About the Author
Michael L. Cain taught introductory biology and a broad range of other biology courses at New Mexico State University and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for thirteen years. He is now writing full time and is affiliated with Bowdoin College in Maine. Dr. Cain has published dozens of scientific articles on topics such as genetic variation in plants, insect foraging behavior, long-distance seed dispersal, and factors that promote speciation in crickets. Dr. Cain is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, and awards, including the Pew Charitable Trust Teacher-Scholar Fellowship and research grants from the National Science Foundation.

Robert Jackson is a retired member of the faculty of the Information Systems Department at Brigham Young University. He has researched, published, and taught in the areas of object-oriented systems development, e-commerce, Web systems, project management, and information systems education. Bringing a wealth of real-world business experience and technical expertise to this book, Dr. Jackson is currently self-employed as a principal in several new e-commerce ventures, where he practices firsthand the analysis, design, and business principles presented in the Seventh Edition. Great tool to utilize alongside the corresponding book! I only used the study guide when I needed further guidance towards a chapter I was stuck on such as Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration. I can see myself using this book as review for my DAT (Dental Admissions Test) in the near future.

If you develop Joomla templates, you need this book

Finally, a book on Joomla templates written by a member of the official Joomla project, Angie Radtke.

If you have used Joomla, you already know Angie's work. She designed and developed the Beeze templates that come installed with every Joomla distribution since Joomla 1.5.

This book does a great job looking under the hood of Joomla's template architecture. She goes over how to tweak templates with CSS, how to use template overrides, a chapter covering MooTools basics, and how to modify the Beeze templates that come with Joomla. If you already develop Joomla templates, you need to buy this book because it will greatly expand your skill-set.

I have been developing custom Joomla templates since 2007 and this book taught me several new tricks, like how MooTools works, create better error pages and best ways to modify the CSS used in Joomla error messages, etc.

What the book doesn't do is provide step-by-step instructions on how to create a Joomla template from scratch. (Although there are plenty of good online tutorials that can show you how.) I would not recommend this book to Joomla newbies and folks who do not have a good understanding of CSS and HTML. You don't need to know PHP and JavaScript to get a lot from this book, but it certainly helps if you do.

Overall a great book that deserves a place in every Joomla developer's library.

Agonizing - a definite "skip"

Agonizing.

This book is about Joomla templates, right? It says so right on the cover. So, out of 278 pages of real "stuff" (excluding introduction, index, appendix), why are the first 90 pages devoted to everything but Templates?

Author Angie Radtke has great qualifications, but if I wanted to know her opinion about website accessibility, color balance, PHP basics, CSS and HTML basics, the aesthetics of font selection, and general website design advice, I'd have bought a book about, oh say, "Website Design."

Here are some things I just don't need to be told in a book about Joomla templates:
- "In many cases the choice of colors is determined in advance by the corporate design of the client."
- "People who are blind tend to have well-developed acoustic as well as tactile senses..."
- "Firebug is one of the most glorious inventions for template designers."

With that said, the other 180 pages of the book do a pretty good job of explaining the role of templates and how to use them. The last 60 pages walk the user though a productive, detailed exercise of designing the front end of a Joomla website and illustrate template use in a rewarding way. If anything, those 60 pages are the nugget of value in this book. (In fact, if I had to take a guess, I'd say Ms. Radtke wrote the last 180 pages, was told by the publisher to make it longer to justify the target size and price of the book, and that she then added the first third, but that's just me.)

I took my lumps on this one and proceeded to the Joomla "Programming" book in the same series, which I liked very much, so I haven't searched more for templates-only guides on Joomla.

An odd mix of the elementary and the complex

I'm a beginning level web developer who has created a basic Joomla website but wanted to learn how to customize a template for increased style control. I've looked at several Joomla! templates and found that they are typically composed of many different files, making it almost impossible to figure out where to start*. I was hoping that this book on Joomla templates might explain how these are typically set up, but was disappointed in this.

Many rather basic topics are covered in this book, but Radtke often inexplicably uses advanced undefined terms and concepts in the midst of elementary explanations, leaving beginners in the dust. For instance, on page 37,in the context of the introduction of HTML5, Radtke says "The new semantically significant elements are particularly interesting," with no further explanation (I have a clue, but this could have been stated in much plainer language). On page 38, when she explains that css statements can be added in external files (already knew that!), she provides a code sample to accomplish this, but doesn't mention where this code would be placed among the many template files. A brief explanation of how style sheets are integrated into a Joomla website would have been nice here. It is also unfortunate that while this book was copyrighted in 2013, it does not discuss either of the default templates packaged with Joomla!3 (released in 2013), but instead deals with the old Beez2.

As there are not very many reference books available for Joomla!, this is still a useful reference for those of us who prefer to learn by reading. The table of contents shows the broad scope of this book, and dutiful perseverance will still reward relative beginners with some information useful at that level. However, it could (and should) have been so much better....

*A refreshing exception is Jaxstorm-Blue, with all of its css in one file, making it a good learner's tool.

About the Author

Henry S. Warren, Jr., has had a fifty-year career with IBM, spanning from the IBM 704 to the PowerPC and beyond. He has worked on various military command and control systems and on the SETL (SET Language) project under Jack Schwartz. Since 1973, Hank has been with IBM’s Research Division, focusing on compilers and computer architectures. He currently works on a supercomputer project aimed at an exaflop. Hank received his Ph.D. in computer science from the Courant Institute at New York University.

Very, very useful

Well written and (relatively) concise book. It contains numerous techniques for efficiently managing binary data and various examinations of bitwise arithmetic.

The algorithms explained are detailed and useful. I've used a number of them 'in anger' and they've worked perfectly. I haven't come across any other book that addresses the field as well as this one does.

excellent book of hacks

The book is full of useful bit-twiddling tricks. How do you quickly count the number of bits set in a 2's complement long integer? If you can't imagine caring, then this book isn't for you, but if you need to write fast, low-level code on occasion, the price of the book will be repaid the first time you find a clear explanation of some trick, instead of having to figure it out for yourself. It's a more polished, restricted version of Hackmem, which I also recommend.

Hacker's Delight first edition was resourceful. This second edition even more so.

The bit manipulation chapters have lots of hints on how to code without branches.

There are some "scary" math on later chapters but you can ignore it.

About the Author
Richard De Veaux holds degrees in Civil Engineering (B.S.E. Princeton), Mathematics (A.B.Princeton), Physical Education (M.A. Stanford; Specialization in Dance) and Statistics (Ph.D., Stanford). He has taught at the Wharton School, the Princeton University School of Engineering, and, since 1994, has been a professor in the Mathematics and Statistics Department of Williams College. He has won numerous teaching awards including a "Lifetime Award for Dedication and Excellence in Teaching" from the Engineering Council at Princeton. He has won both the Wilcoxon and Shewell awards (twice) from the American Society for Quality and was elected fellow of the American Statistical Association in 1998. Dick was Program Chair for the 2001 Joint Statistics Meeting in Atlanta (Aug. 2001). Dick has been a consultant for nearly 20 years for such companies as Hewlett-Packard, Alcoa, First USA Bank, Dupont, Pillsbury, Rohm and Haas, General Electric, and Chemical Bank.

Paul Velleman has taught statistics at Cornell University for 22 years. He holds an A.B. from Dartmouth College in Mathematics and Social Science, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton University in Statistics, where he studied with John Tukey. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, past Chair of its Statistical Computing Section, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has been awarded the EDUCOM medal for innovative uses of computers in teaching statistics. He is the co-author of the book ABC's of Exploratory Data Analysis. He is the author and designer of the multimedia statistics CD-ROM, ActivStats, and the developer of the award-winning statistics program, Data Desk, and theinternet site, Data And Story Library (DASL), which provides datasets for teaching statistics.

Richard D. De Veaux is an internationally known educator and lecturer. He has taught at the Wharton School and the Princeton University School of Engineering, where he won a "Lifetime Award for Dedication and Excellence in Teaching." Since 1994, he has been Professor of Statistics at Williams College. During 2006-2007 he returned to Princeton as the William R. Kenan Visiting Professor for Distinguished Teaching. Dick is also well known in industry, where over 20 years he has consulted for such companies as Hewlett-Packard, Alcoa, DuPont, Pillsbury, General Electric, and American Express. Because of some conversations he had with Mickey Hart while Hart was doing research for his book, Planet Drum, Dick has often been called the "Official Statistician for the Grateful Dead." Dick holds degrees from Princeton University in Civil Engineering (B.S.E.) and Mathematics (A.B.) and from Stanford University in Dance Education (M.A.) and Statistics (Ph.D.) where he studied with Persi Diaconis. His research focuses on the analysis of large data sets and data mining in science and industry. In his spare time he is an avid cyclist and swimmer. He also is the founder and bass for the "Diminished Faculty," an a cappella Doo-Wop quartet at Williams College. He was once a professional dancer and teaches Modern Dance during Winter Study at Williams. Dick is the father of four children. Paul F. Velleman has an international reputation for innovative Statistics education. Out of class, Paul sings baritone in a barbershop quartet. He is the father of two boys. David E. Bock taught mathematics at Ithaca High School for 35 years. He has taught Statistics at Ithaca High School, Tompkins-Cortland Community College, Ithaca College, and Cornell University. Dave has won numerous teaching awards, including the MAA's Edyth May Sliffe Award for Distinguished High School Mathematics Teaching (twice), Cornell University's Outstanding Educator Award (three times), and has been a finalist for New York State Teacher of the Year. Dave holds degrees from the University at Albany in Mathematics (B.A.) and Statistics/Education (M.S.) Dave has been a reader for the AP Statistics exam, serves as a Statistics consultant to the College Board, and leads workshops and institutes for AP Statistics teachers. He is currently K-12Education and Outreach Coordinator and a senior lecturer for the Mathematics Department at Cornell University. Dave relaxes by biking and hiking. He and his wife have enjoyed many days camping across Canada and through the Rockies. They have a son, a daughter, and twin granddaughters.

I like the loose leaf version of the book

Came with new working code for MyStatLab. I like the loose leaf version of the book, as it is easy to take out pages that you need, or have a couple pages on the desk so you don't have to flip back and forth between pages.

The Pearson program also gives you access to the electronic version of the book.

About the Author
Trujillo-Palomar College

"Harold V. Thurman." Hal Thurman retired in May 1994, after 24 years of teaching in the Earth Sciences Department of Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California. Interest in geology led to a bachelor's degree from Oklahoma A & M University, followed by seven years working as a petroleum geologist, mainly in the Gulf of Mexico, where his interest in the oceans developed. He earned a master's degree from California State University at Los Angeles and then joined the Earth Sciences faculty at Mt. San Antonio College. Other books that Hal has coauthored include "Essentials of Oceanography" (with Alan Trujillo) and a marine biology textbook. He has also written articles on the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic Oceans for the 1994 edition of "World Book Encyclopedia" and served as a consultant on the National Geographic publication, "Realms of the Sea." He still enjoys going to sea on vacations with his wife Iantha.

"Alan P. Trujillo." Al Trujillo teaches at Palomar Community College in San Marcos, California, where he is co-Director of the Oceanography Program and Chair of the Earth Sciences Department. He received his bachelor's degree in geology from the University of California at Davis and his master's degree in geology from Northern Arizona University, afterward working for several years in industry as a developmental geologist, hydrogeologist, and computer specialist. A1 began teaching in the Earth Sciences Department at Palomar in 1990 and in 1997 was awarded Palomar's Distinguished Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching. He has coauthored "Essentials of Oceanography" with Hal Thurman and is a contributing author for other Earth science textbooks, including "Earth,"7th edition and "Earth Science," 10th edition. In addition to writing and teaching, Al works as a naturalist and lecturer aboard natural history expedition vessels in Alaska and the Sea of Cortez/Baja California. His research interests include beach processes, sea cliff erosion, and computer applications in oceanography. A1 and his wife, Sandy, have two children, Karl and Eva.

Shedding light on the deep

This book taught me a lot about the ocean, but the earth as well. It gives a very solid base from which to understand further chapters. I really enjoyed taking an Oceanography course and it helped me to understand that to be an oceanographer now, the future of that kind of a career lies in studying the very deepest parts of the ocean not easily studied. I am going to keep this book because I feel it deserves a few more reads even though my class is over now. If you buy it make sure to use the online options for test preparation and watch the web videos it helped me very much.

Fun to Read

Great book that is both informative and fun to read. Easy to understand and written with a layman's perspective. Great sidebars titled "Students Sometimes Ask" questions and answers. Good pictures and graphs to support the text. Not like other science textbooks...I really enjoyed this book.

Overall goood textbook

This textbook was bought for my oceans and atmospheres class. The book worked well overall, but was a bit dense in places for reading through (could just be subject matter though). Not to boring of writing, just lots of material to get through. But for an introduction to oceanography it is great, providing a lot of great information.

About the Author
Jeremy Likness is a principal consultant at Wintellect, LLC. He has worked with enterprise applications for more than 20 years, 15 of those focused on web-based applications using the Microsoft stack. An early adopter of Silverlight 3.0, he worked on countless enterprise Silverlight solutions, including the back-end health monitoring system for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and Microsoft’s own social network monitoring product called “Looking Glass.” He is both a consultant and project manager at Wintellect and works closely with Fortune 500 companies, including Microsoft. He is a three-year Microsoft MVP and was declared MVP of the Year in 2010. He has also received Microsoft’s Community Contributor award for his work with Silverlight. Jeremy is the author of Designing Silverlight Business Applications: Best Practices for Using Silverlight Effectively in the Enterprise (Addison-Wesley). ok to start but not too deep

This is more like an introduction to Windows 8 App. You will get a history lesson of Windows development through the years, the book started nicely with the Image Helper app in a tutorial like fashion. The example throws an error (if you type the example as it is in the book), but author provided updated code. I got excited reading this chapter because of this tutorial step by step example, and I thought the book will continue this way all the way to the end, but no, that is it. Then you get random examples, author tells you to open the code and explains a few areas, but not the whole picture, so you keep wondering how this or how that works.

You need to read the example code and try to understand how things are connected. Especially things like the Visual State Manager on a Windows 8 app (Filled, Snapped, FullScreen), it looks like the app magically changes the view, but you have repeated code for each state and then things get hidden or displayed (there are some mentions, and you can figure that out reading the full code), but only devoted like 2 pages to the VSM, something that is very important. Doesn't give examples about doing something like this from scratch or how to modify the built-in templates. XAML section was brief, I know there are other XAML books, but there are many changes and specifics to the Windows RT apps, that I believe required more explanation than the one given. He touches the topics briefly, and lets you know that the option is there, but it doesn't go deep into almost any topic.

Another thing is that with the downloaded code examples, they include many custom helper classes. This is ok, but when you are trying to follow the book pages, and going through the code snippets, then if you are trying to write another sample app by yourself to do the proof of concept for each feature, then you cannot find those classes because they are not part of the core WinRT framework. So you need to copy and paste their own helper classes into your project. If instead you want to follow the book with the distributed examples, they only make sense, if before reading the book chapters, you have studied the downloaded code previously. This is fine again, but when you are trying to learn, this creates some confusion. They should have demonstrated all the features using the built-in classes and not custom classes.

There are many things that are mentioned and you get some paragraphs explaining more or less how they should work, but again very superficial

I am not saying this book is bad, it is an introduction and light foundation, but you need more compelling and tutorial like content to really learn. If you want to have an idea about how Win 8 apps work you can read this book. If you really need to write and understand in a detailed way how everything works and REALLY LEARN then get another book.

During the holiday season, I received the Building Windows 8 Apps with C# and XAML by Jeremy Likness. Holidays are the perfect time to read books! Before starting the book, I was curious to know if it would be useful to me, since I created my first Windows 8 app (Canadian Developer Connection) earlier this year where I included a lot of Windows 8 features. It turned out that I was very satisfied with the number of things I learned.

The reader should have extreme confidence in the content of the book, given the author's solid experience and background.

The book starts with a simple app that is more than just a "Hello World" app. After the first app, a beginner would be happy to read and learn more.

The author took the time to explain some "under the cover" mechanisms of the new Windows 8 Store app world. Yes, the Registry is still present more than ever. This information is very much appreciated.

Reading about the controls, the application lifecycle, the way to save data, the charms, the packaging, the deploying and more, the reader will get a complete picture of how to take advantage of Windows 8 features.

One of the most important aspects about programming is testing. Even though this aspect is not only related to Windows 8 development, the author dedicates a whole chapter to testing and the high importance of doing unit tests. The experiences that he wrote about proved that even more. For all levels of developers, this chapter is a good reminder of one of the aspects we tend to push aside.

Throughout the book, there is code that is available open-source. The book is a great companion to the provided code and some of the code can even be used in your own apps.

As for the physical aspects of the book, the font size is easy on the eyes. The book could have been a bit better if there were colors in the diagrams, but undoubtedly the price would have then been higher.

In conclusion, the book covers all the new cool features of the Windows 8 Store apps. If you know C# and you want a quick start on Windows 8 App development, I recommend this excellent book.
