Great fun!

If you're already an ambigram fan you'll definitely enjoy the many examples in this book, and if you've never heard of ambigrams you'll get a great introduction here... either way you're in for a treat! This book includes a couple of the greatest ambigram artists on the planet and others who are not well known but produced some great stuff. You get to see the process they went through to create their ambigrams and read the comments by the pros.

There are even tips for readers who might get inspired to make their own ambigrams. Granted you might never reach the level of genius displayed by the professionals in this book, but they weren't born knowing how to create ambigrams, so why not give it a try? I haven't finished reading every word of text in the book yet, but this is more the kind of book where you want to browse through it and go "Ooh! Look at this one! Look at that one!" and then go back and read more details about how they were accomplished.

It's all printed on high quality paper in full color.

Awesome book!!

It is an awesome (and apparently first of it's kind) collection of some of the finest ambigrams created by some of the most talented designers in the world. To a layman or a professional designer, it provides a detailed introduction into the world of the ambigram and the people who create it. It informs, amazes and entertains! The book is in full colour, the paper is of very good quality and the entire book oozes style!

The book focuses on special indepth case studies of designers from their starting point to the final finished pieces, each one reviewed by renowned typographers, as well as a varied look at ambigrams from designers around the world. If your looking for inspiration on ambigrams, typography, lettering or just want to know whatbambigrams are, then this will be a great addition to any library as there are few books on the subject (John Langdon's WORDPLAY being another).

Excellent Landscape Primer

I try to read all of Rob Sheppard's books. I find him to be a very approachable author. By that, I mean he does not make me feel like I have to spend thousands of dollars to get a decent picture. One of the best parts of this book is the description of his gear. While I often read books and blogs where the author recommends I spend a mint, Rob Sheppard's gear is so humble it really makes photography seem more a product of the photographer than his wallet. He also knows what he is talking about in terms of getting good landscape photographs. This is the first book I have read in this 'Snapshot to Great Shot' series and I am sure I will read a few more. The wildlife and exposure editions seem like they will be interesting to me. I like the format with an image or two closely analyzed as an example of each topic. So, I recommend this book highly and, if you like it, find and read more of Rob Sheppard's work.

Great Book!

I took a number of classes at Hennepin Technical Institute from Rob Sheppard when he was in Minnesota and loved his instructional method. This book furthers his wonderful instructional ability, being easy to understand and relate to in my own world. It is a refresher and new learning experience. Love the 'assignments' at the end of each chapter. Great book.

A very good book for beginning photographers but of very little value to those over and above this level

This book, like those in Peachpit’s “From Snapshots to Great Shots” series, is geared to the beginner. It contains relatively basic information on equipment (i.e., importance of tripod in landscape photography, overviews of types of digital camera and formats, etc.), composition (i.e., rule of two-thirds, etc.), exposure and depth-of-field. Any photographer over and above the beginner would have heard everything mentioned with regard to these a million times over. Thus the book, for anyone over and above the beginner would not find too much value in the book.

A few important facts that also need to be mentioned about this book is that it covers a few topics that are rarely touched upon by books on landscape photography. One such topic, rather surprisingly, is how to make use of the sky. Few books on landscape photography touch upon this. The book also has chapters geared to using HDR photography specifically in situations geared to landscape photography, black and white landscape photography and computer fine tuning specifically geared to landscape photography. Very few books geared toward the beginning landscape photographer cover these topics.

The book does have one problem and that is that it does not emphasize (or even state for that matter) the very important fact that early sunsets and sunrises produce lighting that tends to be, in general, fantastic for landscape photographers. No examples or discussion is provided of using lighting during these so important photogenic parts of the day.

In short, a very good book that the beginning photographer in the field would find of quite some value but that more experienced photographers would not. Hence four star for the beginner and two for the experienced.

About the Author
Maurice Sharp is a 21-year veteran of mobile development at companies both large and small, ranging from Apple, Palm, and eBay to ShopWell and Couchsurfing. Maurice got his start as an intern developing the Newton ToolKit prototype, then as a Developer Technical Support (DTS) Engineer helping make the world safe and fun for Newton and Palm developers. After mastering the DTS side, he went back to coding, and he currently manages and does mobile development at Couchsurfing; runs his own consulting company, KLM Apps; and is ex officio technical advisor to some mobile-focused startups. A Great Place to Start with iOS 7

This book is a good place to start iOS development, but I would recommend already knowing Objective-C.

Chapter 2, Objective-C Boot Camp, gives a refresher on Objective-C, but you'll need more than what it provides. A great place to get started is with Objective-C Programming: The Big Nerd Ranch Guide (2nd Edition). After that Effective Objective-C 2.0: 52 Specific Ways to Improve Your iOS and OS X Programs is a great read!!

This book is more of a cover to cover read, or at least a chapter at a time read. The topics are covered in detail, but in a verbose style. Not in a negative way. The book says right on the cover that it is a "Hands-on Guide". The authors list each step they want you to make and the explain the reasons for making them .The authors have a great writing style which their very thorough approach easy to read. Not all authors can pull that off.

The authors walk you through a lot of hands-on exercises. The topics usually stay at a higher level. For example the chapter on storyboards mentions that in complex applications multiple storyboards can be used, but does not cover the topic because it is beyond the scope of the book. They do however cover the higher level features in detail.

The book primarily uses one project throughout the book. For each chapter the code includes a version of the code at the start of a chapter, at the end of a chapter, answers to challenges that are made at the end of the chapters, and the assets needed such at images and icons.

One really nice aspect of the book is that the screenshots and diagrams are in color, however, the typed code is not. That is not really that big of a deal, plus you get all the code to bring up in Xcode.

This book is an iOS 7 and Objective-C 2.0 book, which is nice for a change. There are a lot of books out there that have multiple editions and they contain a lot of legacy info. I feel some of them only contain that info because for the authors to clean it up would require a major effort.

By major effort, I mean re-writing the book. Some of those books still include bashing Storyboards and code that does not use ARC. Although I agree you should understand that a mix of multiple Storyboards, NIBs, and coded UIs will be used on large projects, and you should know how to deal with legacy code, it is nice just to have a book that focuses on iOS 7.

All in all I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn iOS 7 fundamentals.

This is a great book if you already know objective C. If you do not know Objective C you should get a book on that before attempting this one. Please not that this edition does not have iOS 8 or Swift detailed in it.

project based instruction

This book has some good qualities but it is not for everyone. It is project based - meaning all the concepts are explain by creating and re-creating a project. The book takes you though a process of building a simple project, then a little more complex way, then even more complex, and so on. Some might like this, but for me it was way too inefficient to be useful. Because the features you want to understand are in context of an app that is constantly changing throughout the book you are forced to go page by page. For example, it takes 75 pages to work through table views and is spread out over 100 pages. Unless you commit to reading those 100 pages you will not know all the settings that have to be in place to get to the final version of the table. I would prefer a more direct approach: discuss all the features to the table, how the classes work together, and some code examples on each feature.

About the Author

Mario F. Triola is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Dutchess Community College, where he has taught statistics for over 30 years. Marty is the author of Essentials of Statistics, Elementary Statistics Using Excel, Elementary Statistics Using the Graphing Calculator, and he is a co-author of Biostatistics for the Biological and Health Sciences, Statistical Reasoning for Everyday Life and Business Statistics. He has written several manuals and workbooks for technology supporting statistics education. Outside of the classroom, Marty has been a speaker at many conferences and colleges. His consulting work includes the design of casino slot machines and fishing rods, and he has worked with attorneys in determining probabilities in paternity lawsuits, identifying salary inequities based on gender, analyzing disputed election results, analyzing medical data, and analyzing medical school surveys. Marty has testified as an expert witness in New York State Supreme Court. The Text and Academic Authors Association has awarded Mario F. Triola a "Texty" for Excellence for his work on Elementary Statistics.

The editions get worse and worse

Our department has used Triola's statistics book for our large,
multi-section baby stats course for at least the past six years, and
it was through simple inertia that we adopted the 11th edition. Using
the earlier editions, I had almost begun to like Triola's
follow-the-recipe approach, and was able to make the course useful to
some of our students.

The 11th edition, however, is far worse than anything that came
before. The publishers have made numerous changes to format, style,
and content, and not one of them is for the better.

Format: The new edition has more clutter than ever in the margins.
Just about every page contains a distracting and usually irrelevant
sidebar, and color photographs (likewise irrelevant) push their way
into the text everywhere, as if the deisgners were trying to show off
their collection of pictures and their ability to flow text around
them. The actual text, when you can find it amid this clamoring
circus of marginal distractions, is marred by too-frequent changes in
background color and font size. It's difficult to read, and it's
difficult to orient oneself in the text, because the designers, while
splashing color and font changes all over the place, somehow managed
to make the chapter and section headings disappear. Just try to find
the beginning of Section 4-4. The decision to use a
proportional-space font in the tables of numbers on the Formulas and
Tables card suggests that the designer has never done any work with
tables of numbers.

Style: It's clear from the writing style that Dr. Triola is no longer
involved in the manufacture of the product that bears his name. (Or
else he had a very good copy editor in the earlier editions, who is
gone now.) A few paragraphs survive from the earlier editions, but
those that have been altered or inserted were written by someone
without the original author's grasp of English grammar. The new
author is also less careful about precise mathematical phrasing, and
is rather careless about things like referring to the probability of
an event that has already happened or the probability that a parameter
has a certain value. Many of the exercises now include a "tag-line"
question that is probably meant to help the students interpret the
results. A few of these questions are useful, but far more of them
require the student to speculate on or make judgments about subjects
with which he is almost certainly unfamiliar. In any case, they are
annoying, both to the student and to the instructor who must keep
repeating "Don't worry about that last part."

Content: How is it that later editions of the same book contain more
errors than earlier ones? Here are a few particularly nasty mistakes
that have been allowed into (or created for) the 11th edition:

Page 148, Exercise 9. "When rolling a single die at the Venetian
Casino in Las Vegas, there are 6 chances in 36 that the outcome is a
7." Does no one proofread these exercises? (Or does the Venetian
Casino really use 36-sided dice?)

Page 168, Exercise 17. The table supplied with the exercise is
missing its column headers. Again, this should have been caught by a
proofreader.

Page 433. There is an error in the presentation of the main formula
to be used in this section. And it's not just a slip-up in the
narrative text: The formula presented in the highlighted box is
incorrect. This is inexcusable. How could the proofreader have
missed it?

Page 484, Exercise 25. The exercise describes an observational study,
and concludes with the question "Should marijuana use be of concern to
college students?" The answer provided in the back of the book
suggests that the study shows a causal relationship between marijuana
use and impaired mental ability. This is in direct contradiction to
the rule that is so emphatically stated on pages 19 and 20: causality
may not be inferred from an observational study. The original author
would not have allowed such a blatant error to find its way into the
"officially correct" answers.

On the Formulas and Tables card -- the one that students use as a
reference when they're doing problems and taking exams -- the formula
for the chi-square test statistic is incorrect. How, then, are we to
trust anything else on this card? Where was the proofreader?

It does appear that Addison-Wesley, in the custom of the modern
producer of textbooks, rushed this edition through the mill, in order
to have all those overpriced copies on college bookstore shelves by
the beginning of the fall semester. In doing so, they apparently
omitted to have the book proofread or to give much thought to how
thoroughly the new design would discourage anyone from actually
reading it. Of course, it's possible that there's something even more
meretricious going on, and the publisher inserted the errors (all new
to the 11th edition) on purpose, so that the 11th edition could more
quickly be made obsolete, and replaced by an even more overpriced 12th
edition. I wouldn't put it past them.

Trash -- utter trash.

I am saddened to see the textbook community to mistake color, flash, graphics, and artifical examples as quality textbook. Although I understand they need to market, this book demonstrates the effect of marketing upon education.

My students complain that the text is difficult to read. Although I know they are new, I have to agree with their opinion. I sat and read the text -- and found it lacking respectable composition and clarity. I feel for my students and will not use the text again.

In addition, the examples are useless. They match the homework at the end of the chapter, but only "teach to the test". What's the point if the student don't learn methods on how to critically think and approach problems? Oh wow, they know what P(Z>1) is, but what do they know to do with it? Nothing!

Perhaps it is time for the educational community to produce their own compact books, customized to what students (and not publishers) need. I cannot recommend this book for anyone and would beg you to reconsider.

Pearson charged me $80 - and then took the book away - seriously!

I am using this book in a basic statistics course via MyMathLab. I purchased the book as part of MyMathLab, and I'm publishing my review here so that others will know. The online version of the text costs $80.00. That is by far the most expensive ebook I've ever purchased. According to Pearson (the people who produce MyMathLab) I am only able to access the book while online. There is no way to download it to my device. The other reviewers are absolutely correct - it contains an incredible about of material that has little or nothing to help students learn statistics. I can only use the ebook while I am registered for the course. Once that registration expires, I do not have access to the book ever again under any circumstances for the rest of my life. The $80.00 I paid for the ebook is gone, and so is the book, once the course is over. If I actually wanted to use the book in a real life situation after I complete the course (which I would never recommend), I'd have to buy the paper version at full price - which I won't do.

Since the book is part of MyMathLab, I can not copy or paste text, so there is no way to make notes of my own based on text in the book. Nor is there any way to highlight text, or add comments to the text. There is no way to save the text.

In addition to the errors mentioned by other reviewers, there are other very frustrating designs in the text. Most obvious is the complete lack of links. If the text says "see Appendix B", there is no link in the text to Appendix B. It might be 600 pages away, and it's up to the student to figure out how to find it. The table of contents can get someone to chapter headings, but it's not easy or intuitive.

There are a lot of other issues with the book and the ebook. For example, the page size can not change, so I can not set it to fit onto my screen. Many times when i scroll to the bottom of a page it bounces back up to the top. So I drag it back down. It bounces back up. This isn't funny, it's horrible design. I can go on and on and on with horrible design issues in the ebook, but you get the idea.

Bottom line - I'm supposed to be learning statistics with this system. It's not working. I'm going to simply Google the topics (such as "How to make a histogram") and learn that way, and/or get some other statistics book to learn from. This is education in spite of the text. The text itself in the ebook does not flow well, it is not easy to follow, and all of that makes it very difficult to learn statistics. All the animations and videos do NOT help nearly as much as they take away from learning the basic ideas and then practicing them. I like the goals of making the material relevant and practical, but those benefits are vastly outweighed by all the problems and issues.

Everyone already knows if you buy the paper version of the book that it is vastly overpriced, and if you get the ebook, now you know that it gets taken away when the course ends. To top it all, you'll need to use another book or method to learn statistics while you are in class if you really want to excel and master the subject. I would give this book negative stars if Amazon would allow it, it's really that awful. Recommendation: Avoid at all costs.

Bradley specializes in software reengineering and software migration, injecting quality and stability into existing legacy systems. Bradley has converted many applications from VB6, ASP Classic, and early .NET versions into more modern applications with current architecture and the latest quality approaches. His recent projects include reengineering a two million-line .NET application to use modern architectures and unit testing, resulting in a near zero defect count. He is an expert at updating applications without having to shut them down or stop feature development. Using a reengineering process Bradley developed, old applications can be updated to improve quality and satisfy existing customers, while also allowing continued feature development to keep pace with competitors and attract new customers.

Bradley manages the San Francisco .NET user group and is a frequent speaker on technical software topics throughout the U.S. He holds a bachelor of Computer Science degree from the University of North Carolina and an MBA from the University of California at Berkeley.

Great to have a dose of reality

It's very refreshing to finally read a book on these topics that is based on real world experiences and not just the theory. The author has obviously had experience with reengineering real world systems where the reality can be very ugly. This book suggests solutions that make sense to me given the systems that I've encountered. Kudos...

A great reference and guide

This book has been an invaluable reference. There are lots of books out there about building systems using .NET but the reality most developers face is that we don't often get to build or design things from scratch. I find myself often working with systems that are already built and not always designed with the best practices in mind. This book is for those of us who find ourselves in that boat and wish to improve the overall design & quality without resorting to a complete rewrite (CFOs hate hearing that!). What is exceptional about the book is that the author is upfront and honest about when these approaches will work and when they won't. Furthermore the patterns and architecture recommended by the author are backed up by real working code - there are lots of examples in this book that you can literally plug into your system with a few tweaks here and there. But in the end what I most appreciated is how the book is organized - it starts with simple things you can do and gently works its way into more advanced topics. Great job!

Easy read with good advice

It was a very easy read for a technical book. I breezed through most of it in two evenings. The chapters are practical, offering good advice that shows how to get from typical, old, messy code to cleaner, more maintainable code without a rewrite and without losing your already working functionality. It discusses how to make changes in phases that are reasonably sized with low likelihood of introducing new errors.

I appreciated how it pointed out use the refactoring tools in Visual Studio to speed along the process. It also introduces some good spaghetti fighting patterns in an approachable way.

I feel that programmers currently working to improve an older codebase will appreciate the subject the most.
