About the Author
Sallie A. Marston is an associate professor of geography and regional development at the University of Arizona and co-author of "Places and Regions in Global Context".

Paul L. Knox is a university distinguished professor and senior fellow for international advancement at Virginia Tech University. Between 1997 and 2006 he served as dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies. He is also a member of the Department of Urban Affairs and Planning and has written many books, including Urbanization: An Introduction to Urban Geography.

Paul Robbins is professor of Geography at the University of Arizona and is known for his interdisciplinary views of how geography interrelates with other disciplines. He has written and edited several books including the best selling textbook "Political Ecology: A Critical Introduction" (Blackwell 2004) and the recent "Lawn People: How Grasses Weeds and Chemicals Make Us Who We Are" (Temple University Press 2007).

About the Author

Matt Weisfeld is a college professor, software developer, and author based in Cleveland, Ohio. Prior to teaching college full time, he spent 20 years in the information technology industry as a software developer, entrepreneur, and adjunct professor. Weisfeld holds an MS in computer science and an MBA. Besides the first three editions of The Object-Oriented Thought Process, he has authored two other software development books and published many articles in magazines and journals, such as developer.com, Dr. Dobb’s Journal, The C/C++ Users Journal, Software Development Magazine, Java Report, and the international journal Project Management.

Many excellent chapters, Elvis leaves the building at times

The best audience for this book is a programmer who approaches coding procedurally and needs to be led in the direction of thinking object oriented. In fact, a number of chapters are flat out some of the best and clearest introductory material I've read on OOP. Some of the middle chapters of the book are just rearranged words saying the same thing in circles. You'll read it thinking something new will come of it, but it doesn't. The latter part of the book are misc chapters giving a short overview or discussion of things like UML, XML, JSON, Serialization, Marshaling, Web Services, and Design Patterns, and some of that is new in this fourth edition. These range from laughably cursory to excellent at times. Much of that material is obviously for beginners. The chapter on design patterns is probably the best introduction on the subject I've read, but it does suffer from the same problems as the rest of the book, as I'll note below.

If you read the third edition, the same errors are there in this fourth. The editing problems are disappointing. Like on page 223 he says, "By now you should realize that this is an actual application...The fact that the code has a main method in it is a sure tip." OK, well, the code doesn't have a main method. It leaves you wondering, "What planet am I on, did I miss something?" Another example: At the end of chapters it seems like he inserts the wrong portions or odd choices of code. Just really inconsistent stuff like that. And then there are things like sentences from previous paragraphs that reappear again almost word for word. Not to mention things like sentences from previous paragraphs that seem to appear again almost word for word.

I was tempted to give this book three stars because some of it is repetitious or pointless and especially because of the editing issues. Despite its generous portions of brilliance, I just didn't think the author should be rewarded for putting so little care into it as a whole, especially for what you would expect by a fourth rewrite! But I'll tell you, a lot of chapters are really excellent for the right audience. Also on the positive side, the code examples are very clear and to the point. While ideas are usually introduced with java samples, he also includes C# code and gives nice context to C++. It would be nice if the coding in the book was more practical, but it's usually the "model the world" kind of stuff which doesn't help you learn how object-oriented thinking applies to real coding.

I should note that practically every chapter references "Object Oriented Design in Java" by Gilbert and McCarty, published in 1998. That book obviously really influenced the author's life.

Wanted it to be better

The first couple of chapters are a good introduction and because of those you expect more from the book. After that, there is much repetition and you can tell the book is really old and simply updated -- though the update is not handled well.
The author continually references a very old book and expects you to use it as you read his book but the book is out of print and it is annoying to keep reading the author's suggestion to read that book:
"In Chapters 7 and 8 of their book Object-Oriented Design in Java, Stephen Gilbert and Bill McCarty present many examples of associations and composition in much more detail. I highly recommend referencing this material for a more in-depth look into these subjects." You can't reference that because the book is way out of print. Way. Last published in 1998. This statement makes Obj. Oriented Thought Process book feel even older.

There are also some errors:
At one point he is mentioning operator overloading and he says that .NET does not allow it. However, operator overloading is in C# and has been from the beginning -- well at least version 2.0.
The additional reason I only give 3 stars and really want to give about 2.5 is because this is supposed to be the Object Oriented ___Thought PROCESS__. The intro chapters set that up well, but then later he really doesn't deliver on a process to use for doing the object oriented design. He probably should've touched upon domain modeling more or something.

Not a bad purchase, but not a good one

If you are familiar with the basics of object-oriented programming this book is not for you. Based on the title I assumed the book was going to go into more detail on the design side of object-oriented programming.

I did not give the book three stars because it was not correct for my experience level, the rating is due to the enormous amount of repetition. A lot of information is available for free on the internet, I purchase books because I like to have access to high quality consistent information. While the quality of some parts of this book are great, it is not consistently high quality. I found myself thinking "Why is this section here? Didn't I just read this?" If you are very new to object-oriented programming and you do not know what encapsulation, inheritance and polymorhpism are you would do just as well reading various internet tutorials as you would reading this book.

If you are just starting out I would not say you are wasting your money buying this book, but if a friend were to ask me if they should purchase it I would say no.

About the Author

Mark Christiansen (christiansen.com) is a visual effects supervisor and creative director with a studio in San Francisco. He has worked with visual effects companies such as ILM, The Orphanage, and Evil Eye Pictures on Hollywood feature and independent films, and has served as a director, producer, designer, and compositor/animator on commercials, music videos, live events, and television documentary productions. Mark has done work directly for the Adobe After Effects development and marketing teams, is a founder at provideocoalition.com, and has taught courses at fxphd.com and Academy of Art University. He has been a guest host of popular podcasts such as “The VFX Show” and has written all editions of this book and coauthored After Effects 5.5 Magic.

This book is for the proficient who want to become experts.

When I decided to learn visual effects, Mark Christiansen's After Effects Studio Techniques became my bible. There is no better book for understanding how Adobe After Effects solves compositing and other vfx challenges. If you've mastered the beginning steps of AE, and are ready to make realistic illusions, and UNDERSTAND how these illusions work, then pick up this book and make some time for it. It's not easy reading, and it's not for beginners, but it will take you from competent to expert.
Every artisan goes through stages: from beginner, to proficient "journeyman," to master. In the world of technology and software, that journey is fast-paced, but also perilous-- the tool you relied on for years can become obsolete, or worse, be abandoned by its creators. Adobe After Effects has survived because of its flexibility and adaptability. It can make motion graphics, it can pull a greenscreen key, and it can even be a finishing suite for a video project.
But in order to get the most out of After Effects, users have to get beyond the project focused tutorials of Video Copilot and the like, and understand the limits and strengths of AE. Christiansen has the expertise to expound on the obscure technical details of this software, and he and his editor have the clear, articulate voice to present this information with concise language, detailed prose, and even a bit of humor. It is the theory and engineering behind compositing that I was looking for in this book, and I found it from beginning to end, along with step-by-step lessons in keying, motion tracking, and other bread-and-butter techniques. They also helped me understand the principles of linear, gamma, and log in video and film, something that had eluded me before.
Adobe After Effects CS6 Visual Effects and Compositing Studio Techniques is an advanced book. It is for AE users who want to take their competence to the level of expert by showing how to use one of the most flexible off-the-shelf applications around to create photorealistic illusions. I recommend it to all my students, and to anyone who is ready to complete their mastery of After Effects.

Best AE Compositing/VFX resource

If you're interested in AE for VFX/compositing, quite simply, you have to own this book...you'll learn something useful in pretty much every paragraph.

Ignore the 1-star review...That guy could benefit from an anger management class. The book clearly states on page xxiii:

"This is not a book for beginners. Although the first section is designed to make sure that you are making optimal use of the software, it's not an effective primer on After Effects in particular or digital video in general. If you're new to After Effects, first spend some time with its excellent documentation or check out one of the many books available to help beginners learn the application."

Not for beginners

Mark Christiansen's, After Effects and Visual Compositing Studio Techniques, takes you behind the scenes and under the hood of the latest super revved up version of Adobe After Effects.

The author begins by letting readers know that this is not a book for beginners. There are no step- by- step tutorials to be found here. Instead, Mr. Christiansen has written the book with the thought in mind of helping After Effects users become better visual effects artists. He accomplishes this by telling us pro ways to streamline our workflow, including what tools work best in different scenarios and gives us alternative solutions.

The book covers rotoscoping, motion tracking with the new 3D camera tracker and Mocha AE, color correcting and image optimization, color grading with Speedgrade-, ways to optimize projects and stay organized beyond pre-comping, pre-rendering and nesting layers, creating expressions - which includes a bonus list of additional online recourses, the new Ray-traced 3D Renderer, how to create depth maps, fog, explosions and special lighting effects and more, all while taking advantage of the new Global Performance and Persistent Disk Cache.

Improvements and additions in CS6 are explained thoroughly. All kinds of good tips and what the author calls, "gotchas" for sticky situations are pinpointed and brought to light.

Included with the book is a DVD containing Third party demo plug-ins including Red Giant's Trapcode Suite, Silhouette and Revisions, an Examples folder with all the Chapter files, and a handy Java Script debriefing pdf within a PDF folder chalked full of more resources.

If you are already an After Effects user and want to learn more about the inner workings of After Effects and why a pro would opt for one or a combination of tools over another, than this book will be an asset to you as a visual effects artist.
