About the Author

Larry Goldstein has received several distinguished teaching awards, given more than fifty Conference and Colloquium talks & addresses, and written more than fifty books in math and computer programming.  He received his PhD at Princeton and his BA and MA at the University of Pennsylvania. He also teaches part time at Drexel University.

 

David Schneider, who is known widely for his tutorial software, holds a BA degree from Oberlin College and a PhD from MIT.  He is currently an associate professor of mathematics at the University of Maryland. He has authored eight widely used math texts, fourteen highly acclaimed computer books, and three widely used mathematics software packages. He has also produced instructional videotapes at both the University of Maryland and the BBC.

 

Martha Siegel holds a BA from Russell Sage College, attended Rensselear Polytechnic Institute as a special student, and received her PhD at the University of Rochester. From 1966 until 1971 she taught at Goucher University in Baltimore. Since 1971 she has been a professor at Towson State University, also in Maryland. Professor Siegel has been on the writing team of this book since the fifth edition and is also the co-author of a precalculus reform book.

Decent textbook

What I like about this textbook is that the chapter questions actually seem to correspond with what was written in the book.I should note I'm a little biased since I've taken other math classes recently, so the information is still fresh in my head. Also, our professor only covered about 6 of the 12 chapters in the book, so some material might be a bit harder.
If you haven't taken math in a long time, it might be difficult to wrap your head around some of the material, but not impossible. And there are worse math textbooks out there.
The price is ridiculous, buy it at the end of the semester so you can get a good deal on a used one.

Piece of garbage

I hate this book so much. First, you can find a lot of these problems online. Second, the book does a horrible job of explaining how to answer problems. 90% of the problems in the book are unsolvable with the help from the explanations. The only thing this book has is problems for you to solve and no explanation on how to do them. This thing has caused me so much pain. Will burn again.

About the Author

William Briggs has been on the mathematics faculty at the University of Colorado at Denver for twenty-three years. He received his BA in mathematics from the University of Colorado and his MS and PhD in applied mathematics from Harvard University. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses throughout the mathematics curriculum with a special interest in mathematical modeling and differential equations as it applies to problems in the biosciences. He has written a quantitative reasoning textbook, Using and Understanding Mathematics; an undergraduate problem solving book, Ants, Bikes, and Clocks; and two tutorial monographs, The Multigrid Tutorial and The DFT: An Owner’s Manual for the Discrete Fourier Transform. He is the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Vice President for Education, a University of Colorado President’s Teaching Scholar, a recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award of the Rocky Mountain Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), and the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship to Ireland.

 

Lyle Cochran is a professor of mathematics at Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington. He holds BS degrees in mathematics and mathematics education from Oregon State University and a MS and PhD in mathematics from Washington State University. He has taught a wide variety of undergraduate mathematics courses at Washington State University, Fresno Pacific University, and, since 1995, at Whitworth University. His expertise is in mathematical analysis, and he has a special interest in the integration of technology and mathematics education. He has written technology materials for leading calculus and linear algebra textbooks including the Instructor’s Mathematica Manual for Linear Algebra and Its Applications by David C. Lay and the Mathematica Technology Resource Manual for Thomas’ Calculus. He is a member of the MAA and a former chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Whitworth University.

 

Bernard Gillett is a Senior Instructor at the University of Colorado at Boulder; his primary focus is undergraduate education. He has taught a wide variety of mathematics courses over a twenty-year career, receiving five teaching awards in that time. Bernard authored a software package for algebra, trigonometry, and precalculus; the Student’s Guide and Solutions Manual and the Instructor’s Guide and Solutions Manual for Using and Understanding Mathematics by Briggs and Bennett; and the Instructor’s Resource Guide and Test Bank for Calculus and Calculus: Early Transcendentals by Briggs, Cochran, and Gillett. Bernard is also an avid rock climber and has published four climbing guides for the mountains in and surrounding Rocky Mountain National Park.

About the Author
Karen Timberlake is professor emeritus of chemistry at Los Angeles Valley College, where she taught chemistry for allied health and preparatory chemistry for 36 years. She received her bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Washington and her Master's degree in biochemistry from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Professor Timberlake has been writing chemistry textbooks for 30 years. During that time, her name has become associated with the strategic use of pedagogical tools that promote student success in chemistry and the application of chemistry to real-life situations. More than one million students have learned chemistry using texts, laboratory manuals, and study guides written by Karen Timberlake. In addition to Chemistry: An Introduction to General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, Tenth Edition, she is also the author of General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, Structures of Life, Second Edition and Basic Chemistry, Second Edition, along with the accompanying Study Guide with Solutions for Selected Problems, Laboratory Manual, and Essentials Laboratory Manuall. Professor Timberlake belongs to numerous science and educational organizations including the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). She was a Western Regional Winner of Excellence in College Chemistry Teaching Award given by the Chemical Manufacturers Association. In 2004, she received the McGuffey Award in Physical Sciences from the Text and Academic Authors Association, for her textbook Chemistry: An Introduction to General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, Eighth Edition, which has demonstrated excellence over time. In 2006, she receivedthe Textbook Excellence Award for the first edition of Basic Chemistry.She has participated in education grants for science teaching including the Los Angeles Collaborative for Teaching Excellence (LACTE) and a Title III grant at her college. She speaks at conferences and educational meetings on the use of student-centered teaching methods in chemistry to promote the learning success of students. Her husband, Bill, is also a professor emeritus of chemistry and has contributed to writing this text. He taught preparatory and organic chemistry at Los Angeles Harbor College for 36 years. When the Professors Timberlake are not writing textbooks, they relax by hiking, traveling, trying new restaurants, cooking, and playing tennis. The Timberlakes' son, John, and daughter-in-law, Cindy, are involved in preparing materials for English language learners. Their grandson, Daniel, and granddaughter, Emily, don't know what they want to be yet.

DO NOT BUY THIS MANUAL USED

I teach this lab manual in my Introduction to Physical Geography laboratory course.

Interested buyers cannot - I REPEAT, CANNOT - buy this used for their courses. It is a lab manual where the assignments are *part* of the book, therefore, you have to tear them out to hand in the assignments.

I can understand the attempt at cost efficiency, but you cannot get a used copy of a manual that requires tearing the pages out to turn in assignments. I assure you that the sellers are not at fault for your misinterpretation of the word *used* in relation to a manual like this, but I figured that I could hopefully save some frustration for students who might not know that they'd be using a tear-out manual.

As for quality, the lab manual uses different exercises to teach facets of earth system geography using visuals and graphs. I believe that it is an excellent teaching tool, and I would recommend it to lecturers and graduate assistants looking for a good manual for use in their physical geography courses.

I rented Physical Geography Laboratory Manual for McKnight's Physical Geography: A Landscape Appreciation for $30.00 and was not happy with the entire manual!! About the Author

Eric Schulz has been on the mathematics faculty at Walla Walla Community College in Walla Walla, Washington for twenty-two years. He has a BS in mathematics from Seattle Pacific University and an MS in mathematics from the University of Washington. He has been working with technology in teaching since 1989 and is especially interested in innovative and effective uses of technology in teaching mathematics. He worked on Visual Linear Algebra with Gene Herman and Mike Pepe, created the Quick Start Assistant palettes shipping in Mathematica 7 & 8 worldwide, and works with Wolfram Research, Inc. as a developer.

 

William Briggs has been on the mathematics faculty at the University of Colorado at Denver for twenty-three years. He received his BA in mathematics from the University of Colorado and his MS and PhD in applied mathematics from Harvard University. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses throughout the mathematics curriculum with a special interest in mathematical modeling and differential equations as it applies to problems in the biosciences. He has written a quantitative reasoning textbook, Using and Understanding Mathematics; an undergraduate problem solving book, Ants, Bikes, and Clocks; and two tutorial monographs, The Multigrid Tutorial and The DFT: An Owner’s Manual for the Discrete Fourier Transform. He is the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Vice President for Education, a University of Colorado President’s Teaching Scholar, a recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award of the Rocky Mountain Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), and the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship to Ireland.

 

Lyle Cochran is a professor of mathematics at Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington. He holds BS degrees in mathematics and mathematics education from Oregon State University and a MS and PhD in mathematics from Washington State University. He has taught a wide variety of undergraduate mathematics courses at Washington State University, Fresno Pacific University, and, since 1995, at Whitworth University. His expertise is in mathematical analysis, and he has a special interest in the integration of technology and mathematics education. He has written technology materials for leading calculus and linear algebra textbooks including the Instructor’s Mathematica Manual for Linear Algebra and Its Applications by David C. Lay and the Mathematica Technology Resource Manual for Thomas’ Calculus. He is a member of the MAA and a former chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Whitworth University.

Pearson website is buggy, avoid instructors using this book.

I am using this for my Trigonometry class. The book is written in mathematica, so it runs the .cdf file in your web browser and on the Pearson website which is buggy as hell. This is a horrible way to present a textbook. At least distribute it as a PDF or webpage without a plugin. The entire learning experience so far has been difficult if not impossible as the textbook and player have bugs that manifest on Mac OS X 10.9. This is not worth the $1500 paid for tuition.

If your instructor is using this book, run and run fast.

I'm currently in the process of dealing with this book and am thinking about just withdrawing from this class because this book is such a pain to deal with.

Let me break down this book for you...

Exploration and Notes:
Half of the book is notes and the other half is exercises.
Now here's the kicker, the exercises they ask you to complete in the notes are different from the exercises presented in the actual e-textbook.
Not only this, but there's no way to check if you're right in these exercises. So you could potentially be doing everything wrong, have the wrong answer, and still not know because there's no way to check aside from trying to contact your instructor.

The e-textbook has interactive graphs that are supposed to help you understand what is happening, but does completely the opposite.
These graphs go with the exercises that you can't check your answers to and will confuse the hell out of you due to poorly worded questions about the interactive graphs, and sometimes the graphs don't even work. This book over complicates things in every manner from basic addition/subtraction of functions to more advanced trigonometry.

THIS IS THE WORST PRECALCULUS BOOK ON THE FACE OF THIS EARTH.
If your instructor is using this book and you can get your class refunded or switched to another instructor, DO IT.
NO, DO IT. I thought the same thing, "Oh, this book can't be THAT bad."
I assure you, it is, don't waste your money.
