About the Author

With training in mathematics, statistics, and economics, Mike Sullivan, III has a varied teaching background that includes 15 years of instruction in both high school and college-level mathematics. He is currently a full-time professor of mathematics and statistics at Joliet Junior College. Mike has numerous textbooks in publication in addition to his Introductory Statistics Series, which include a Developmental Math series, and a Precalculus series, which he writes with his father, Michael Sullivan. Mike has built this book in the classroom using feedback from his students. He is well aware of the challenges of students taking an introductory statistics course. His goal is for students to be more informed interpreters of data, so that they will be better decision makers and have stronger critical-thinking skills. When not in the classroom or writing, Michael enjoys spending time with his three children, Michael, Kevin, and Marissa, and playing golf.

I bought this book for an online stats class, this book was more helpful than the professor. Its your standard text book, and I think that you pretty much have to buy it if its assigned for the class so a review doesn't help much. I am however glad that the description was updated, before it said it came with an access card when it does not come with an access card.

Best beginning Photoshop book I've ever seen

I probably have a dozen or more books on Photoshop as I have been trying to find the time to learn to use it since about version 3. Every time I see a new book in a bookstore I thumb through it and see a few things that would be helpful for beginners but they always seem to go off on a tangent meant to impress rather than to educate. This book seems to be different in the fact that it picks the subject give you step-by-step explanation of what it does and how to use it. It doesn't go into overly technical explanations but seems to have what I feel is just enough information to clearly tell you what the tool or mode is for and enough examples to firmly set it in your mind. The book is 488 pages and I have to say that the pages are beautifully laid out on very high quality paper and the joy to read. The photographs are all in excellent color and all the screenshots of the various panels are clear, sharp, and look exactly like what you see on the screen. One feature that I did not realize was included when I purchased the book is that you receive an access code which allows you to download the entire book as a PDF file and a dozen or so short videos explaining some of the features and how to use them. If you're new to Photoshop or have been using it for some time and a curious about how to use some of the features you've never tried, this is the book for you. I love this book and would recommend it to anyone.

Excent resource...

... for those who are novices to Adobe Illustrator CS6 or for advanced users moving to the new platform.

This book helps to guide you through the new interface and also present CS6 features in a clear manner.

I normally use Illustrator for converting photographs into line art and also for manipulating engineering drawings for illustrations in technical manuals, but there are a myriad more features that I have yet to touch and this book seems to be a good source to help me touch those features.

Illustrations in the book are in color and are well supported by text. If video is more your thing, the DVD that is contained in the book may suit your fancy.

After reading through other books on Illustrator CS6, I decided that this one suited my needs for having a viable reference when working my way through Illustrator.

This book has been helpful when trying to figure out how to do something in Photoshop. I would definitely buy this publisher's book for other Adobe products.

It is worth noting that this book is not a "read-through" book. It is more of a "go-to" book - for reference purposes. If you are wanting a book that you can sit down and read about Photoshop and the many uses for it, this is not the book for you; however, if you want an in-depth, step-by step instructions on how to use Photoshop, this is the book for you. It offers clear, detailed step-by step instructions.

About the Author

Eric J. Simon is an associate professor of Department of Biology and Health Science at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. He teaches introductory biology to science majors and nonscience majors, as well as upper-level courses in genetics, microbiology, tropical marine biology, and molecular biology. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to improve teaching and learning in the science classroom, particularly for nonscience majors. He is the coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts and Connections, Seventh Edition.

Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in biology from Harvard University (where she was initially a philosophy major), an M.S. in microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). During her twelve years as an editor, she played a major role in a number of successful textbooks. She is the lead author of Campbell Biology, Ninth Edition and Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.

Jean L. Dickey is a professor of biology at Clemson University. She had no idea that science was interesting until her senior year in high school, when a scheduling problem landed her in advanced biology. Abandoning plans to study English or foreign languages, she enrolled in Kent State University as a biology major. After receiving her B.S. in biology, she went on to earn a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Purdue University. Since joining the faculty at Clemson in 1984, Dr. Dickey has specialized in teaching nonscience majors, including a course designed for pre-service elementary teachers and workshops for in-service teachers. She also developed an investigative laboratory curriculum for general biology. Dr. Dickey is the author of Laboratory Investigations for Biology, Second Edition, and is a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.

About the Author

Allen R. Angel received his AAS in Electrical Technology from New York City Community College. He then received his BS in Physics and his MS in Mathematics from SUNY at New Paltz, and he took additional graduate work at Rutgers University. He is Professor Emeritus at Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York where he served for many years as the chair of the Mathematics Department. He also served as the Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation Summer Institutes at Rutgers University from 1967—73. He served as the President of the New York State Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (NYSMATYC) and the Northeast Vice President of the American Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC). He is the recipient of many awards including a number of NISOD Excellence in Teaching Awards, NYSMATYC's Outstanding Contributions to Mathematics Education Award, and AMATYC's President Award. Allen enjoy tennis, worldwide travel, and visiting with his children and granddaughter.

Dennis Runde received his BS and MS in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin–Platteville and Milwaukee, respectively. He has a PhD in Mathematics Education from the University of South Florida. He has been teaching for twenty years at State College of Florida, Manatee, and Sarasota Counties and for ten years at Saint Stephen's Episcopal School. Besides coaching little league baseball, his other interests include history, politics, fishing, canoeing, and cooking. He and his wife Kristin stay busy keeping up with their three sons—Alex, Nick, and Max.

I got an A...

I purchased this book because it was the assigned text for my Elementary Algebra college course.

It had been nearly 30 years (!) since my last math class and I have always been very weak in math but I actually found that, overall, the book explained the procedures for performing the different mathematical and algebraic actions reasonably well, although the book is not intended to be the be-all and end-all of the instruction. You do still have to go to the lectures, pay attention, and take a lot of notes! ;) For that reason, I do think this book might be a poor choice for students trying to learn on their own, either as a referesher, in preparation for CLEP type testing, or in a homeschooling situation (unless a competent instructor is available). Still, I think it is valuable to go through the body of the chapter soon after the lecture and work the problems in the discussion sections before tackling the homework problems, because it will reinforce what was taught in the lecture.

I do feel I must warn people that the later chapters' explanations are often rather abbreviated because they do expect that you will have thoroughly absorbed the contents of earlier chapters and so do not explain many steps that were covered earlier in the book. If you find yourself beginning to get a little bit bogged down, don't wait, get help IMMEDIATELY because you will get yourself in quicksand really fast if you don't have the basics down solid and the book won't be as much help as you need then. Trust me on this one - luckily I had done well enough on my earlier tests and quizzes and kept up with all my homework so I could afford to basically tank the final and still squeak into my A, because I completely crashed and burned in chapter 8!

Although it's a heavy book to lug around, I appreciated the large visual format, uncrowded page layouts and clear typeface. Not much highlighting needed in this book due the color coding (although I did use quite a few Post-It flags and sticky notes to mark certain important things and add my own notations) so if this is a gen-ed for you it may be a good choice to rent this one and save the money to buy the books in your major subject that you'll be most likely to use as reference down the line.

Overpriced waste of trees

Overpriced waste of trees. A hodgepodge of problems coupled with instructions on how to solve 25% of them. Totally worthless without the 'mymathlab' access code ($99 extra if not buying this book new).

This book did teach me one thing, though: the order of operations. 1. Read chapter in this book 2. Get problem from this book 3. Google/go to khan academy for a coherent lesson.

For as expensive as it is, you would think that it would be more than just a problems workbook. But then, poor students are the ones getting stuck with the cost, so who cares.

Best Math Text That I Have Ever Used!

This book has step-by-step instructions that teaches students exactly what they need to know in an easy-to-follow format. I have never had a math textbook that was this well written. You definitely will be able to complete the practice problems without any major problems by following the examples.

Note: I wasn't required to purchase the online component, so I can't comment on it. I can't see a reason why you would need it.

About the Author

Larry Goldstein has received several distinguished teaching awards, given more than fifty Conference and Colloquium talks & addresses, and written more than fifty books in math and computer programming. He received his PhD at Princeton and his BA and MA at the University of Pennsylvania. He also teaches part time at Drexel University.

David Schneider, who is known widely for his tutorial software, holds a BA degree from Oberlin College and a PhD from MIT. He is currently an associate professor of mathematics at the University of Maryland. He has authored eight widely used math texts, fourteen highly acclaimed computer books, and three widely used mathematics software packages. He has also produced instructional videotapes at both the University of Maryland and the BBC.

Martha Siegel holds a BA from Russell Sage College, attended Rensselear Polytechnic Institute as a special student, and received his PhD at the University of Rochester. From 1966 until 1971 she taught at Goucher University in Baltimore. Since 1971 she has been a professor at Towson State University, also in Maryland. Professor Siegel has been on the writing team of this book since the fifth edition and is also the co-author of a precalculus reform book.

[BUY] Excellent Book on jQuery Ecosystem

What is this book good for?
*If you have some experience with Javascript and/or JQuery, you will find this book useful in your technical library. If you are starting with jquery, then you will find the introduction decent.
*This book has the flavor of cookbooks - recipes and examples. When you are doing JQuery based development and are searching for answers on how to do certain things, you can either do a lot of google searching or you can open this book and look at a recipe. I would prefer the book because you can look at the table of contents to the appropriate recipe and find concise code to achieve something.
*I liked the various best practices described in this book such as placing script tags at the bottom of the page. There is sufficient reasoning provided for best practices.
*There is decent treatment of jquery, jquery UI, JQuery Mobile and Twitter Bootstrap Framework. So one book all encompassing this, is valuable for developers.

How can this book be improved?
* There is slight disconnect when the chapters on JQuery Mobile are starting. There is no gradual easing of the reader into mobile paradigms. It starts with JQuery Mobile specific code. It does not answer things like - how do we design a page that caters to both regular and mobile pages? If it cannot be done together, then the book should state it.
* I liked the treatment of Twitter Bootstrap library. But it is not comprehensive. If you had page limits or wanted to keep costs down, I understand.
* Maybe add Tips/Best Practice highlighted sections so readers can catch it right away without going through the text. When you are trying to find something quickly, you don't want to search in the prose. If it is highlighted, it will be very useful.

Examples, examples, examples..

The main thing I love about this book is that code examples make up the majority of the book. I find it frustrating when books label themselves as professional, and while having great descriptions of the technology, completely fall short by providing a code snippet that simply declares the feature instead of showing how it can be used. Each section in this book specifically describes what is being done and some code for how to do it.

Even though the book covers from 1.6.4 to 1.8 it provides you with enough information for you to research if a feature has been deprecated. Though you will find almost all of the examples are completely valid with newer versions of jQuery. Tip: one of the main things to have changed in newer versions is browser detection, most other things are simply extended.

The book covers Core, UI, Mobile and plugins. I personally don't work with mobile, if I did I would give this book 6 stars as it has been a very valuable resource for everything else I've needed it for.

This book isn't your typical reference guide to understanding how to bind events, what the function val() does or how to get the selected value of a combo box. You won't find that here (you may find an example within the book though). What you will find in this book is great material you can actually use in production code. This book can be targeted for beginners, intermediate, and advanced jquery / javascript programmers. It's essentially a cookbook with some in depth examples and how you can easily bring the beauty of jquery right into your own website / work environment.
It's definitely a book to keep close by, you never know when you may need to / asked to add a specific function in your code using jquery. You may be at times tempted to use server side code to do something as simple as hiding a panel / div but the postbacks caused by server side code are annoying and aggravate your end users. This book shows you clean cut examples of how to do this via jquery with real world examples. IMHO the money you spend on this book will be made up easily due to the amount of code you can use in your own environment. To me that is priceless!
