in philosophy and theology, in particular, apologetics. Professor Bittinger currently lives in Carmel, Indiana with his wife Elaine. He has two grown and married sons, Lowell and Chris, and four granddaughters.

Disappointing

I really wanted to like this book. The author appears to be deeply thoughtful, observant, well-read and experienced. The book is attractively designed with many color examples of infographics and other visual displays.

But the ideas are incomplete. For instance, the author goes to great pains in chapter 3 to construct a "visualization wheel" - an analytical framework for categorizing your infographic. More functional or decorative? More literal or abstract? Etc. I was getting excited! But the author just kinds of leaves it at that. It's rarely referenced again in the book and turns out not to be a very useful planning tool at all. So why did we spend an entire chapter on this?

Similarly, chapters 5-7 go deep into understanding how vision works: eye saccades, the blind spot, guessing what the picture is without full information, etc. Interesting stuff, but again, it doesn't lead to any great insights. Nothing that couldn't have been expressed without the optometry lesson.

Still, there are some useful ideas in here. Gestalt principles are important. The quick review of Bill Cleveland's research on more accurate graphing techniques. When to use detailed versus abstract imagery. All good ideas.

But there just weren't enough of them. And too many chapters that went deep into some topic but didn't bring back any good insights.

So, 3 stars for some good ideas. But this book should have been a lot better.

A comprehensive look at an important field

In The Functional Art, Alberto Cairo has written one of the most comprehensive books on information design that I have ever seen. He starts by laying a foundation that makes the case for information graphics and visualization as a "functional art" -- that function being helping us humans make sense of the world and make more thoughtful, rational decisions. He makes the case for not only clear, minimal representations of data but also recognizes the roles that emotion, fun, perception and cognition play in our understanding of visual phenomena.

There's a fair amount of brain science in this book -- just the right amount, in my opinion, for anyone wanting to visually explore and express information and ideas. But Cairo follows the brain science with excellent practical knowledge and wisdom from the discipline of information design. With plenty of examples, case studies and interviews with expert practitioners, he manages to cover quite a lot of ground, from newspapers to magazines to academia and more. He also tackles the emerging and important area of interactive explanation, covering topics like how we perceive motion, the role of feedback and more.

Full-color illustrations throughout are to be expected in a book of this kind, and there is an ample supply of them. But in addition, the book comes with a DVD-based video course.

All in all this is an excellent overview of a topic that will only become more relevant and important in the coming years.

A should read

This book written by someone from the news magazine corner throws a new light on data visualizations and as such is a should (almost: must read) for everyone dealing with Dashboard Design or data visualizations. The books offers many examples from the real world, but: sadly the book format is definately too small for many of the infographics. A standard paperback size (closer to American Letter size or European Din A4 size would have served better). Sadly, some of the infographics are labeled in Spanish or Portugese, which is not suprrising knowing Alberto's background (Spain/Brasil). Still, it would have been nice if all infographics had been translated in English.

About the Author
Bob Blitzer is a native of Manhattan and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with dual majors in mathematics and psychology (minor: English literature) from the City College of New York. His unusual combination of academic interests led him toward a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Miami and a doctorate in behavioral sciences from Nova University. Bob’s love for teaching mathematics was nourished for nearly 30 years at Miami Dade College, where he received numerous teaching awards, including Innovator of the Year from the League for Innovations in the Community College and an endowed chair based on excellence in the classroom. In addition to his Developmental Algebra Series, Bob has written textbooks covering college algebra, algebra and trigonometry, precalculus, and liberal arts mathematics, all published by Pearson Education. When not secluded in his Northern California writer’s cabin, Bob can be found hiking the beaches and trails of Point Reyes National Seashore, and tending to the chores required by his beloved entourage of horses, chickens, and irritable roosters.

Rate the book not the shipping!

This is a fine book for students who want a stiff course in algebra. The book is challenging and holds no punches in its level of difficulty. However, the student who takes the time to do the problems and read some of the examples will have the algebra that they need for pre-calculus, trigonometry, or calculus. Rational expressions, logarithms, difficult factoring problems, quadratic equations, conic sections, difference quotients, and radicals equations are all present in this book. It is the lack of mastery of these concepts that hold students back in their calculus classes. Blitzer will call your bluff if you are lacking and get you up to speed.

To the other reviewers: Stop rating the shipping of this book!!!! This is just foolish. Rate the book! I am so sick and tired of erroneous rating on amazon!

No corners cut

A lot of work went into the production of this book. It's physically well made, and very thoughtfully laid out. It's designed to teach algebra, and it seems that more thought has gone into achieving that goal than any other book on the subject I've read. One example being, after a concept it laid out for you, an example is given, and then a practice problem for you to solve, and, here's the great part.. The answer is thoroughly explained right below the problem. If there are multiple answers to the question, the key part of the question is repeated in the answer. I can't stand having to go to the back of the book for the answer. There's a Pre-Algebra chapter b4 Chapter 1, and you really should already be familiar with Pre-Algebra concepts before tackling this book, but, the Pre-Algebra chapter might be enough if you've had algebra before, or you're really intelligent with Math naturally.

Examples and problems constructed by inexperienced students

I have a master's degree in Electrical Engineering. I tutor students who are using this book in a community college course. In layout and in format, the book is very good. The concepts are presented in logical order, and the principles are usually explained well.

My problem is that the examples and the end-of-chapter problems are full of errors. Example: Section P.6, "Rational Expressions" presents several examples to define the domain of an expression. Most of these conclude with the incorrect domain. This kind of sloppy editing can leave the student totally confused about a concept that is all-important to understand later concepts, such as systems of equations and series summations.

I fully believe that the author left the basic book construction in the hands of inexperienced students. Its too bad that he did not bother with some double-checking of the work.

About the Author
Marge Lial (late) became interested in math at an early age–it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, was affiliated with American River College. An avid reader and traveler, her travel experiences often found their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She was particularly interested in archeology; trips to various digs and ruin sites produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan. We dedicate the new editions of the paperback developmental math series to Marge in honor of her contributions to the field in which she helped thousands of students succeed.

 

When John Hornsby enrolled as an undergraduate at Louisiana State University, he was uncertain whether he wanted to study mathematics education or journalism. His ultimate decision was to become a teacher, but after twenty-five years of teaching at the high school and university levels and fifteen years of writing mathematics textbooks, both of his goals have been realized. His love for both teaching and for mathematics is evident in his passion for working with students and fellow teachers as well. His specific professional interests are recreational mathematics, mathematics history, and incorporating graphing calculators into the curriculum. John's personal life is busy as he devotes time to his family (wife Gwen, and sons Chris, Jack, and Josh). He has been a rabid baseball fan all of his life. John's other hobbies include numismatics (the study of coins) and record collecting. He loves the music of the 1960s and has an extensive collection of the recorded works of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

 

A native Midwesterner, Terry McGinnis received her Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education with a concentration in Mathematics from Iowa State University. She has taught elementary and middle school mathematics, and developed and implemented the curriculum used with her students. Terry has been involved in college mathematics publishing for over 20 years, working with a variety of authors on textbooks in developmental mathematics and precalculus. After working behind the scenes on many of the Lial/Hornsby textbooks and supplements for over 10 years, Terry joined Margaret Lial and John Hornsby in 2002 as coauthor of their developmental mathematics series that includes Introductory Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and Introductory and Intermediate Algebra. When not working, Terry enjoys spinning at a local health club, walking, and reading fiction. She is the devoted mother of two sons, Andrew and Tyler.

RENT THIS BOOK

My college book store charges 215.00 to buy this book, and 150 to rent it. I rented it from Amazon for the entire semester and it only cost me 18.98 including tax and shipping. Can't beat that! And when the book arrived it looks pretty much new! Return shipping at the end of the semester is free. Best deal around for a college student!!
