About the Author

Dr. Robert M. Sherfield is currently a Professor in the School of Arts and Letters at The College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is a nationally recognized educator, writer, and speaker having spent the past 27 years working with faculty development, first year student success programs, student motivation, and retention.

An award-winning educator, Robb was named Educator of the Year at the College of Southern Nevada. He twice received the Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award from The University of South Carolina at Union and has received numerous other awards and nominations for classroom instruction and advisement.

About the Author

William E. Cain is Mary Jewett Gaiser Professor of English at Wellesley College. Among his many publications is a monograph on American literary and cultural criticism, 1900-1945, in The Cambridge History of American Literature, Vol. 5 (2003). He is a co-editor of the Norton Anthology of Literary Theory and Criticism (2nd ed., 2010), and, with Sylvan Barnet, he has co-authored a number of books on literature and composition. His recent publications include essays on Ralph Ellison, Ernest Hemingway, George Orwell, Shakespeare, Edith Wharton, and the painter Mark Rothko.

Alice McDermott is the author of the forthcoming novel Someone and six previous novels, including After This; Child of My Heart; Charming Billy, winner of the 1998 National Book Award; and At Weddings and Wakes, all published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. That Night, At Weddings and Wakes, and After This were all finalists for the Pulitzer Prize. McDermott lives with her family outside Washington, D.C.

Lance E. Newman is Professor of English and Environmental Studies at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, where he teaches Early American Literature, Environmental Literature, and Creative Writing. He has also worked as a river guide for more than two decades, leading rafting trips in Southeastern Utah and in Grand Canyon. He is the author of The Grand Canyon Reader (University of California Press, 2011) and Our Common Dwelling: Henry Thoreau, Transcendentalism, and the Class Politics of Nature (Palgrave, 2005). With Joel Pace and Chris Keonig-Woodyard, he co-edited Transatlantic Romanticism: An Anthology of British, American, and Canadian Literature, 1767-1867 (Longman, 2006). He co-produced the documentary film Canyonlands: Edward Abbey and the Great American Desert (2011) with Roderick Coover. Newman’s poems have appeared in many print and web magazines, and he is the author of two poetry chapbooks, Come Kanab (Dusi-e/chaps Kollectiv, 2007) and 3by3by3 (Beard of Bees, 2010), both available free on the Web.

Hilary E. Wyss is Hargis Professor of American Literature at Auburn University, where she teaches courses in early American literature, American studies, and Native American studies. She is the author of over a dozen articles and book chapters as well as three books, including English Letters and Indian Literacies: Reading, Writing, and New England Missionary Schools, 1750-1830 (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2012); Early Native Literacies in New England: a Documentary and Critical Anthology (University of Massachusetts Press, 2008, co-edited with Kristina Bross); and Writing Indians: Literacy, Christianity, and Native Community in Early America (University of Massachusetts Press, 2000). She has won teaching awards at Auburn University as well as national research grants to support her work. She has served on the editorial board of the journal Early American Literature and was most recently the President of the Society of Early Americanists.

Horrid book

If you're going to be using this book on MyMathLab/MathXL then take my advice - don't waste any more money to buy the book. The entirety of the book is available as an ebook included with your subscription code.

This book is a heavy, huge waste of space. There is little to be learned from the book, as it is essentially a massive topic outline with an occasional example and copious self-assessment type questions. The questions which appear at the end of every section are page fillers - most of the work you do on an online class will render all those questions dead space. The online "View an Example" button is (in the absence of a good teacher/tutor) the only thing that teaches you how to do a problem, which shows you step by step (most of the time) how to solve that type of problem. Occasionally, you'll be quizzed on something that is not explained in the book - or explained in such a high level that no solution can be derived that will help you in practice. The answers to all the hundreds of pages of questions are not explained, only given. This leads me to believe that those working purely from the book without an online component are just as, if not worse off, than the online folks.

Students will have little choice in the selection of this book - it is my hope that teachers will see these reviews and choose a more helpful book. If all you care about as a teacher is hitting topic points, this book will make that painfully clear, but it will do your students no service as a learning tool. At the very least, make the book optional where online access applies.

Lastly, if you are considering the loose leaf book, stop considering. The book is useless enough as it is, but the ultimate price of saving the few bucks in binding is that loose leaf has literally no resale value. This will make you likely ineligible for book buyback and selling online is risky since nobody knows what pages may or may not be missing or what condition they're in after not having a binding. If you simply must have this book, look to a bound or electronic rental where applicable. This is one of those cases where nearly any price of rental below selling price will be a worthwhile transaction.

A great reference

I wish some of the examples were a little clearer in this book, but let's face it. You HAVE to buy this book for your math class. I think it's a good book because of it's breadth. Many topics are covered so I imagine it will be quite useful to look back over during my next few semesters in calculus.

About the Author

Nora Hebert, Ph.D. teaches undergraduate courses in Anatomy and Physiology at Red Rocks Community College near Denver, Colorado. Although most of her students are undergraduates, primarily interested in the allied health professions, Nora has also taught graduate-level Human Physiology for the College’s Physician Assistant Program.

Nora is an active faculty member at Red Rocks, serving on the faculty senate, the honors program committee, and the admissions and executive committees for the Physician Assistant Program. She is also part of the College’s Campus Green Initiative.

Among her many academic projects, Nora has consulted in the development of an interactive virtual knee, known as the Explorable Virtual Human, with the Center for Human Simulation at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. She has also been involved with the Visible Human Dissector program, advising K-12 teachers and postsecondary instructors on how best to implement the Dissector in their classrooms. Nora has been deeply involved in the development of Practice Anatomy Lab, as coauthor of versions 2.0 and 3.0. She is also the author of over 60 A&P Flix animations covering muscle physiology, neurophysiology, and muscle origins, actions, insertions, and innervations.

Nora received a Ph.D. in Endocrinology from the University of California at Berkeley.

Ruth E. Heisler is a senior instructor in the Department of Integrative Physiology at the University of Colorado at Boulder where she teaches and coordinates several courses, including Human Anatomy, Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy, and Forensic Biology. She has been an instructor at the University of Colorado for more than 15 years.

At the University of Colorado, Ruth has worked extensively with the Science Education Initiative to improve both the teaching and understanding of scientific material at the undergraduate level. In addition, she has been involved in academic outreach through workshops with the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and the Biological Sciences Initiative. She has been a consultant on projects with the Center for Human Simulation, working with data generated through the Visible Human Project.

Ruth has been deeply involved in the development of Practice Anatomy Lab, as coauthor of versions 2.0 and 3.0. She is also author of a custom laboratory manual developed for a large, cadaver-based human anatomy lab.

Ruth received her B.S. in Biology from the University of Minnesota, and her M.A. in Biology from the University of Colorado.

Jett Chinn is an instructor of Human Anatomy in the Science and Technology Division of Cañada College (Redwood City, CA) and also the Life and Earth Sciences Department at the College of Marin (Kentfield, CA).

Jett has more than 20 years of experience teaching Human Anatomy at institutions including San Francisco State University, California College of Podiatric Medicine, and Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has also taught first-year dental students at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine.

Jett received a B.A. in general biology from San Francisco State University.

Karen M. Krabbenhoft, Ph.D. is a senior lecturer in the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. During her 20-year career, Karen’s focus has been on teaching students at all levels of their educational process, including undergraduate, physician assistant, and medical students. She has been recognized by the University with several awards, including two Medical Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Awards for the Basic Sciences (1998, 2007), the Dean’s Teaching Award (2000), and the Gender Equity Award (1998). Most recently, Karen was selected by the graduating class to receive the Pre-Clinical Teaching Award in 2011.

Karen earned her Ph.D. in Anatomy from the University of Wisconsin.

Olga Malakhova, M.D. is an assistant scholar in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville. She has been teaching first-, second-, and fourth-year medical students, as well as several Clinical Residency programs, at the University of Florida for the past 20 years.

Olga’s teaching excellence has been recognized by several awards, including six Exemplary Teacher awards from the University of Florida. She was also recognized as a Master Educator by the University’s Medical Education Faculty Development Program (2006).

Olga received her M.D. from Odessa Medical Institute in Ukraine, and her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the Brain Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in Moscow.

Lifesaver for my Anatomy Practicals

I wasn't required to purchase this atlas book for my Anatomy class but my instructor highly recommended purchasing this atlas, and let me say, it was the best choice I made. It helped me study so much for my Anatomy class. It shows muscle labeling, bone labeling, cat Anatomy, it has everything you need to help you better study for your lab practical. The way I see it, I am keeping this atlas along while I continue my studies and will definitely not be selling this atlas book. If you are pursuing a career in the medical field, definitely hang on to this atlas, it is very helpful.

and skeletal bones and muscles are so detailed and easy to pin point specific areas of study

I ordered this book after a fellow AP 1 student, in Open Lab, showed me the detailed photographs and models of the Human Anatomy along with models and pictures of dissections of the Human Brain, the Sheep Eye Ball, and Cat dissections. The pictures and models of the eye, ear, and skeletal bones and muscles are so detailed and easy to pin point specific areas of study. The book also includes large illustrated models of a cross-section of the Human vertebrae as well. I only wish I had bought the book earlier in the semester! It will be an invaluable study aid for AP II as well!

MUST HAVE BOOK FOR ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY I AND II PLUS VERY AFFORDABLE PRICE.

This is a great book with amazing pictures of actual body parts so that helps tremendously. All the pictures are high quality and labeled. I am not a fan of the punch holes and having to put in in a binder because it is heavier but it does keep the book in better condition overall and allows you to just take what you need if you're someone that know that ahead of time.

About the Author
Randy Knight has taught introductory physics for over 30 years at Ohio State University and California Polytechnic University, where he is currently Professor of Physics. Randy received a Ph.D. in physics from the University of California--Berkeley. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics before joining the faculty at Ohio State University. It was at Ohio State, under the mentorship of Professor Leonard Jossem, that he began to learn about the research in physics education that, many years later, led to Five Easy Lessons: Strategies for Successful Physics Teaching, Physics for Scientists and Engineers: A Strategic Approach, and now to this book. Randy's research interests are in the field of lasers and spectroscopy and he has published over 25 research papers. When he's not in the classroom or in front of a computer, you can find Randy hiking, sea kayaking, playing the piano, or spending time with his wife Sally and their six cats.
Brian Jones has won several teaching awards at Colorado State University during his more than 20 years teaching in the Department of Physics. His teaching focus in recent years has been the College Physics class, including writing problems for the MCAT exam and helping students review for this test. Brian is also Director of the Little Shop of Physics, the Department's engaging and effective hands-on outreach program, which has merited coverage in publications ranging from the APS News to People magazine. Brian has been invited to give workshops on techniques of science instruction throughout the United States and internationally, including Belize, Chile, Ethiopia, Azerbaijan, Mexico, and Slovenia. Previously, he taught at Waterford Kamhlaba United World College in Mbabane, Swaziland, and Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. Brian and his wife Carol have dozens of fruit trees and bushes in their yard, including an apple tree that was propagated from a tree in Isaac Newton's garden, and they have traveled and camped in most of the United States.
Stuart Field has been interested in science and technology his whole life. While in school he built telescopes, electronic circuits, and computers. After attending Stanford University, he earned a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago, where he studied the properties of materials at ultralow temperatures. After completing a postdoctoral position at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology, he held a faculty position at the University of Michigan. Currently at Colorado State University, Stuart teaches a variety of physics courses, including algebra-based introductory physics, and was an early and enthusiastic adopter of Knight's Physics for Scientists and Engineers. Stuart maintains an active research program in the area of superconductivity. His hob¬bies include woodworking; enjoying Colorado's great outdoors; and ice hockey, where he plays goalie for a local team.

About the Author
Bob Blitzer is a native of Manhattan and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with dual majors in mathematics and psychology (minor: English literature) from the City College of New York. His unusual combination of academic interests led him toward a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Miami and a doctorate in behavioral sciences from Nova University. Bob is most energized by teaching mathematics and has taught a variety of mathematics courses at Miami-Dade College for nearly 30 years. He has received numerous teaching awards, including Innovator of the Year from the League for Innovations in the Community College, and was among the first group of recipients at Miami-Dade College for an endowed chair based on excellence in the classroom. If you must have it, it does the job.

The product itself is nice, however, I don't care for the way the book has been broken down. It gets a bit overwhelming. I think they could have simplified it a bit more. But then again, I could be a bit biased as I have too many other things to think about. I just think it is okay in comparison to other methods/books for math subjects, in particular, algebra. I do however really like the price and the set up for this particular product. It is certainly a bargain.

About the Author
Lester Rowntree was born in England and spent much of her life in Carmel, California. In addition to "Hardy Californians, "she wrote "The Flowering Shrubs of California "and four children's books. Lester B. Rowntree, her grandson, is a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley.

"Les Rowntree" teaches both Geography and Environmental Studies at San Jose State University in California, where he recently completed a term as the Chair of the interdisciplinary Department of Environmental Studies. As an environmental geographer, Dr. Rowntree's teaching and research interests focus on international environmental issues, the human dimensions of global change, biodiversity and conservation, and human-caused landscape transformation. He sees world regional geography as a way to engage and inform students by giving them the conceptual tools needed to assess global issues critically in their larger context. Dr. Rowntree has done research in Morocco, Mexico, Australia, and Europe, as well as in his native California. Current writing projects include a book on the natural history of California's Central Coast, along with textbooks in geography and environmental science. "Martin Lewis" is a lecturer in International Affairs at Stanford University He has conducted extensive research on environmental geography in the Philippines and on the intellectual history of global geography. His publications include "Wagering the Land: Ritual, Capital, and Environmental Degradation in the Cordillera of ""Northern Luzon,"" 1900-1986" (1992), and with Karen Wigen, "The Myth of Continents: A Critique of Metageography" (1997). Dr. Lewis has traveled extensively in East, South, and Southeast Asia. His current research focuses on the geographical dimensions of globalization. "Marie Price" is an Associate Professor of Geography and International Affairs at George Washington University A Latin American specialist, Marie has conducted research in Belize, Mexico, Venezuela, Cuba, and Bolivia. Shehas also traveled widely throughout Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa. Her studies have explored human migration, natural resource use, environmental conservation, and regional development. Dr. Price brings to "Globalization and Diversity "a special interest in regions as dynamic spatial constructs that are shaped over time through both global and local forces. Her publications include articles in the "Annals of the Association of American Geographers, Geographical Review, Journal of Historical Geography, CLAG Yearbook, Studies in Comparative International Development, the Brookings Institution Series" and "Focus." "William Wyckoff" is a geographer in the Department of Earth Sciences at Montana State University specializing in the cultural and historical geography of North America. He has written and co-edited several books on North American settlement geography, including "The Developer's Frontier: The Making of the Western New York Landscape" (1988), "The Mountainous West: Explorations in Historical Geography" (1995) and "Colorado"": The Making of a Western American Landscape 1860-1940" (1999). In 1990, he received the Burlington Northern Corporation's Award for Outstanding Teaching. In addition, in 2003 he received Montana State's Cox Family Fund for Excellence Faculty Award for Teaching and Scholarship. A World Regional Geography instructor for 18 years, Dr. Wyckoff hopes that the fresh approach taken in "Globalization and Diversity" will more effectively highlight the tensions evident in the world today as global change impacts particular places and people in dramatic and often unpredictable ways.

For A Textbook, It's Pretty Interesting.

This book is very interesting and makes the subject of Geography interesting down to the micro level. It's packed with helpful photographs, charts, maps, and sidebars that any student should find helpful as they begin to explore this beautiful and diverse world we live in. The only drawbacks I've discovered so far are that the colors on the maps don't always match the legends provided. And the type is condensed. It's not hard to read, but it usually takes longer than anticipated. Also, if you need to use the online features, you need to purchase your book new. Still waiting to hear from the publishers as to what, if anything, purchasers of used products can do.

However, of all the books my Professor could have chosen, I am definitely glad she picked this one. It is divided into 12 world regions, each of which has a separate chapter. It makes cross-referencing information for reports and studying for exams much easier.

NO Access Card

Extremely disappointed with this purchase. Originally bought this book without access card, had to return that one to pay significantly MORE for this book that supposedly contained the access card for Mastering Geography. Received the book, no access card. Ended up paying $40 for Mastering on their site. I would not recommend purchase of this product. Buy/rent the cheaper version of this book and purchase the access card online. It will save you a lot of hassle and money.

I needed this for a college course and I have to say I found it very interesting. This book will show you different cultures and how they are being affected by the process of globalization. If you are interested in the process of globalization and its effect on society, then you will enjoy reading this book.
