About the Author
Sallie A. Marston is an associate professor of geography and regional development at the University of Arizona and co-author of "Places and Regions in Global Context".

Paul L. Knox is a university distinguished professor and senior fellow for international advancement at Virginia Tech University. Between 1997 and 2006 he served as dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies. He is also a member of the Department of Urban Affairs and Planning and has written many books, including Urbanization: An Introduction to Urban Geography.

Teachers should look for a different book to teach their class about this subject.

I am renting this book and it came in very good condition. I do not like the way this book reads, but that is my professor's fault for picking it. I am taking this class online and have found that this book as well as the one for our regional geography class read the same. A little difficult because it is all factual and does not read as easy as some of my psychology books. The authors don't try to relate the info or make it personal, they just state it and it's hard to remember everything because nothing sticks out to you. If I had a choice, I would look for a different book for the students that is more clear and points out important info, because reading this book is like reading a dictionary and then being tested on definitions after every letter. The information is all in the book, but there is so much that it is impossible to memorize it all, so you have to be quick at recalling page numbers and using post-its or flipping through the glossary.

This book was boring and difficult to get through...

I bought the 4th edition and probably could have used that and still gotten an A in the class with very little online supplementation. Nevertheless, this book was boring and difficult to get through. When I took Geography in High School I did not know it included so much. High School seemed to divide these topics into bite-sized portions like World History and Politics/ American gov't. This text book blurs the lines of all those and then some:
Economics
Weather
History
Politics
Geography
Education
Religion
and much more...
These topics are covered in every chapter for each region and it was a little much for me to absorb... especially in the beginning.

About the Author

David Bevington is a highly respected editor and Shakespearean scholar. He is Phyllis Fay Horton Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus. He taught drama at the University of Chicago, focusing on Shakespeare and his contemporaries (Jonson, Marlowe, Webster, Middleton, Dekker, etc.), as well as medieval drama and then the entire sweep of Western drama from Aeschylus and Sophocles down to Caryl Churchill and Tom Stoppard. In addition to courses on Shakespeare, Renaissance drama, and medieval drama, he co-taught in Theater and Performance Studies ((variously with Heidi Coleman, Director of University Theater, John Muse, English Department, and Drew Dir, resident dramaturg at Court Theatre) a two-quarter sequence called The History and Theory of Drama from the 5th century B.C. down to the present day. "One of the most learned and devoted of Shakespeareans," so called by Harold Bloom, he specializes in British drama of the Renaissance, and has edited and introduced the complete works of William Shakespeare in both the 29-volume, Bantam Classics paperback editions and the single-volume Longman edition. He also edits the Norton Anthology of Renaissance Drama and an important anthology of Medieval English Drama. Bevington's editorial scholarship is so extensive that Richard Strier, an early modern colleague at the University of Chicago, was moved to comment: "Every time I turn around, he has edited a new Renaissance text. Bevington has endless energy for editorial projects." In addition to his work as an editor, he has published studies of Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, and the Stuart Court Masque, among others, though it is for his work as an editor that he is primarily known.

Don't Believe the Naysayers

This compilation is the best I have yet seen for general to intermediate level Shakespeare studies. The editions of the plays are strong, with copious and clear annotations. Introduction to the works are up-to-date and give a solid overview of the various critical views and responses to the plays and poetry. The general introductions covering life in Tudor and Jacobean England is unusually thorough. Illustrations are clear and helpful. The drawback to this particular collection can also be considered a strength. Few undergraduate Shakespeare courses will cover the plays deleted here. Bevington concentrates on the 70% of Shakespeare's works that have elicited (at least) 95% of commentary and discussion, keeping the physical size of this edition within reason.

There is a move by certain admirers of David Allen White, a noted Shakespearean scholar, to dismiss the Shakespeare compilations edited by David Bevington. With respect to Dr. White, these reviews are neither fair nor accurate. The critical viewpoints that Dr. White--a man of strongly conservative Religious beliefs--disagrees with (White refers to Queer Theory and several other modern critical beliefs as "perverse") are not foregrounded in Bevington's introductions. These viewpoints are mentioned along with other commentary and definitions, as they should be in any work that wishes to provide clear context for the changes in criticism that have occurred over time. With clear overviews of Shakespeare's works, and literary and historical commentary that provides a solid contextual background for his writings, this edition is top notch. I will continue to use it in my courses.

Shakespeare's Greatest Hits

I always thought it was wasteful of English professors to make students buy a Complete Shakespeare when only half of the plays (at most) were studied. "The Necessary Shakespeare" provides a sensible alternative: the 20 most-often studied plays, all the sonnets, and all the critical apparatus you could want. It even has an index to characters, which you don't often see. Highly recommended.

Portable... and Dangerous

I worked out of the Bevington Shakespeare back in the nineties, before the Necessary edition was released, and let me tell you, this edition is more manageable, the paper quality higher (no onion skin here), and many of the introductions have been updated and expanded. If you're unfamiliar with the Bevington Shakespeare, you'll be impressed with the historical information included, not to mention sections on language usage.

This series is one of the best out there.

MUST OWN if you photograph females in any manner (clothed or non-clothed)

Absolutely wonderful book of information for someone comfortable with posing and working with people but needing that extra insight on boudoir.

I actually found that this book had AMAZING tips on posing women in general - clothed or not clothed. Between ways to hold their bodies, position their hands, arms and what to look for in eye tracking and angles. I think this is a must just for posing and working with the female body. It's easy to peruse and you don't feel you have to read it cover to cover. Editing tips, helpful but not critical.

I have been EXTREMELy happy with this. I know that some seasoned photographers say that this book was not helpful, so maybe it isn't for someone who has done a ton of boudoir but I feel it can really make you think outside the box and review the shots you do make. I like the authors style as it incorporates MORE than a hotel room on the bed photography which is most of what I see... I like her information on outfit guides etc.

I feel like everyone can benefit from this book but I am not a seasoned photographer.

Overall, like I said, the biggest tips I got from this was how to pose women and look at the female body. Be that you do wedding, teens for senior photos. This isn't even meaning for SEXUALLY attractive photos, but just natural looking poses that highlight a women's best stance for her body.

Useful, scholarly body of work

Just completed reading the Kindle version of this book and in short it is a useful, scholarly book that provides the novice and pro photographer with the insights boudoir photography by a working portraitist presented with clarity, depth and wisdom. You get a glimpse into the character and experience of the writer, Ms Meola as she presents photo session insights, planning issues, the joy of interacting with her clients and tips on how to bring out the best in each boudoir subject - her depth of experience and her love of teaching this subject of photography is inherent in this book. Bottom line - I highly recommend this book to those who wish to do best by their clients.

The Art of Boudoir Photography: Christa Meola explains it so well

When it comes to photographing women, especially in a boudoir setting, the name of Christa Meola will often be at the top of the list. She's an exceptional photographer in her own right, and is well known for her workshops and seminars.

Christa's book The Art of Boudoir Photography: How to Create Stunning Photographs of Women, released in late 2012, lives up to its title, as good boudoir photography is truly an art. In her workshops, she instructs photographers how to work with style and sensitivity, and her numerous location and studio events are full of innovation and sensuality, energy and feeling.

Have been following her blog for quite some time, and when an online offer came through from her publisher, Peachpit/New Riders, I grabbed it in Kindle format. At about 270 pages, it's a good one, and handy to have for the reader or photographer on the go. The author delves into how to work with women, how to flatter every size and shape, and how to bring out the best in every woman. In short, here you'll find the fundamental posing, shooting and lighting techniques that each photographer can employ to capture truly stunning photographs.

Ms. Meola has no problem with communicating with photographers or with her female clients who have signed up for one of her photo sessions, and that shines through on the pages of this book. The photos within are sensual without being overly explicit, and she clearly has the ability to teach women to recognize their individual beauty, to break through into their individual comfort zones and to celebrate the joys of their own femininity. Her boudoir photo session clients are women of all backgrounds, sizes and shapes, and she knows how to flatter even the most "curvelicious" into kicking their individual comfort zones up to a new level.

For the photographer, this book is loaded with plenty of tips and techniques, along with simple and straightforward lighting diagrams. She lists the lenses and equipment she uses along with the photos in the book, and each chapter is quite professional and well-organized. There's also an excellent hyperlinked index in the rear of the Kindle edition, making topics easy to find without having to do a search. It's like having an online mentor, a personal coach there with you. This from the author says it quite well:

About the Author
Gary Gruver is formerly the Director of Engineering for HP’s LaserJet Core Firmware Lab, and he worked at HP for 22 years. He is currently VP of Release, QA, and Operations at macys.com. Any major initiative needs a true business sponsor—someone who has truly caught the vision of agile, and who can make the business and financial decisions necessary to get huge breakthroughs to happen. Gary has also been able to bring a “manage to metrics” approach that rallies everyone to common measurable objectives without requiring lots of meeting and coordination overhead. Of course, his most critical role is buying lunch during particularly busy sprints for anyone working weekends to finish off key features. His favorite hobbies are cycling and skiing with family (he’s married with two daughters).

Mike Young is the program manager directing day-to-day efforts across our many distributed teams at HP’s LaserJet Core Firmware Lab. Mike has been involved in development of HP LaserJet Printers for 18 years, and he previously designed satellite control systems for Hughes Aircraft Company. He also is one of the strongest advocates of agile approaches and helped get the organization started down this path before anyone really knew we were doing agile. His hobbies are family (he’s married, with two daughters and two sons) and playing racquetball. In agile, we’ve found that a program manager should spend most of his/her time watching the metrics and quietly coordinating behind-the-scenes to cater to the bottleneck. In our sprint checkpoints, we tend to minimize slideware and maximize problem solving and demos of new user stories.

Pat Fulghum is architect of the HP LaserJet FutureSmart firmware and its development team’s agile toolset. Pat’s been at HP for 24 years. He found out during the past few years that his favorite escape is scuba diving in Maui with his family (he is married and has a son and a daughter). A large-scale agile initiative requires a central architect who can help maintain architectural integrity amid many pressures to do otherwise (which keeps the system enabled for the future) and who has the vision for making sure the architecture supports both firmware development and qualification. Pat still loves to get in and dig deep to solve vexing technical challenges. He also loves to find developer productivity improvements (build time, triage time) and has been the passion behind our “10x productivity improvement” vision.

Finally... A Non-fiction Story of Agile Success

I must admit that before I began reading this book I truly thought it was going to be another twisted story of an attempt at agile that failed in everyone's eyes except for those that needed to say it was a success. That is what I am used to.

It is kind of like when I am on a product reference call to CIO. The product is always great and the company who sold it is always wonderful. Why some people think the CIO is going to say they didn't do their due diligence when picking a vendor, and the product and company we are asking about sucks, is beyond me?

They never do. The same is true of almost all the agile projects I have seen. They end over budget, buggy, and pretty much the same way most projects end that use any other process, but they are always deemed a success by those involved.

I was ready to tell myself I was correct in my assumption when I got blasted on page 2 with the Agile Manifesto, but decided to give them to the end of the chapter. In the next section of the chapter they caught my attention with the last of a list of 6 topics which was their take on Agile/Lean Principles. Number 6 was practitioners should define agile/lean practices.

I find myself saying the same thing all the time on a ton of different projects. When it comes to leading large complex agile projects, if you have not come up through the ranks being mentored on successful agile projects, and learning through experience, not books, you have no business defining process and leading the project. I have met very few people who agree with this line of thought and it impressed me that the authors did.

That one line of thought pushed me to read chapter 2. Again I was pleasantly surprised with the authors discussing the need to engineer a solution. Not implement a process, but engineer a solution. By the end of this chapter the authors had done a great job summarizing where their teams use their resources now and assembled some excellent development objectives.

Another thing the authors discussed was the capacity of their organization to absorb change. This is something that is almost always overlooked when bringing in new development processes, agile or not, this is something that needs to be looked at throughout the entire organization. This is usually just isolated to the development teams, but the new processes affect every department when they are implemented correctly.

At the end of the chapter the authors list their achievements:
-2008 to present overall development costs reduced by 40%
-Number of programs under development increased by 140%
-Development costs per program down 78%
-Firmware resources now driving innovation increased by a factor of 8 (from 5% working on new features to 40%)

I am sure these seem exaggerated, and that is what I believed until I read the next two chapters. Over the course of the next two chapters the authors fully won me over. They proceeded to outline implementing a Software Product Line using their own process language. I know from my own experience that when Software Product Line Engineering is done correctly it will always produce improvements like those listed above.

The authors nail exactly what enables their ability to implement an iterative agile process, and that would be investing in the right architecture. Any sizable project that doesn't invest in the architecture and claims they are able to pull off the project in an agile way is full of crap, period.

Product Line Engineering is the process that offers the highest level of agility over all other processes. It is tailorable for different levels of ceremony and is therefore able to run lighter than Scrum given the right team and right environment.

One of the main benefits of Product Line Engineering is the ability to collect metrics and in Chapter 5 the authors identify how to take advantage of them the right way, which is not to manage by metrics, but to use the metrics to understand where to have conversations about what is not getting done. Chapter 5 also outlines their iterative process.

The book continues to cover excellent process practices throughout the rest of the book, and they are applied to a real world project which drives home their value even more. Below are all the chapters included in the book.

Unlike a lot of books I have read on implementing agile practices on large scale projects I believe the results of this project were reported accurately.

I also believed the results were achieved with an iterative agile process. They are honest about the issues they ran into and they hammer on prototyping for architectural issues, which is definitely the way to go.

The author's writing styles make the book an easy read and the story that is told along the way is a very interesting one. I did not get bored with even one page of this book.

This book is a must read for any CIO, Enterprise Architect, Software Architect, Project Manager, or other IT roles in charge of or involved with large scale initiatives that they are hoping to pull off in an agile way. The book tells the story of how to achieve success based on a real world success, not a made up fictional case study.

Large-Scale Agile Development

This is a story written by the people (director of engineering, program manager, and architect) who were the part of the team who applied agile principles on a large scale development. A story about the ongoing innovation and delivery of a multimillion dollar business.

Before they started their environment was fast changing, around 400 people distributed around the world, diversified culture (four states, three continents), firmware for MFP devices (multiple product support, millions lines of code), and architecture changes. The firmware development cost drivers were 95% and just 5% adding innovation:
- 10% of staffing was for "build bosses"
- 20% of resources were spent doing detailed planning for future feature
- 25% of resources were consumed porting the existing codebase and features from one product to another
- 15% of development costs were for manual test execution
- 25% of development resources were deployed supporting existing products

After more than 3 years long journey, organization's culture changes, they reached point of 40% for innovations.

How they did it? They identified their current business realities and strategic objectives: cost and cycle-time drivers (biggest pain points) and value proposition. They applied agile and lean core principles and practices in steps, didn't follow all of them blindly and at the end they've come up with their own top six agile/lean principles:
1. Reduce overhead and waste (keep it simple).
2. Don't overfill your plate (limited WIP - Work in Process)
3. Cater to the bottleneck.
4. Integrate early and often.
5. Planning rhythm.
6. Practitioners should define agile/lean practices.

They reduced coordination and meeting overhead by putting metrics monitoring at everyone's fingertips. They reached 10x productivity improvements using continuous integration, automated multilevel qualification, user story definition, and light-touch capacity prediction.

Important messages:
- Often the only way to know what works is to find out what doesn't.
- You can't start by trying to do everything. Start the journey and be ready to adjust and learn how to make your organization more productive along the way.
- Be guided by the power of agile principles applied to your business and its unique personality, opportunities, and constraints
- Adapt them to your business needs, and definitely put them into practice and follow your favorite agile methodology. But frequently go back to those principles and confirm you're still aligned with the ones that are critical for your success.

The first step of this transformation is changing the mindset of the organization to appreciate the inherent uncertainty of software development.

Agile Wisdom and Techniques

I am a software project management professional involved in implementing Agile practices into organizations. I enjoyed this book a lot, and was able to take away a good deal of practices and tips I can implement immediately. The book is written in an easy, conversational tone, and it feels like sitting down with the authors over a beer discussing Agile, what works and doesn't work for their company.

There are a number of books in the market that will give you the theory of Agile and Scrum, and will present to you the methods that strictly adhere to the "pure" version of the particular methodology (the Schwaber books for example). While those treatises have its place, I often wished there were more books on implementing Agile methods in large, complex, and high performing organizations. This book fills that void. The authors unabashedly declare which methods are dropped, and which are modified to fit HP's culture and way of working. I find that information is just as valuable as recounting the textbook elements.

For me, one of the pearls of wisdom is in Chapter 7 titled "Convincing the Business: Agile Planning is Okay" (p. 86). In my experience, trying to convince business partners that moving away from the rigid schedules of waterfall makes good sense is often one of IT's biggest battles in adopting Agile techniques. I will be reusing what was set forth by the authors in my practice.

It's clear that Guver, Young, and Fulghun have fought hard to drive their departments and management chain within HP to bring in Agile. Their book is chock full of examples and war stories on that journey. If the reader is looking for some real world illustrations of getting Agile to work, pick up this book.

About the Author
Jeffrey Bennett
Jeffrey Bennett holds a B.A. (1981) in biophysics from the University of California, San Diego, and an M.S. and Ph.D. (1987) in astrophysics from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He has taught at every level from preschool through graduate school, including more than 50 college classes in astronomy, physics, mathematics, and education. He served 2 years as a visiting senior scientist at NASA headquarters, where he created NASA’s “IDEAS” program, started a program to fly teachers aboard NASA’s airborne observatories (including SOFIA), and worked on numerous educational programs for the Hubble Space Telescope and other space science missions. He also proposed the idea for and helped develop both the Colorado Scale Model Solar System on the CU-Boulder campus and the Voyage Scale Model Solar System on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. In addition to this astronomy textbook, he is also lead author of college-level textbooks in astrobiology, mathematics, and statistics (all from Pearson); of critically acclaimed two books for the general public including , On the Cosmic Horizon (Pearson Addison-Wesley, 2001) and Beyond UFOs (Princeton University Press, 2008/2011) and Math for Life (Roberts & Co, 2012); and an of the award-winning series of children’s books that includes Max Goes to the Moon, Max Goes to Mars, Max Goes to Jupiter, and Max’s Ice Age AdventureThe Wizard Who Saved the World. Megan Donahue
Megan Donahue is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University. Her current research is mainly about using X-ray, UV, infrared, and visible light to study clusters of galaxies: their contents–dark matter, hot gas, galaxies, active galactic nuclei–and what they reveal about the contents of the universe and how galaxies form and evolve. She grew up on a farm in Nebraska and received an S.B.. in physics from MIT, where she began her research career as an X-ray astronomer. She has a Ph.D. in astrophysics from the University of Colorado. Her Ph.D. thesis on theory and optical observations of intergalactic and intracluster gas won the 1993 Trumpler Award from the Astronomical Society for the Pacific for an outstanding astrophysics doctoral dissertation in North America. She continued postdoctoral research as a Carnegie Fellow at Carnegie Observatories in Pasadena, California, and later as an STScI Institute Fellow at Space Telescope. Megan was a staff astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute until 2003, when she joined the MSU faculty. Megan is married to Mark Voit, and they collaborate on many projects, including this textbook and the raising of their children, Michaela, Sebastian, and Angela. Between the births of Sebastian and Angela, Megan qualified for and ran the Boston Marathon. These days, Megan runs trails, orienteers, and plays piano and bass guitar whenever her children allow it.

Nicholas Schneider
Nicholas Schneider is an associate professor in the Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences at the University of Colorado and a researcher in the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. He received his B.A. in physics and astronomy from Dartmouth College in 1979 and his Ph.D. in planetary science from the University of Arizona in 1988. In 1991, he received the National Science Foundation’s Presidential Young Investigator Award. His research interests include planetary atmospheres and planetary astronomy, with a focus on the odd case of Jupiter’s moon Io. He enjoys teaching at all levels and is active in efforts to improve undergraduate astronomy education. Off the job, he enjoys exploring the outdoors with his family and figuring out how things work.

Mark Voit
Mark Voit is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University. He earned his A.B. in astrophysical sciences at Princeton University and his Ph.D. in astrophysics at the University of Colorado in 1990. He continued his studies at the California Institute of Technology, where he was a research fellow in theoretical astrophysics, and then moved on to Johns Hopkins University as a Hubble Fellow. Before going to Michigan State, Mark worked in the Office of Public Outreach at the Space Telescope, where he developed museum exhibitions about the Hubble Space Telescope and helped design NASA’s award-winning HubbleSite. His research interests range from interstellar processes in our own galaxy to the clustering of galaxies in the early universe. He is married to coauthor Megan Donahue, and cooks terrific meals for her and their three children. Mark likes getting outdoors whenever possible and particularly enjoys running, mountain biking, canoeing, orienteering, and adventure racing. He is also author of the popular book Hubble Space Telescope: New Views of the Universe.

BOOK SHIPPED FROM ACROSS THE WORLD?????

Every other textbook that I've purchased through Amazon has been received within a few days. This took weeks. Homework was due, professor said she'd wait no longer. Had to purchase an e-text access card online through the publisher (for $90) to do the homework. Textbook and access card finally arrived wrapped together in plastic Needed the book, not the access card. Asked SuperBook Deals if I could return just the unopened/unused access card, they (indirectly) told me no (twice). They will only give refunds if the purchase has not been unwrapped. No refund for me, no future purchases for them.

Rip off. Even though clearly advertised as including access card, it did not have one. I could have bought the book alone for half the price. I should have read the reviews.

Missing Pages

Ordered the product as new and from Amazon. Unlike others, my access code worked fine and the book arrived in an unused condition. However, I purchased the book and not just the access code because I like reading from a textbook and being able to mark it, especially when the material gets complicated. Now that I am entering finals time and reading the last chapters I have discovered that about 200 pages (Skips from Chapter 14 to Chapter 24) are missing from the book.
