About the Author

Marvin Bittinger has been teaching math at the university level for more than thirty-eight years. Since 1968, he has been employed at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis, and is now professor emeritus of mathematics education. Professor Bittinger has authored over 190 publications on topics ranging from basic mathematics to algebra and trigonometry to applied calculus. He received his BA in mathematics from Manchester College and his PhD in mathematics education from Purdue University. Special honors include Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy and his election to the Manchester College Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1999. His hobbies include hiking in Utah, baseball, golf, and bowling. Professor Bittinger has also had the privilege of speaking at many mathematics conventions, most recently giving a lecture entitled "Baseball and Mathematics." In addition, he also has an interest in philosophy and theology, in particular, apologetics. Professor Bittinger currently lives in Carmel, Indiana with his wife, Elaine. He has two grown and married sons, Lowell and Chris, and four granddaughters.

Judy Beecher has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Indiana University and a graduate degree in mathematics from Purdue University. She has taught at both the high school and college levels with many years of developmental math and precalculus teaching experience at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis. In addition to her career in textbook publishing, she spends time traveling, enjoying her grandchildren, and promoting charity projects for a children's camp.

David Ellenbogen has taught math at the college level for twenty-two years, spending most of that time in the Massachusetts and Vermont community college systems, where he has served on both curriculum and developmental math committees. He has also taught at St. Michael's College and The University of Vermont. Professor Ellenbogen has been active in the Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges since 1985, having served on its Developmental Mathematics Committee and as a delegate, and has been a member of the Mathematical Association of America since 1979. He has authored dozens of publications on topics ranging from prealgebra to calculus and has delivered lectures at numerous conferences on the use of language in mathematics. Professor Ellenbogen received his BA in mathematics from Bates College and his MA in community college mathematics education from The University of Massachusetts at Amherst. A co-founder of the Colchester Vermont Recycling Program, Professor Ellenbogen has a deep love for the environment and the outdoors, especially in his home state of Vermont. In his spare time, he enjoys playing keyboard in the band Soularium, volunteering as a community mentor, hiking, biking, and skiing. He has two sons, Monroe and Zack.

Judy Penna received her undergraduate degree in mathematics from Kansas State University and her graduate degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois. Since then, she has taught at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis and at Butler University, and continues to focus on writing quality textbooks for undergraduate mathematics students. In her free time she likes to travel, read, knit, and spend time with her children.

Not the worst math book ever.....

.... but probably not the best, either.

I purchased this book for an online college algebra course. The college book store only sold the book with MyMathLab included... for four times what I paid for a used copy in good condition on Amazon! (We did not use MyMathLab at all, by the way. Check with your teachers to see if this is really necessary, as some colleges get kickbacks from textbook publishers for only selling new books, proprietary versions of books, or books with unnecessary access codes.)

I'm terrible at math. Add to that the fact that my online course included no video lectures, little discussion, and almost no help from the teacher, and what it added up to is essentially an independent study course. The tests were online, but that's about it. The main resource for my class was this textbook...... and I got an A.

So, by reading through the book and working out the odd numbered problems, I DID learn quite a bit. (The book includes the answers to odd-numbered problems only... This is pretty typical of math books.) However, I had to look up additional examples and information on the Internet in order to understand many topics. I do think the book could be improved in the following ways:

1) The book combines steps in several places, making it difficult or confusing to figure out how the author got from one step to another. This is particularly true in the sections about finding the squares and matrices (chapters 3 and 6). I would like it much better if the book went through the problems step-by-step.

2) It uses unconventional approaches to solving problems. My husband is working on a doctorate in engineering. He's very good at math and has a lot of experience using algebra. He tried to explain to me how to do some problems when I had questions. His explanations weren't much help, though, because they were totally different from the book. When he looked at the book, he said he had never seen problems done the way they are done in this book. That isn't necessarily a bad thing - just because an approach is not often taught does not mean it is wrong; it just means that you may have to learn different ways to solve similar problems in other classes.

3) Formulas and equations are sometimes difficult to find. The text is somewhat dense and specific information is not always well-highlighted. While theorems are set aside in colored boxes, equations are not. It would be nice if there were an index of formulas, theorems, and equations. Also, later chapters in the book occasionally reference topics from previous chapters. It would be VERY helpful if the author would cite the chapter and section where the topic was previously discussed in the book and if the book would re-print all relevant formulas in the later sections of the book. Instead, if I needed to use a formula from chapter 3 to do a problem in chapter 7,for example, I had to scan through several pages of dense material in chapters 2, 3, and 4 to find the necessary formula.

Clear and easy to follow.

I read this book as a refresher of the high school algebra I'd forgotten (or slept through). This book flows well from one topic to the next. Unlike my high school textbooks, this book carefully covers everything you need to know before the practice questions - I never felt lost or hopelessly confused.

Got this for my College Algebra class this semester. It was required for my particular class, but each professor will want a different book.

If you rent this, IT DOES NOT COME WITH A MATHLAB CODE OR MANUAL. You must buy those separately!

Excellent Textbook

This thoroughly explains just about all of the concepts within the book, while remaining relatively concise and clearly written. There are a few particularly complex reaction mechanisms that aren't shown, but that is about my only complaint with the textbook. The solution manual is also quite thorough, but falls apart a bit on the aromatic ring chapters, mostly due to typographical errors. The worst of these was referring to "Hot concentrate" instead of "Hot concentrated acid". Still, with the book as solid as it is and the solution manual generally being strong, this warrants five stars.

Detailed, great example problems, great for all levels

I love this textbook. The author details everything and provides many examples for all concepts. The problems at the end of each chapter are also super helpful, also good because it comes with an answer manual that explains in depth the solutions for these problems. Great book for beginner and upper level orgo students.

Affordable Rental

This is the Literature for Composition: An Introduction to Literature (10th Edition). I used this book for my English Composition Class the second part. I looked around online for the cheapest alternative to rent a book for this class. I found the cheapest on Amazon. I saved about $20 more just by renting with amazon. For those complaining of the condition of the book I don't think it's fair this is a USED RENTAL it's not going to be brand new or spiffy as long as it gets the job done and does not impede you from passing class and is not like falling apart at the seams there should be no problem. The book came in fair condition. I keep in mind that this book has probably been used and flipped through by countless other students as well. In terms of content it's an English book the pieces of Literature that the authors chose were mostly either weird, or depressing and trust me I appreciate literature.

About the Author
James G. Cappuccino is a retired professor (in residence) of Microbiology from the Department of Biology at the State University of New York at Rockland Community College in Suffern, New York. In 1991, he was the recipient of the Chancellor's Award from the State University of New York for Excellence in Teaching. He received his M.S degree (1955) and Ph.D (1957) from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey. From 1957 to 1970 he was associated with the Sloan Kettering Institute for Cancer Research. He was the author and co-author of numerous papers in the area of cancer chemotherapy, and was a member of the faculty of the Sloan Kettering Division of the Graduate School of Medical Sciences at Cornell University in New York, where he taught microbiology. From 1970 to 1995 he taught microbiology, parasitology and clinical chemistry at SUNY Rockland. He is an emeritus member of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and an emeritus member of the American Society for Cancer Research (AACR). Although officially retired, he still teaches a microbiology course for nurses at SUNY Rockland. When not writing, he enjoys spending time with his wife Elaine and their family at their summer home at the New Jersey shore. He also enjoys theater, literature, traveling abroad, and the quiet hours in his wood working shop. Natalie Sherman received her B.S. in biology and her M.S. in microbiology from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Her professional career spanned 32 years at the State University of New York at Rockland Community College in Suffern, New York, as a professor of microbiology. In addition to microbiology, she taught genetics, anatomy and physiology, and human sexuality. To be moreakin to the needs of her students she received an AAS degree in Nursing in 1981. She passed away on October 29, 2001.

About the Author

Sallie Marston received her Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She has been a faculty member in the School of Geography and Development at the University of Arizona since 1986. Her teaching focuses on culture, politics, globalization, and methods. She has taught many innovative courses, including a cultural geography course based entirely on HBO’s The Wire. She is the recipient of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award. She is the author of over 70 journal articles, book chapters, and books and serves on the editorial board of several scientific journals. She is co-author of Pearson’s introductory human geography textbook, Places and Regions in Global Context.

Paul Knox received his Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Sheffield, England. After teaching in the United Kingdom for several years, he moved to the United States to take a position as professor of urban affairs and planning at Virginia Tech. His teaching centers on urban and regional development withan emphasis on comparative study. He has written several books on aspects of economic geography, social geography, and urbanization and he serves on the editorial board of several scientific journals. In 1996 he was appointed to the position of University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech, where he currently serves as Senior Fellow for International Advancement, and International Director of the Metropolitan Institute. He is co-author of Pearson’s introductory human geography textbook, Places and Regions in Global Context.

Diana Liv erman received her Ph.D. in Geography from UCLA, and also studied at the University of Toronto, Canada, and University College London, England. Born in Accra, Ghana, she holds a joint appointment between the University of Arizona (where she co-directs the Institute of the Environment) and Oxford University. She has taught geography at Oxford University, the University of Arizona, Penn State, and the University of Wisconsin. Her teaching focuses on global environmental issues, climate and development, and on Latin America. She has served on several national and international advisory committees dealing with environmental issues and climate change and has written recent journal articles and book chapters on such topics as natural disasters, climate change, and environmental policy.

Vincent J. Del Casino Jr. received his Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Kentucky in 2000. He is currently Professor of Geography and Development and Associate Dean, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Arizona. He is part of the Social and Cultural Geography and Dialogues in Human Geography editorial boards as well as the AAG Membership Committee. He was previously Professor of Geography at California State University, Long Beach. He has held a Visiting Research Fellow post at The Australian National University, and completed NSF supported research in Thailand. His current research reflects his ongoing interests in the areas of social and health geography, with a particular emphasis on HIV transmission, the care of people living with HIV and AIDS, and homelessness. He has published numerous articles and book chapters on his research, and he recently completed an upper division textbook on social geography: A Companion to Social Geography (Wiley-Blackwell). He has served as Chair of the Cultural and Political Ecology Specialty Group of the AAG. His teaching focuses on social geography, geographic thought, and geographic methodology. He also teaches a number of general education courses in geography, including world regional geography, which he first began teaching as a graduate student in 1995.

Paul Robbins received his Ph.D. in Geography from Clark University in 1996. He is currently Director of the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin- Madison. Prior to this, he taught at the University of Arizona from 2005-2012, where he was Professor and Director of the School of Geography and Development, Ohio State University, the University of Iowa, and Eastern Connecticut State University. He has served as Chair of the Cultural and Political Ecology Specialty Group of the AAG. His teaching and research focuses on the relationships between individuals (homeowners, hunters, professional foresters), environmental actors (lawns, elk, mesquite trees), and the institutions that connect them. He and his students seek to explain human environmental practices and knowledge, the influence the environment has on human behavior and organization, and the implications this holds for ecosystem health, local community, and social justice. Past projects have examined chemical use in the suburban United States, elk management in Montana, forest product collection in New England, and wolf conservation in India.

Teachers should look for a different book to teach their class about this subject.

I am renting this book and it came in very good condition. I do not like the way this book reads, but that is my professor's fault for picking it. I am taking this class online and have found that this book as well as the one for our regional geography class read the same. A little difficult because it is all factual and does not read as easy as some of my psychology books. The authors don't try to relate the info or make it personal, they just state it and it's hard to remember everything because nothing sticks out to you. If I had a choice, I would look for a different book for the students that is more clear and points out important info, because reading this book is like reading a dictionary and then being tested on definitions after every letter. The information is all in the book, but there is so much that it is impossible to memorize it all, so you have to be quick at recalling page numbers and using post-its or flipping through the glossary.

This book was boring and difficult to get through...

I bought the 4th edition and probably could have used that and still gotten an A in the class with very little online supplementation. Nevertheless, this book was boring and difficult to get through. When I took Geography in High School I did not know it included so much. High School seemed to divide these topics into bite-sized portions like World History and Politics/ American gov't. This text book blurs the lines of all those and then some:
Economics
Weather
History
Politics
Geography
Education
Religion
and much more...
These topics are covered in every chapter for each region and it was a little much for me to absorb... especially in the beginning.

About the Author
For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student's perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience, along with stories from the field-including those of former students, now in health careers-that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her texts and laboratory manuals are known. In her ongoing commitment to students and her realization of the challenges they face, Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women returning to college after a hiatus or who are attending college for the first time and would otherwise be unable to continue with their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. MariebScience Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and generously contributed to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory that bears her name. In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor. Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings "InterActive Physiology¨" CD-ROM series, and is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS). "Anatomy & Physiology," Second Edition is the latest expression of her commitment to student needs in their pursuit of the study of A&P.

Lori Smith is principal at Cheyenne Mountain Junior High in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She has served in public education for 15 years, 9 of which have been in school administration. She began her career as a high school biology and chemistry teacher in 1994 in Colorado. Her work and systematic implementation of RTI at Cheyenne Mountain has led to several state-level presentations, publications, and consultations on RTI implementation. Smith s commitment to action research on RTI at the secondary level was inspired by the support of Evelyn Johnson as Smith completes her doctoral degree in education leadership and administration.

Legit. interchangeable with Marieb's 10th Main edition

I was skeptical because my instructor said that the image of our required textbook (10th edition) needed to be the same as the one on the access card. I don't want a physical textbook so I opted for an ebook with access code. He gave us this ISBN. Well, this said 11th edition. I had to ask and he said that this 11th edition is interchangeable with the 10th. Apparently, 10th edition Main = 11th edition pig/cat (he said). He didn't answer directly when I gave him this amazon link but only prompted me to buy directly from the publisher. Well, between paying $74 (w/ shipping) on amazon and $130.00 from the publisher...I took my chances. Usually with access codes, once you open it, most sellers won't allow refunds.

Bottom line: once I entered this access code, I have access to the course and to "Human Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory Manual, 11e Cat, 10e Main, 11e Pig". The ebook is all one and the same. I uploaded an image of the one I received.

P.S. Currently, at $69.99 a pop, make sure yours is unopened and 100% new. Don't trust sellers who say it's open but access card is unused. Access code can only be used once. Don't take chances on those.
