About the Author
"Eric Chaisson." Eric holds a doctorate in astrophysics from Harvard University, where he spent ten years on the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. For five years, Eric was a Senior Scientist and Director of Educational Programs at the Space Telescope Science Institute and Adjunct Professor of Physics at Johns Hopkins University. He then joined Tufts University, where he is now Professor of Physics, Professor of Education, and Director of the Wright Center for Innovative Science Education. He has written nine books on astronomy, which have received such literary awards as the Phi Beta Kappa Prize, two American Institute of Physics Awards, Harvard's Smith-Weld Prize for Literary Merit, and the Walter P. Kistler Book Award. He has published more than 100 scientific papers in professional journals, and has also received Harvard's Bok Prize for original contributions to astrophysics. "Steve McMillan." Steve holds a bachelor's and master's degree in Mathematics from Cambridge University and a doctorate in Astronomy from Harvard University. He held post-doctoral positions at the University of Illinois and Northwestern University, where he continued his research in theoretical astrophysics, star clusters, and numerical modeling. Steve is currently Distinguished Professor of Physics at Drexel University and a frequent visiting researcher at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study and the University of Tokyo. He has published more than 50 scientific papers in professional journals.

Thoughtful, articulate, and readable rhetoric.

"Writing Arguments" shines like a beacon in the dark and murky waters of composition textbooks. Although some have critiqued it for its "passive" approach, I support both the approach and the layout as the best way I've found to approach basic argumentation. A solid understanding of audience (in particular) is vital for successful writing, and it's also something inexperienced, self-focused writers often lack.

Rather than pushing a "win at all costs" or "go with your gut" victory-based approach to rhetoric, the authors promote rhetorical writing grounded in Perelman's audience concepts, Toulmin's warrants, and Aristotelian enthymeme. By encouraging students to locate common ground (warrants) between themselves and their real or imagined audience, this book sets them up to engage in rhetoric as participants in a broader civic culture. And this is the rhetoric that will ultimately equip them to survive in the real world--where knowing what a client or an opponent wants and believes is critical to "winning" the argument in a lasting and productive way.

No theory or approach is perfect (not that I've found so far at least), and a rigid application of the Toulmin model or the schema as outlined in this book will inevitably bog down writers as they move into more advanced composition. But that, afterall, is why we teachers are there. By focusing students' attention on the basic principles in the book--audience awareness, orderliness, situational groundedness, etc.--rather than forcing them to memorize rules or endlessly construct Toulmin models, I may just be able to help my students develop a new respect for argumentation as discovery (and themselves as rhetors) in the public sphere. And if we can do that, maybe there's a little civil light in the civic culture tunnel after all.

In LOVE with this text

As an instructor, I am in LOVE with this text. I teach an argument-based research composition course and this text has improved the effectiveness of my teaching methods while at the same time making learning enjoyable for my students. The text is easy to read and uses language familiar with students of all ages (I teach at a community college and as a result the age range is tremendous). In addition, the book includes relevant examples that students can further relate to. I have taught this course previously using another textbook for three semesters and I dreaded the use of the previous textbook. Now, teaching this course, while using this text for the first time, I get excited creating my class agenda. The activities included in the text allows for the students to foster dynamic discussion. I have never before LOVED textbook this much. I look forward to continuing using this text.

I have just started reading the first 4 chapters. It sticks to the point of what you need with learning how to write a successful argumentation paper. I have ADHD and I am able to understand and write with the instructions in this book

A must have for any developer building Windows 8 App with JavaScript of any level

Although I started with Cold Fusion for application development, I did plenty brochureware sites with HTML. I believe the version was HTML 2.0 for IE 2.0. I lived in the browser world for years doing Cold Fusion, ASP, and HTML sites. When winforms and Smart Client with web services emerged I changed my religion. Since then I have been avoiding the browser whenever possible since.

For the past couple of years my extent of using simple HTML has been limited to writing blogs and book reviews. Simple HTML means no ASP.NET or ASP.NET MVC. I have used HTML/JavaScript/CSS a lot as a byproduct of building ASP.NET and ASP.NET MVC applications for public consumption. Internal enterprise applications I will still push for using WPF and web services over ASP.NET or ASP.NET MVC, but I lose that battle a lot, especially when the developers have never learned WPF (XAML) and have no interest in learning anything new.

When it comes to Windows Store Apps my first choice will always be XAML with C# or C++. The problem is I am going to end up fighting the same battle with the web developers that don't like learning anything new. They are going to turn to HTML/JavaScript/CSS to build their Windows Store Apps.

Microsoft has recreated the same type of migration path as they did for the VB6 developers to move to VB.NET. The problem with that migration was tons of really bad VB.NET being written. After running into a lot of VB.NET projects that performed very badly and were very buggy I refused to allow VB.NET on my projects whenever I could.

The problem was VB6 programmers would not learn OOP and continued to code like they were still in the VB6 world. When I made them switch to C# that seemed to force them to learn more about .NET and that really helped improve their OOP skills. I never had anything against VB.NET coded correctly, the problem was most people didn’t code it correctly.

My fear of web developers moving to a mobile client application development environment with a requirement for natural user interfaces using touch is that we are going to see some atrocious applications being built. Windows Store Apps development is new enough that I have not had to deal with a lot of cleanup of bad HTML/JavaScript/CSS development yet. If I do start running into it, I will be adopting the same line of thought I had for VB.NET on projects. Meaning if it is my call, all development on my projects will be done using XAML with C# or C++. I really hope that does not happen again.

If you are one of those web developers that are planning on using your HTML/JavaScript/CSS, please take the time to read this book and other books on mobile device development and natural user interfaces. You are no longer developing for the browser!

With all that said, this book is a great place to start learning how to use your HTML/JavaScript/CSS to develop Windows Store Apps the right way. Below are the chapters included in the book.

This book does a great job of covering development on Windows 8 with JavaScript and introducing architectural and design concerns that need to be considered on mobile devices. It does a great job of covering all the controls in and out of the context of touch. It injects thoughts on performance concerns with all the topics that need to worry about it.

The application state coverage is an important topic to understand and a must read chapter for new Windows 8 App developers.

I thought they did a really good job of covering Shell Contracts and Shell Integration. They are one of my favorite features in Windows 8.

The last chapter of the book does an awesome job of showing us how to go through a submission to the Microsoft Windows Store.

The book ends with two appendices. The first is an overview of JavaScript for C-Family programmers. I thought they did a pretty good job of assembling a lot of topics into a format which allowed them to cover a lot in a little space. The second appendix is an overview of HTML5 and CSS. It is all short and concise, but has a lot of good coverage.

I did find a couple of things missing that I would have like to see covered. One was the Windows.UI.Input.Inking APIs. The was no coverage at all. This is one of the main features I am using in the XAML project I am building. Another topic I would have liked to have seen more on in is using SQLite. So far all the books that I have read on Windows 8 Apps tell you that it's available, but they don't explain how to use it. The apps I am working on are going to need a robust local data cache, and App Data and User Data are not going to be able to handle it. Security was also only lightly touched on. There could have more on security.

The code samples are very well organized and usable. The best part about them is they all work. That is not always the case anymore. I recently purchased a book I had been really looking forward to getting my hands on. It had 11 projects included as samples and none of them worked. After going back and forth with the author I threw the book on a shelf and decided to not even bother with it. He fixed three of them by the third round of updates. That gave me very little confidence in the advice he would offer in a book.

All in all I thought this book was a great read. The authors writing style made reading it a pleasure. Not all technical authors can do that. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking at getting into building Windows 8 Apps with JavaScript.

This book is probably your best best at writing a Windows 8 Metro app, "properly".

I had previously found the MSDN documentation on this subject lacking at best, but this book is impeccable. This book was instrumental for explaining fundamental concepts and the big picture when it comes to writing these applications.

About the Author
Scott Powers holds the title of distinguished professor, and is also director of the Center for Exercise Science at the University of Florida. He has been teaching for over 20 years, and was named Teacher of the Year at UF in 1992. Scott served as president of the Southeastern Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine in 1986, and is the co-author of another textbook, Exercise Physiology: Theory and Application to Fitness and Performance, Eighth Edition, published by McGraw-Hill. As a member of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI) Sports Medicine Review Board and the editorial board for the Journal of Applied Physiology, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, the International Journal of Sports Medicine, and the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, he is a well-known and highly respected individual in the field of exercise physiology.

Stephen Dodd is a professor in the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology at the University of Florida. He has been teaching for more than 20 years, and has won numerous awards, including the Teacher of the Year award in 1997. He has won the annual “Instructional Resources Grant” from UF every year since 1991, allowing him to make innovations in use of multimedia in his classroom. He has held numerous chairs in committees at UF.

Erica Jackson is an assistant professor in the Department of Public & Allied Health Sciences at Delaware State University. Beware - pages can be missing from the used edition

I couldn't believe it. I'm working in my class and guess what? I'm missing like nine pages that were torn out from this book. Unbelievable. I thought that I could save my money renting from amazon but it turned out to be a complete mistake. I won't do it again after this. I ended up having to buy an emergency kindle edition for $67.00 to save my hide so I could do my assignments on time. I'm disgusted. Thanks for checking the quality of the product before renting it out to people!

Staple of College English classes.

I bought this USED. Better prices than campus bookstore or locally. The used copy shipped quickly and was in very good condition considering you can tell it had multiple previous owners.

The book is pretty basic, with lots of examples of essays, in all black and white with some photos. Overall it was okay for class and I found my self reading essays that did not have to do with assignments. Buy this book used you will not be disappointed and plan to resell.

About the Author
Marvin Bittinger For over thirty-eight years, Professor Marvin L. Bittinger has been teaching math at the university level. Since 1968, he has been employed at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis, and is now professor emeritus of mathematics education. Professor Bittinger has authored over 190 publications on topics ranging from basic mathematics to algebra and trigonometry to applied calculus. He received his BA in mathematics from Manchester College and his PhD in mathematics education from Purdue University. Special honors include Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy and his election to the Manchester College Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1999. His hobbies include hiking in Utah, baseball, golf, and bowling. Professor Bittinger has also had the privilege of speaking at many mathematics conventions, most recently giving a lecture entitled "Baseball and Mathematics." In addition, he also has an interest in philosophy and theology, in particular, apologetics. Professor Bittinger currently lives in Carmel, Indiana with his wife Elaine. He has two grown and married sons, Lowell and Chris, and four granddaughters. David Ellenbogen David Ellenbogen has taught math at the college level for twenty-two years, spending most of that time in the Massachusetts and Vermont community college systems, where he has served on both curriculum and developmental math committees. He has also taught at St. Michael's College and The University of Vermont. Professor Ellenbogen has been active in the Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges since 1985, having served on its Developmental Mathematics Committee and as a delegate, and has been a member ofthe Mathematical Association of America since 1979. He has authored dozens of publications on topics ranging from prealgebra to calculus and has delivered lectures at numerous conferences on the use of language in mathematics. Professor Ellenbogen received his BA in mathematics from Bates College and his MA in community college mathematics education from The University of Massachusetts at Amherst. A co-founder of the Colchester Vermont Recycling Program, Professor Ellenbogen has a deep love for the environment and the outdoors, especially in his home state of Vermont. In his spare time, he enjoys playing keyboard in the band Soularium, volunteering as a community mentor, hiking, biking, and skiing. He has two sons, Monroe and Zack.

Not the worst math book ever.....

.... but probably not the best, either.

I purchased this book for an online college algebra course. The college book store only sold the book with MyMathLab included... for four times what I paid for a used copy in good condition on Amazon! (We did not use MyMathLab at all, by the way. Check with your teachers to see if this is really necessary, as some colleges get kickbacks from textbook publishers for only selling new books, proprietary versions of books, or books with unnecessary access codes.)

I'm terrible at math. Add to that the fact that my online course included no video lectures, little discussion, and almost no help from the teacher, and what it added up to is essentially an independent study course. The tests were online, but that's about it. The main resource for my class was this textbook...... and I got an A.

So, by reading through the book and working out the odd numbered problems, I DID learn quite a bit. (The book includes the answers to odd-numbered problems only... This is pretty typical of math books.) However, I had to look up additional examples and information on the Internet in order to understand many topics. I do think the book could be improved in the following ways:

1) The book combines steps in several places, making it difficult or confusing to figure out how the author got from one step to another. This is particularly true in the sections about finding the squares and matrices (chapters 3 and 6). I would like it much better if the book went through the problems step-by-step.

2) It uses unconventional approaches to solving problems. My husband is working on a doctorate in engineering. He's very good at math and has a lot of experience using algebra. He tried to explain to me how to do some problems when I had questions. His explanations weren't much help, though, because they were totally different from the book. When he looked at the book, he said he had never seen problems done the way they are done in this book. That isn't necessarily a bad thing - just because an approach is not often taught does not mean it is wrong; it just means that you may have to learn different ways to solve similar problems in other classes.

3) Formulas and equations are sometimes difficult to find. The text is somewhat dense and specific information is not always well-highlighted. While theorems are set aside in colored boxes, equations are not. It would be nice if there were an index of formulas, theorems, and equations. Also, later chapters in the book occasionally reference topics from previous chapters. It would be VERY helpful if the author would cite the chapter and section where the topic was previously discussed in the book and if the book would re-print all relevant formulas in the later sections of the book. Instead, if I needed to use a formula from chapter 3 to do a problem in chapter 7,for example, I had to scan through several pages of dense material in chapters 2, 3, and 4 to find the necessary formula.

Clear and easy to follow.

I read this book as a refresher of the high school algebra I'd forgotten (or slept through). This book flows well from one topic to the next. Unlike my high school textbooks, this book carefully covers everything you need to know before the practice questions - I never felt lost or hopelessly confused.

Problems are worked out

I needed this for CTC Algebra #1314 and but didn't buy the textbook so I could save a little bit of money. My teacher said I could use the previous version ( 5th Edition ) if I wanted to so I bought that book used. This 6th Edition Student Solutions Manual and most of the problems are worked out for you so you can see how they got the answer. If you're good at math and only need to see how each problem is worked out then go ahead and buy this book and save some money. I bought mine Used and it came in looking brand new so thank u to my seller.
