This set was the best option

This book came exactly like is was supposed to. (I purchased it new) The MyMathLab code was placed right in the cover of the book and it came with the graphing calculator manual as well. All shrink wrapped. Much cheaper than the campus bookstore.

My professor suggested that I get this version since I was a non-traditional student heading back to class after a long time. He was right. I'll need it for this class and a future class for reference. The book is on the MyMathLab also but if you need to reference it later you won't have access to it after your course ends, which is why I sprang for the whole set. That and I can make notes in it.

Keep in mind that if you get this set used or rent it, the code will not work! Each class you take you need a new code. Amazon sells the code separately. If you are wanting everything (book, manual and MyMathLab code) you have to select NEW!

ACCESS CODE INVALID ON TWO BOOKS!! SHIT PRODUCT FROM AMAZON!

I purchased TWO of these books for my twin boys who are in college. The product detail shows brand new book with access code- BUT THE CODES ARE INVALID! Invalid per the website that needs the codes. My twins are now behind in homework and are unable to take online quizes, unless I go to the college and spend another $160 on new access codes! I am now out $500 thanks to AMAZON selling me a shit product that does not do what is advertised!

interesting articles

I bought this book for my English class. I thought it has many interesting articles that I enjoyed reading (I do not like to read usually). The articles are about our recent lives and the problems that our American culture face everyday. I have a friend who asked me to borrow the book after I am done because he read few good articles in an hour and he wanted to read the whole book.

Great text, but out of date. The 4th edition is significantly better (though it too is becoming obsolete!). Both editions are well organized, with thought-provoking questions that help both analytical and writing skills.

About the Author
For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student's perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience, along with stories from the field-including those of former students, now in health careers-that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her texts and laboratory manuals are known. In her ongoing commitment to students and her realization of the challenges they face, Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women returning to college after a hiatus or who are attending college for the first time and would otherwise be unable to continue with their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. MariebScience Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and generously contributed to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory that bears her name. In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor. Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings "InterActive Physiology¨" CD-ROM series, and is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS). "Anatomy & Physiology," Second Edition is the latest expression of her commitment to student needs in their pursuit of the study of A&P.

Definitively a book to keep

I am French and I bought this teach-yourself book in order to improve my English writing and speaking skills. The book is great especially if you are motivated and you want to make progress. Reading and understanding what you read help you to practice a "politically" correct English language, and encourage you to acquire a critical thinking. You have an interesting selection of authors's extracts that illustrate step by step and through different styles the chapters'main goals. I want to keep this book as a reference "in case of". I recommend you to have a competent person around to correct your style and your mistakes, because if the book gives you pieces of advice, it still remains a book, but a great one!

About the Author

Ruth E. Heisler is a senior instructor in the Department of Integrative Physiology at the University of Colorado at Boulder where she teaches and coordinates several courses, including Human Anatomy, Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy, and Forensic Biology. Ms. Heisler received her B.S. in Biology from the University of Minnesota, and her M.A. in Biology from the University of Colorado. She has been an instructor at the University of Colorado for 14 years. At the University of Colorado, Ms. Heisler has worked extensively with the Science Education Initiative to improve both the teaching and understanding of scientific material at the undergraduate level. In addition, she has been involved in academic outreach through workshops with the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and the Biological Sciences Initiative. She has been a consultant on projects with the Center for Human Simulation, working with data generated through the Visible Human Project. Additionally, she is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), where she has presented workshops on the use of Practice Anatomy Lab as an assessment tool in the classroom.
Ms. Heisler has been deeply involved in the development of Practice Anatomy Lab for nearly five years, as co-author of versions 2.0 and 3.0. She has also authored a custom laboratory manual developed for a large, cadaver-based Human Anatomy Lab course.

In her spare time, Ms. Heisler enjoys spending time in the mountains and traveling with her husband and two young sons.

Nora Hebert currently teaches undergraduate courses in Anatomy and Physiology at Red Rocks Community College near Denver, Colorado. Although most of her students are undergraduates, primarily interested in the allied health professions, Dr. Hebert has also taught graduate-level Human Physiology for the College’s Physician Assistant Program. Dr. Hebert received a Ph.D. in Endocrinology from the University of California at Berkeley. Although her research interests have primarily been in basic science, she became familiar with the research phase of drug development while doing a postdoctoral fellowship in the private sector. It was during this fellowship that Dr. Hebert decided to pursue teaching as a profession. Dr. Hebert is an active faculty member at Red Rocks, serving on the faculty senate, the honors program committee, and the admissions and executive committees for the Physician Assistant Program. She is also part of the College’s Campus Green Initiative. Dr. Hebert has consulted in the development of an interactive virtual knee, known as the Explorable Virtual Human, with the Center for Human Simulation at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. She has also been involved with the Visible Human Dissector program, advising K-12 teachers and postsecondary instructors on how best to implement the Dissector in their classrooms. Dr. Hebert has been deeply involved in the development of Practice Anatomy Lab for nearly five years, as co-author of versions 2.0 and 3.0. She is also the author of over 60 A&P Flix™ animations covering muscle physiology, neurophysiology, and muscle origins, actions, insertions and innervations.

Jett Chinn is an instructor of Human Anatomy in the Science and Technology Division of Cañada College (Redwood City, CA), and also the Life and Earth Sciences Department at the College of Marin (Kentfield, CA). Mr. Chinn has 20 years of experience teaching Human Anatomy at several Bay Area institutions. He has taught Stomatology courses for first-year dental students at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine; undergraduate-level human anatomy courses at San Francisco State University; lower extremity anatomy and general human anatomy lab courses at California College of Podiatric Medicine; and general anatomy lab courses at Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Mr. Chinn’s work in the classroom has inspired students to pursue careers in nursing, physical and occupational therapy, radiology, medicine, dentistry and other health-related fields. Mr. Chinn received a B.A. in general biology from San Francisco State University and a B.F.A. in painting from the California College of Arts and Crafts.

Karen M. Krabbenhoft is a senior lecturer in the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. During her 18-year career, Dr. Krabbenhoft’s focus has been on teaching students at all levels of their educational process, including undergraduate, physician assistant and medical students. She has been recognized by the University with several awards, including two Medical Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Awards for the Basic Sciences (1998, 2007), the Dean’s Teaching Award (2000), and the Gender Equity Award (1998). Most recently, Dr Krabbenhoft was selected by the graduating class to receive the Pre-Clinical Teaching Award in 2011.

Dr. Krabbenhoft earned her Ph.D. in Anatomy from the University of Wisconsin. After working as a research specialist, she entered the classroom to teach a wide variety of courses including Histology and Organology, Human Gross Anatomy, Functional Neuroscience, and Medical Pathology. Dr. Krabbenhoft is always searching for better resources to facilitate students’ learning of human anatomy and has worked with academic publishers as a reviewer and advisor for several textbooks and media products. Outside the University, Dr. Krabbenhoft enjoys spending time with her husband and children at their lake home, photographing her children’s athletic events, and crafting with stained glass.

Olga Malakhova is an assistant scholar in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville. Dr. Malakhova began teaching Gross Anatomy and Neuroscience in 1972 at Odessa Medical Institute in Ukraine. She has been teaching first-, second- and fourth-year medical students, as well as several Clinical Residency programs, at the University of Florida for the past 18 years. Dr. Malakhova’s teaching excellence has been recognized by several awards, including six Exemplary Teacher awards from the University of Florida (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010). She was also recognized as a Master Educator by the University’s Medical Education Faculty Development Program (2006). Dr. Malakhova received her M.D. from Odessa Medical Institute in Ukraine, and her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the Brain Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in Moscow. She has published numerous medical research papers, including two books for medical students. Dr. Malakhova is a member of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists (AACA). She is also an active reviewer of the AACA monthly publication. Outside the University, Dr. Malakhova’s hobbies include listening to classical music, reading, enjoying water sports, and traveling with friends and family.

Truly a great resource

Studying Anatomy can be difficult but this has made studying much easier. Our instructor does not have in depth labs and this fills in the parts missed.

The histology section alone is worth it's weight in gold.

If you have the book that goes with this, it is a great supplement.

About the Author
Robert Clair has been doing OS X development for more than ten years and iOS development since the original iOS SDK became available. He writes apps for his own company, Chromatic Bytes, LLC, and is also a leading OS X and iOS contract developer who specializes in the complete design and coding of graphics intensive programs and in repairing defective Objective-C code. He recently served as lead programmer for The Street’s iPad app, and for Heritage Associates’ iPad auction catalog. Through Chromatic Bytes, he created the innovative iOS apps ZeusDraw Mobile and Orfeo. He holds a Ph.D. in experimental physics from the University of California, Berkeley.

'THE' Objective-C book to read!!

If I had to give this book a one word description, I would say it is 'balanced'. In the beginning of the book the author mentions that he does not want to right one of those books that list a little code and then explains the code, changes the code, explains those changes and so on and so on.

At first he scared me. I have read some insanely wordy programming and engineering books. I have a much harder time getting through those than the type the author described. I was afraid this book would be one of those that I don't get anything out of except war stories from the author's career. That would not be all bad if the stories had anything to do with the book. I am happy to report that is not what happened.

I found the author had just the right amount of discussion around the different language features he was covering. I thought that the offer had a very no nonsense approach to all the topic that he covered.

The book is broken down into four parts. Below I have listed the three different parts, and the chapters that they contain.

One thing I really liked about the book was that the author did not use ARC throughout the book. He decided that reference counting is a very important topic to understand. The logic is that you're going to have to work with legacy code that is not going to be using ARC. There's much more legacy code out there then there is new code. He does take the time to explain how ARC works later in the book and the advanced concepts part.

I thought that I would lightly skim the first few chapters that cover the foundation of Objective-C. But as I was skimming, I found the author's writing style very nice to read, and therefore I ended up reading it word for word.

I must admit that I have been using messaging for a while now, but I never really understood messaging within the Objective-C context until I read this author's explanation of it. The author also has excellent coverage of properties and all of the different ways they can be declared.

The chapter on blocks was also very well put together. The author starts out by explaining function pointers and the issues that you can run into using them. He then does a very thorough job of covering blocks.

Every chapter in the book is a gem and overall I found this author's writing style made the book very easy to read. This book will stay by my side. It's not only a good cover to cover read, it is also a very good reference.

I would recommend this book as the place to start for anyone coming from a different find which such as C# or Java, and also as the place to start for anybody looking to get into building applications with Objective-C.

You should read this book if you want to become a solid objective-c programmer

This book has definitely helped me to understand objective-C at a deeper level.

The author definitely has a deep understanding of the inner workings of objective-c and the writing skills to present them clearly. Robert Clair provides a solid foundation in objective-c to allow the user to learn, at a fundamental level, how to program in the language.

I have read quite a few books on iOS and objective-C. Very few get beyond a very shallow discussion of how to do the most basic of things. But to really "get" how it all works you need a book or two like this.

The author goes into detail about memory management and what actually goes on under the covers when you use ARC. Memory management is a key concept in objective-C and I've never heard it explained better than in this book. The book was definitely worth it just for the discussion of memory management.

No single book will make you an expert in objective-c, but this book will definitely help you in ways no other book I've read has. It's definitely, on my must have list.

Not a good start for newbies

Just to clarify, I've taken a few programming classes at the college level, but I'm still a novice. I want to learn Objective C because I have some ideas for iOS apps.

I know C pretty well, and I don't remember who recommended this book to me, but it's REALLY hard to follow. Some of the quotes in the beginning of the book come from supposed critics giving it glowing reviews:

"Enlightening new programmers and seasoned pros alike."

"Whether you're a novice or professional programmer"

"Which will allow a competent programmer to begin writing Objective-C code."

The third quote is probably the most accurate. This book assumes the reader has a lot of knowledge, and uses terms associated with Object Oriented languages without explaining them. And, as someone who has already studied C, the author uses terms not associated with C with no explanation. It's frustrating trying to follow the text if I have to Google terms to get an explanation of what it is.

I'm the type that likes to go along with a book and do the exercises. The first exercise is, of course, a Hello World program (Ch 4). The example and explanation of using objects and calling those objects is great. At the end of each chapter, there are exercises to expand upon what was covered. One exercise says, "Modify the Greeter class to use a Greeting object instead of an NSString ... To make this work place this code at the top of Greeter.h: @class Greeting;"

The problem with this is that classes aren't covered until chapter 6! In the very first exercise, the reader is asked to do something that isn't covered until later in the book. I have no idea what @class does! After reading ahead, the book continues to reference classes and subclasses with no explanation of the vocabulary.

Overall, I think the book would probably be great for a competent programmer, like the quote above says. If you're a student who's taken a few programming classes, I'd skip this one. I thought my experience with C would prepare me for this book, but that definitely wasn't the case. If you're an amateur programmer with some knowledge in OO languages, you may feel at home, but I can't help but think there are better books out there.
